Cheap Ebay compression tester vs Laser compression tester * DONT BUY THE WRONG ONE*

Hi everyone, hope you keeping well and safe. So after my last video where I compression tested the GOLF I thought I had to make this video because I stumbled upon an issue with these cheap compression testers.
In this video I tested both a car engine and a chainsaw 2 stroke engine and the results are very surprising especially on the chainsaw where one of the cheap testers didn't do too bad on the car but did really bad on the saw.
Thanks for watching and keep safe.

This is definitely a thing. I bought a cheap diesel compression tester and it read well below minimum specs. I pulled the head, tested for cracks, checked rings, pistons, cylinder, walls, replaced the gasket, did a valve job only to find exact same compression. Admittedly I wanted to do this anyway as the motor was very high milage, only cost was parts as I did it myself but it was a good lesson learned. Do not buy cheap car diagnostic equipment from ebay.
@Mk4heavenHD
@Mk4heavenHD 9 месяцев назад
Thats exactly why I made this video because you can end up doing a whole overhaul for nothing, at least in your case you wanted to refresh the engine and now have a good motor.

The Scrader valve for compression gauges has a VERY light pressure spring. The one in mine was red. A pack from the local auto store, same color, had a very hard spring and did not read at all, just like your first example. So, you must buy a Schrader valve for compression gauges.

Just a tip guys. Buying a name brand means that the product has been tested for quality standards and consistency. That's why you pay a premium. Moreover a reputable retailer/wholesaler has a procurement division sourcing all their supplies to make sure they are not sell substandard products. Whenever buying anything do your research well otherwise it can to expensive failure especially electrical car parts. BTW Mk4Heaven tried changing my fuel filter last week. I failed. That clip didn't want to give way and I was scared to damage the fuel line. I'll give it a final this weekend. Greetings from Auckland

Friend borrowed me some cheap one (looks same as red one in video) and it seems its not calibrated with long rubber house. When i tried with steel house with rubber on the end so it seals ive got 15 bar, with rubber house just 8. Engine should have around 13-15 bars and its newly build, so i guess it dosent lie.

The good ones have a schrader valve in the adapter hose (where the thread is located, at the bottom of the hose). It's not so much the gauge itself .... e.g. BGS or Gunson have good and not expensive compression testers with these valves in the hose ends (you can just see the valves protruding from the brass adapters). Thanks for the video! Frank

Nice video, i myself bought the same red tester off ebay many years ago for outboard motor testing, it was utter rubbish!, showing 35psi then i bought the same laser model in this video, the same cylinder read 125psi, quite a difference and because of the reading i have no need to strip the engine down now to check the cylinder walls etc. My red pressure testing kit was £9 i believe and the laser tester was £33.75 quite expensive compared to other places that sell it for a little as £20 but i needed it so paid the higher price. My advice is pay once and cry once.... In other words buy quality 1st time!

Hi I got a question if my turbo is gone dose it effects the engine compression my turbo ko4 is smoking got play in and out and side to side a split in one of the air hose under the manifold my engine done 99miles it’s a bam 225 my readings are cyl 1 154 cyl2 156 cyl3 156 cyl 4 156 can all above my my engine compression bad
@Mk4heavenHD
@Mk4heavenHD Год назад
Hi mate Bam engine is similar to AUM and they say good compression should be up top near 200psi. This is with warm engine test like I did on my car. As far as I’m aware turbo doesn’t affect compression test as it only creates boost when the engine is actually running. On 1.8T they consider anything under 140 to be worn and bad so you may still be borderline okay.

The cheap one looks exactly like the Silverline 598559 a friend loaned me (although he's never used it), i wonder if Silverline just repackaged some cheap rubbish... Its giving me worryingly low readings and makes a popping sound after a couple of cranks, i noticed the gauge slowly loosing pressure, and also noticed it not sealing properly causing compression blow-by back out the plug hole as I'm cranking! @jackle842000
@jackle842000 2 года назад
@@Mk4heavenHD Yeah, for sure. I don't really feel like snap on is what they once were myself. Feel like they rebrand much cheaper stuff and sell it for two or three times myself but I'm not sure how to verify that. I do think they test and verify accuracy before applying their brand though. Haven't ever heard much complaints on that. I'm not against the cheap stuff at all. I was actually just wandering if anyone knows a good way to verify accuracy of one at home to be sure that, even if you have a good brand, it's not miscalibrated or no longer calibrated to ensure perfect testing. No matter the brand it can be subject to losing calibration I'm sure. Torque wrenches of all brands sure can lose calibration anyway. Was just a thought, wasn't trying to argue against your recommended brand or anything. Matter of fact I appreciate the recommendation as something I'm considering myself now as I'm unfamiliar with compression gauges and don't use one enough to get a snap on. Although something of that importance I want accuracy and will pay for it if I have no other way. I don't see why a super high quality one even should cost more than $80 to $100 U.S. new myself though but they appear to for many brands.

Question: Difference is difference, but... How do You actually know that the meter which showed highest readings is "correct"? Maybe it is showing too much - so that the users would be happy in seeing these high numbers :) I believe we do not know which cheap meter is actual and most correct, until it's measured and compared against Professional meter that is sold for 400-1000GBP. But then again, how could we know that the expensive one will show correct reading...😜 In any case - thank You for this video. :)
