It's like starting to play golf. You don't usually go out and buy a full set of Pings or Calloways if you don't even know if you are going to enjoy it. Get a cheap that plays well enough, then upgrade as you go along and improve/dedicate to the sound/style that you want...

I would say that if the pink sax was taken to a good luthier, new decent pads and corks, key adjustments, it would sound even better! I was impressed!
@SkylersRants
@SkylersRants 4 года назад
". . . Keys are lighter, all those professional differences . . . " To me, that's the most important difference. A good saxophonist can make a bad sax sound better, and a beginner will struggle regardless until his skill improves. To me, the most important part is how it feels on your fingers, and I rarely hear reviews talk about this.

yes! I had a cheap Chinese sax, and it was very uncomfortable to play! They could even hurt my fingers!
@DynamixWarePro
@DynamixWarePro 3 года назад
@@SuperSamu14 I agree. I once had 2 cheap Chinese alto saxes and the keywork felt chunky and a little heavy and not very comfortable on both. The first was a Chinese copy of a Yanagisawa elite with the underslung neck which was decent and actually played OK minus the chunky keywork and the odd metallic smell it had which I have never noticed on any Yamaha or Yangagisawa I have played. The second sax was worse than the other as the palm keys on one opened way too far and it had sharp edges here and there and the high notes didn't come out at all.

It would be interesting to compare a Mark VI copy from AliExpress (currently €325) vs an actual Mark VI. If it was 90% as good but for 10% of the price, that would make it a great buying proposition.

Hi. I was think about a chinese sax, however after watching many tube videos I shied away from that. I bought a Taiwanese Jupiter STS 787 tenor built in 1989. It has been well cared for over time and has a fairly good tone (although I can't do it justice yet). It is fitted with a Yamaha mouthpiece and I'm using a Legere 2.5 synthetic reed. So far I can play around 2 octaves and blow a good bottom Bb. Being long in the tooth my learning curve is a little flat (pun intended). Thanks for all your free content.

Thanks so much for this quality video mate. I am looking to learn my first instrument. I turned my back with the headphones on loud on my first watch as soon as I saw you had no audio prompts for each instrument change. I am sorry but I couldn't tell the difference at all. I thought I could for a moment but after rewinding and trying to pick m which one with only my partner watching... I only got it right 3 in 10 times. Flukes essentially. The mouthpiece I couldn't really get a feel for differences.. So again the same. Ebay branding changes like that no matter the product. Thanks for the advice mate. Appreciate it alot.

I think your advice to buy a second-hand Yamaha horn is great - Yamaha quality is legendary. I have an electric organ from Yamaha that I had played since I was seven or eight, and thirty somewhat years after, it sounds exactly as good as it did when I was a child. I currently play a Julius Keilwerth ST90 tenor. This Taiwan-made student grade horn is good for its purpose, but I do wish I had bought a Yamaha instead, as I hear that it plays more consistently. The trouble with purchasing a used horn as a beginner is that you don't know what to look for. My horn had to be serviced less than a year in because one of the pads was damaged, the service and repair charges, together with the purchase price, would have allowed me to buy a decent Yamaha horn... but as beginners, you wouldn't know how to look for pitfalls like those.

In all honesty, for the price, it sounds pretty good. I know the quality and intonation on the Chinese horn isn't anywhere close to the Selmer, but that aside, it doesn't seem too bad, say for a backup horn or something to travel with.

The only reason I'm learning sax is because someone in the neighbourhood was moving overseas and had a Freedom alto they were going to dump. I suspect it has leaks, but it's still entertaining to me. An upgrade to a Yamaha would be my preference due to budget (and the fact that I'm approaching retirement age).

Intonation of the sa80 is undeniable but the scrap metal horn will def get a student by especially for the price. Also it wouldn’t be a bad idea to have a cheap horn for outdoors gigs or where you could use an ‘expendable’ horn

Not sure if a second hand one is completely the answer. I guess if you get a good one. You have to watch out that you're not buying one that's been played pretty hard and needs work. Get a Mendini/Lararro/Jean Paul and an extended warranty. If it doesn't play when you get it, send it back and try another one. For beginners who might not stick with it, I'd go with a Cheap Chinese sax on Amazon vs. a used one.

Having bought a Chinese horn about 15 years ago, I have to say, I'm incredibly impressed by what they're putting out now. Compared to the POS I had now, these new horns are freaking Mark VIs. It's great that kids that don't have much money at all can at least get started for so cheap, even if it will only last a couple years.

So true Dan, and I’m sure they’re only going to get better... There’s also some totally legit Chinese / Taiwanese brands like P. Mauriat that have gained popularity for making genuinely great saxophones for a fraction of the price of the competition. Hopefully the trend continues!

I purchased a Lade alto saxophone a few weeks ago and found it to be a surprisingly well built instrument with great key placement and came with good seal on the pads. It plays in tune and I could play it on gigs no problem. The thing with all horns is experience and mouthpiece and really playing with the horn for a long time. I listened to the RU-vid comparison and found the Selmer to sound a little better but not by much because the player was experienced and a good player. Time will tell weaather it lasts or not but I'm going to play it for a while to see if it holds up and my sound stays the same as my Cannonball. Hope this helps

I was able to lawaway my first sax (A used Vito made in Japan, same factory as the yahama yas 23) with a local and reputable music store for $1100, I also bought my second sax recently, Its a cheap and used china sax I bought for $70 on ebay and is green, i only had trouble with the octive key as it was bent, but overall it plays great! But if it ever breaks I will always have my Vito.
@gordwrath6811
@gordwrath6811 4 года назад
So I actually bought a green Chinese sax and 1 it came in an unplayable status (octave key bent, octave lever bent), 2 it took me a month to get the keys working (bent rods, plastic in the pinion screws) and 3 in that same amount of time I had to use a leak light to seal all of the pads and reform them. Along side of that the design overall is clunky, the key pearls are in awkward spots, had to shave the neck cork down, replace cork pads, paint is chipping off due to no exterior lacquer. Oh and it is out of tune by half a note on all lower notes. Every time I pick up and play my Vito (built in same factory as the Yamaha YAS-23) after playing the green one I sigh in relief of a good quality instrument. Sure it is a good buy for the price, but you have to fix it if it is out of sorts. No reasonable Saxophone technician will work on a cheap Chinese sax, you pay more for the service and there is no guarantee it will not go out of sorts quickly again. I suggest going to a music store and testing the cheapest sax they have, the mid range, and the higher end sax. The lowest rung sax will be 100x better than a cheapo chinese sax. Best regards, Gordo.

I used to be very good on alto sax about 35 years ago and then switched to guitar and have continued to play that every since. I've recently been missing the sax and want to start playing again. I had a Yamaha student model in high school and used a Berg Larsen mouthpiece and it never really got the growl sound I wanted. I want a professional sax now but don't have much money. What model used professional alto would you recommend? I'm looking for a David Sanborn or Mindi Abair type sound... Also... I'm already considering a Dukoff D7 or D8 mouthpiece unless you have more affordable suggestions. Thanks in advance and thank you for this channel!
@SaxTuition
@SaxTuition 4 года назад
Hey Matt! Thanks for the question. Without knowing your budget, I'd say if you're just dipping your toes in the water and you want a bright sounding saxophone, go with a second hand Yamaha - YAS-23 or AS-100. They're very well constructed and already play on the bright side. I know they're not professional horns but you can find them for less than $1000 (often $300-500) and in my opinion will outplay anything else in that category. Professionals often use them as their backup horns if their main axe is in the shop. Dave Sanborn plays a Selmer Mark VI, but unfortunately you'll be looking at at least $4000 for one of those beauties. The modern Selmer Paris horns are generally more classically focussed (apart from the Reference models), so my picks would be either a second hand Yamaha Custom Z or Yanagisawa (991 or 901). Expect to pay around $3000 though... As far as bright mouthpieces go, here are some other ideas for you: - Theo Wanne (check his full line, and the Mindy Abair signature model) - Jody Jazz JET - Claude Lakey (more affordable, brighter sounding mouthpiece) Let me know how you go. All the best!
