I am so exited for this growing season I have so many beginning sprouts in my mini green house inside the house right now so exciting! but my goal by then end of this year is to set up the jean pain composting for my 20ft poly tunnel I set up at the end of last year I'm in zone 7a so I dont think ill will have to supplement to much more heat beside that. Your set up is super amazing for winter growing . Just keep growing! And God Bless!

When you get a chance you should check out Rob bob's aquaponics and hoocho. Rob does heaps of stuff on aquaponics and hoocho does heaps on hydroponics. Pretty interesting stuff.

Hello from the Netherlands! I will soon have a greenhouse that is 20 square feet. I have a question regarding the ratio of wood chips to the square footage of the greenhouse. How much wood chips are needed?

The size of your pile is going to tell you how many btu’s you’ll potentially create. The cubic feet of your greenhouse needing to be heated will be your next question to find your answer for. So let’s say you have 200 square feet at 8 feet tall with poor insulation because greenhouses are poor insulators unless they are of glass or double layers- you’d need at least 6600 btu an hour to heat the space with air to air tranfer. Each cubic yard of compost creates around 1660btu/hour four cubic yards per ton of chips leads to about 6640btu potential per hour created. And you’ve got to consider the length of burn time, doubling the size of your pile will allow for more heat and longer duration. Thanks for the great questions.

Do you see an advantage to having a long narrow tunnel as opposed to a short wide tunnel?

Well honestly, I’ve not had the pleasure of using a wider greenhouse but we’re applied and inline for a usda grant and we are looking at 20’ wide by 50’ -70’ long greenhouses now and plan on experimenting with it once we jump through all the hoops of securing it for free! Great question, I built this caterpillar tunnel with the idea that the lower I kept the heat the warmer the floor would stay. So far this greenhouse has grown through three polar vortexes!
