Cheap diy trolling motor for Hobie Kayaks! 

This is brilliant... Here's a guy that saw a need, figured out a way to fill his need, then showed others how to do it and ended up making it into a business. Great job!

Bro, sweet setup. You're not lazy lol..We're all just motorized now. I have my 2021' Hoodoo Impulse 120, fin drive. I started with the center deck pod Bixpy J2 motor setup. Now I run the Nk-180 off my stern. I'm 5ft 7 152lbs. Always been toned. But I love my motor. So I can teather my fin drive for the open deck. And at 5am I like to enjoy my coffee, while I motor a 1/2 hour from the ramp. And then use my fin drive or sometimes my bixpy to troll on a low speed. But I still like to pedal and paddle around. To be stealthy, or get some exercise. Stay safe bro. 🙏 😎 🎣

You can make it adjustable speed by adding a 110 volt dimmer switch like you use on the wall in your house. The ones that have the round knob work best not the sliding type. Put it on high speed and adjust the thrust by turning down the dimmer. Mount it in a box with a plate and waterproof it with silicone. Works great. works on power tools like buffers too. Maybe I'll RU-vid this someday. Cheers! BTW I always put a Parafoil kite in my yak to use as a sail just in case, It only pulls you downwind but you can adjust your heading about 30 degrees using your rudder or paddle.

Thanks for the idea...I bought a watersnake T18Salt and some bits and pieces and made the same thing. The locking pin on my Hobie is 12.7mm diameter and 6in in length and easy to make and fit. I used the polyethylene cutting board material which dose not agree well with most epoxy glue and shortened the watersnake shaft 12in so it sits lower to the deck. So much easier having reverse on a mirage drive Pro Angler kayak for casting light line and accommodating wind drift.

I love my PA but hated having to shell out all that dough but wouldn't consider using any other yak. Nice to find someone who has come up with so many ways to improve the set up without breaking the bank. Keep up the great work!

I have the same motor for my outback but side mounted.... the little thing is a beast and very low draw! I side mounted it so i have the option to pedal and use the motor at the same time. I dont like fumbling with shit in the water

Perfect for my inflatable boat. bow mounted. Very easy to convert to do so.

Great video. I jig the Detroit river for walleye. That current is a killer on the way back up river. I'll be buying this motor for my radar 135. Looks like it will fit through my scupper as well. Thanks for the great idea.

As an update: I decided to purchase a 2016 Hobie Pro Angler 14, with Livewell, H-Bar, Elite-5 Chrip, Rod Holders, Anchor Trolley, etc., etc. It will arrive in March (did not want to put it away for the Winter). I live in PA., so since it is not an ice boat, I would just be able to look at it.

Keep in mind 1 mph in your case would be a 25% increase. That is huge over the course of a weekend of fishing let along a month.

You should keep using that spot by the house. Lighting is great and perspective is deep.

I am considering the purchase of a 2015 Hobie Pro Angler 14 leftover. My local sporting good store has one they will sell me for a little over $2500. By the time I buy an H-Bar, the Fishfinder, anchor, etc., I can see having almost another $1000 into it. Saving some money and getting a trolling motor looks real good. If I buy the kayak, my second purchase will be your motor.

My trolling motor on my bass boat will run all day on one battery. I also have the option of running 2 batteries in series to make it 24v and then it's even more efficient. Either your battery is too small or those trolling motors aren't efficient if it lasts you 6 hours. Do you think you can make that motor shorter if you take it apart and shorten the shaft?

The watersnake pivots up as soon as it hits an underwater obstacle, if mounted using the traditional method, as intended. The watersnake will pivot up. Thus preventing damage to the outboard. With your method of mounting the outboard and in shallow water, lose concentration for no more then a few seconds. You could well damage your watersnake

What size battery (ies) are you using to power this? How long do they last? Do you know how many amps it draws at each speed? I am definitely doing this just want to get the right size battery.

May I ask what epoxy you use to glue the cutting board material to the kayak plug? I used a cutting board also and various epoxies but none have held so far. Thanks

Hi Tony, I have a Revolution 11 which I would like to add the small Watersnake motor (which is easily available here in Australia).. did you use the same engine when you made your modified model? do you have any tips for an Aussie doing a DIY (as you aren't selling internationally any longer)... thank you.

Have you tested the time it takes the battery to run out in both high and low settings? I rigged my 30lb thrust on the stern of my Ocean Kayak trident 13. I get about 5 hrs. Out of it in the ocean. Might be able to squeeze another 30 min. out of it inshore. Check it out! Looking to upgrade to a hobie outback and try your method. Great job!

So I bought one these from you. Can you explain why the cassette plug is not lined up straight? There is no way to straighten it out either. The way it sits in the boat, the prop is to the left. This is straight out of the box. I'm puzzled why it's not straight.

so what type of batteries would this use. I mean as in SLA not lithium. But like 18AH or 21AH........? I heard that putting a motor on a kayak makes it a boat and needs to be registered. Is this wrong? I've never been kayaking but my wife and I are outgoing and want to try fun things to save money. Sure they can be expensive but living in southern California we have the ocean, rivers and lakes.

Does your motor stop the props straight up& down when turned off ? If not how can it be easily removed before running it into the ground. I see plenty of vids showing how easy it is to install but never how difficult it is to remove when the blades are not vertical, what is your method of remedy, thanks!!!!

you said you got the plug from Austin kayak. so are you in Texas? in Texas if you add a trolling motor to any boat you must register it.
