Cheap Easel Tray (Work for Painting in the Car Too!)

I bought a steering wheel tray for painting in my car for under $10: amzn.to/3ENaJqE it's meant for working or eating, one side is for food and a cup and the other is for a laptop or notebook, it even has a pencil rest. It will friction fir on your steering wheel as is but I wondered if it could be attached to an easel. It can, all you need is a pool noodle from the dollar store!
I got to thinking, if you need it to be more sturdy you could use large A shape spring clip clamps like this: amzn.to/39l0Ogj under the tray (attach them over the noodle and legs right under the bottom of the tray for more support.

You have no idea how grateful I am you posted this little video! I am a bi-lateral leg amputee so I spend a lot of time in a wheelchair and I can't usually paint and hold everything as anything I leave on my lap will just fall off lol this solves my problem! Thank you! 😁

Brush holder suggestion. Cut the pool noodles a bit longer. Cut slits part way through on section opposite the long slit and situated above the tray. Most brushes/pens/etc will fit in the slits. Or cut another piece of noodle to sit on side of tray. And slit the same way.

You could poke holes in the exposed part and put brush handles in too, but brushes wouldn't be facing downward

I did a nocturnal painting on my patio to test run my stuff. I love painting in the dark when it's cold and quiet. I live in a place with 30 ish Temps and it's perfect

I am not painting outside much these days but this is a wonderful frugal fix! Good to use if I am painting from the car as well and to do so without pool noodles! Glad your doing well and i hope the rest of your family is recovering too.

Excellent! I have seen easels with trays and was a bit in a wanting mood looking at them... this is much better since I have 2 easels already! I saw that some of the trays had clips to adjust to leather steering wheel covers and they might... or might not ;) be a bit more snug. Thanks!

I bought one of those trays a couple of years ago and it didn't fit on my steering wheel. I then came up with the idea of seeing if it could be used as a tray on my easel which didn't work either. I never thought about using the pool noodles to help secure the tray on the easel! Now I have a pochade box so I don't have a need for the other easel.

Hi Lindsey. It was hard for me to see clearly in the video, but I think those parts on the legs you were wondering about are used to hold large (24 x 32”) paper flip charts.

Great idea maybe you can use the rest of the noodle to help stablize the tray horizontally id think youd have to maybe get a dowel and slide it inside noodle horizontally than use other pices of dowel in side noodle and have dowel stick into each noodle on legs of easel and each side horizontally... so in essance it would look like a square u the wooden dowels could possibly be pushed into the noodle on legs if you cut them a bit longer then rest inside the noodle......[U] maybe this would give more stability its werid how i always think outside of box to jerry rigg things..i think its cause ive never had much money for crafting and had to upcycle what i have around my house lol...mikelle art mom....💙💛🌏🌍🌎🌎🇺🇦🛐🌻✝️✌🕊🙏.

Thanks for trying the tray on your easel/tripod and coming up with a cheap and easy way to make it work.!! I probably would not have thought of that solution on my own. =) The camera tripod I have doesn't have anything on the legs, so the clamps are also a great idea/tip. Thanks again !!
