I posted a new video using a different electric spray gun with matte black on the Rat Rod PT cruiser i am building feel free to browse my videos for more on that! Hope y’all enjoy the videos!
For being the 1st time it’s not bad , I’d never painted a whole car but I thought painting the roof 1st was smart because I’m clumsy I know if it’s me and I painted the sides I’d probably screw up the sides trying to paint the top, nonetheless not bad
He did a decent job, painting cars ain’t hard! NOTE: You should wash the car to remove any wax and loose dirt BEFORE you begin to sand the paint down. This will help prevent deep scratches, and it will help to stop your sandpaper from clogging up too quickly. 1. Sand car until there’s absolutely no sheen or shine showing. 2. Use primer to cover any bare metal surfaces. 3. If you’re using body filler to fill in dents and dings, make sure you sand down to bare metal BEFORE you apply the body filler. Also, hit the spot with some wax and grease remover before you apply the filler. Then, apply the filler, let it dry, then sand the filler down until it’s smooth and primer over it. 4. Lightly sand the primer down to reduce any texturizing left behind from spraying the primer. If you sand through the primer, just re-primer that spot and lightly sand again. 5. Mask off any areas where you don’t want paint. 6. Use wax and grease remover on the ENTIRE car, or the surface areas you intend to paint. After this, DO NOT touch the car with your bare hands. Your skin stays covered in oil and sodium deposits, it will ruin your paint job. If you end up touching the car, just use some more wax and grease remover on that spot. 7. Use a tack cloth to remove any leftover dust and debris. 8. Mix the paint in the bucket by itself thoroughly BEFORE you mix in the reducer, hardener, pearls, flakes, or any other additives. Then, of course, mix in the proper amount of additives. 9. Use a strainer when pouring the mixed paint into your paint gun. 10. Use a test surface to ensure your gun is spraying evenly and consistently. 11. Wet ground if necessary, which reduces flying dust particles. If you accidentally wet the car, grab your wax and grease remover and thoroughly dry that area before you begin to paint. 12. Start spraying your paint! Keep the gun at least six inches away from the car, and move at a steady pace. Move too fast, and your paint won’t be even, and you’ll have to do more coats. Move too slow, and your paint will run, and you’ll have to sand that area down and start over. You’ll learn the right speed as you proceed with your paint job. NEVER try to cover the surface with just one coat! Do light, even coats until all the paint is uniform. 13. If you’re doing a base coat/clear coat job, apply at least two coats of base coat and let it dry BEFORE you apply the clear coat. Once the base coat dries, tack the car down with a tack rag, while wearing gloves so you don’t transfer any oil from your skin, then start to lay down your clear using the same technique you used to lay down the base. If you’re using the same gun for the base and the clear, make sure you clean the gun thoroughly. Also, make sure to use a strainer when pouring the clear into the gun. With clear coat, it’s best to not let the clear dry completely before you lay down the next coat. Let the clear coat flash dry, until it’s just tacky, then lay as many coats as you want. Three coats of high quality clear will usually have your paint looking wet, even when it’s dry. 14. Let the paint flash dry a little longer this time, then pull off your masking BEFORE the paint dries completely. This will help assure the paint doesn’t peel off with the tape. Don’t let anyone touch the paint, and DON’T let the car get wet for at LEAST 24 hours after the paint job is finished. 15. Enjoy your freshly painted car!
For everybody that is talking sheet, remember this is a paint job for $80. This is for people who only have $80 to put towards a paint job. From that perspective, this looks great.
Some commentators tend to forget these videos are for those who want to try DIY. I enjoy doing all my own work. I’ve always wanted to paint my own car and take pride in my work. Why would I spend $4000 to paint a $2500 car?
Y so much hate on my man .... Jeez i dont see no where him saying hes a professional painter .... This dude spent 75 bucks on painting a car .... All these dude popping up trying to clown him that are painters it cost 4 grand for a color change at a shop let this man do what he want its his car
Besides if you are a professional what are you doing watching a novice/hobbiest paint his car. Life is too short to not experiment, just do it man. Trial and error it’s my motto, cheers!!!!
As a person with experience painting I would do the roof before you do the entire side so you can get in close and over spray falls down more than up. Also move the gun a bit faster and a tiny bit more away from the surface and you won't get runs.
To all the guys saying it looks like crap you must have piles of cash laying around. You don't invest in a beater car period. This thing looks decent with new paint and nobody is looking at a 20 year old car expecting it to be perfect anyway. It looks good from 20 feet away and that's all that matters to this guy. If you wanna spend 2-4 thousand to repaint a 1000$ car go for it.
That's very true my friend, for someone to spend thousands of dollars on an older car is a bad investment cause it wont make it worth anymore, all it would do as far as value is move it from fair condition to good condition, but yes the fact that you did it yourself makes it all self rewarding,, I own a 95 Corolla that I wish I can paint, but when I start cleaning windows and rugs, boy does it look good for an old car, keep up the good work kid 👍
I'm not a big Honda guy, but there are quite a few things that brought me and kept me interested in this video... 1. Youre upload is RECENT. Viewing videos on things and seeing it being 7 years ago doesn't help. 2. You used an ELECTRIC spray gun. I've owned the same exact one. I used it to DIP my first car panels and it came out alright. I have a brand new one sitting in my new car ready to go. I was deciding between this one and the new Avanti one that they just produced. The settings, dials and tips look a lot better quality. Still undecided. 3. You painted a car 4. You used a color close to the color I'd like to go with, so that was refreshing / satisfying. 5. You were somewhat very detailed in the job. I haven't viewed your other videos...which I'm going to do. 6. It came out pretty well. There are techniques that I'd use next time such as spraying the top first..etc etc... I'm also impressed how well it turned out WITH THE GUN in such adverse conditions. 7. I've subscribed.... sub back!!!
It's a budget paint job that looks very nice a lot of people gets cars that may need a little body work and paint but you can actually take a $300 car and make it into a $1000 car easily , good job it's very encouraging
Everybody doesn't want a $3000 paint job, especially on a cheaper vehicle.I got quoted $2800 to paint a 1985 Dodge truck, only worth maybe $3 grand. Will be primerring it myself, and possibly paint(flat or satin black Rustoleum ).I think the car looks fine, especially for the money spent.
Why the hate? Did yall see the car before he repainted it? It looks way better. Personally I wouldn't paint my daily like this, but I got an old work truck this would be perfect for.
It looks good for what it is bro, Nice job. Next time you paint don't just go with 1 coat though. Put a light coat on first. Like a fog coat/mist. Don't try to cover it all on the first coat. Light coat then a medium coat and 1 heavy coat to finish it. That way you want have any runs. Or not as many that is. And it helps keep the Orange peel down. Now I'm not knocking your paint job bro so please don't take it that way. Because for what it is, it does look good. Keep it up
After seeing your video I think I'll paint my old 89 Nissan Hard Body its gray right now ,can't wait for it to look as good as your ride .Thanks for the video, Son. God Bless
That looks damn good young man. Don’t forget to paint the “ hood jams “ when you paint the door jams. I saw that turqouise color in there. Something else to remember. I once had an old pickup back in the late 70’s when I was in High School that I painted with tractor paint. Whenever I would pass a cornfield or an alfalfa field I would hafta struggle with the steering wheel to keep the truck on the road. It kept wanting to get off the road and go out in the field and work. That taught me to never paint another vehicle with International red. Be careful! 👨🌾
Don't care for the negative comments I do like a Hands-On techniques you used on the budget paint job looks really great I've done some of those myself and the results are miraculous God bless keep up the good work I love watching your videos for tips and ideas on my own projects
For those talking sheet. Why would you put a $4,000 paint job on a $2,000 car? This is a great way to make your car look a lot better on a small budget.
Looks good from 10 feet away. Pretty good for your first time. But 2 thin coats are way better than one ticket coat and you won't have any runs. I do like the brown tint to the paint. Now let's see it wet sanded and buffed out.
Everyday Cars i*My first time painting out of the electric gun* not my first paint job ever but yea it didn’t turn out very bad it did need wet sanded but I’m wet sanding with 400 and adding another layer with the HVLP then adding pearl clear over it.
I think it came out pretty decent, maybe next time cut back on the fluid if that sprayer has an adjustment for it, the orange peel is just from it going on too heavy, but hey, it's a learning curve with a new prayer no matter what the brand or style
Looks great brother, killer work... Pro tip spray the roof and hood and trunk first , it's less of a risk of rubbing it to fresh paint. No disrespect ... Just noticed that
Man I’ve watched a lot of DIY auto paint work and this is the best one yet! I appreciate that you did it outside and overall make it look very doable for the average guy .. I have ‘99 RAV4 will try this method out eventually
Not having friends or distractions is a good thing i never would have the confidence in myself to work on and paint cars and bikes! Been watching this every day for a week making a list waiting for payday and REWATCHING FOR TECHNIQUE used to paint houses and covered patios and it made me hate it but maybe this project will bring to light to something im good at! :) Thanks for the confidence boost! 95 saturn wagon slammed and cut into a ute looking truck
Not sure what is more impressive, how great this turned out for only 10 hours of work and so cheap, or the amount of improper prep and spray techniques able to be fit in one video.
I used the same gun on a cabinet job. Came out awesome. It is a crappy cheap gun that can be difficult at times. Over spray everywhere. Make sure you refill when you are down to 1/3 of the cup or it will spit all over your work. Make sure you lube it or it will stick and make a bzzzzzzzzzz sound. On sale it goes for $15 regular price is $25. If you can get yourself a better user friendly gun. For the price its great.
Also, a way to get less peel affect out of the rattle can, you dust it on 2 coats then 2 medium to light coats, it's counter productive to try to cover the entire surface with a good cost the first coat. Just a suggestion. If this was me, I'd be like hey it shines and looks good until you get super close, I'd prolly put sanding off a few days 😂
An absolutely excellent job of documenting an at home, budget friendly, paint job on an entire vehicle. Thank you for your efforts, great job and the outcome looks great for what it is 👍🏽
A little advice for next time, increase the fan size of your spray, keep the gun at least a foot away from the surface and walk the length of the car, not spray section by section.
You are a brave man 😎 im thinking about flipping a few cars in my spare time, i will buy one with a terrible paintjob to start out with and use it to lower the price! I love painting, mostly because you get a feel for the car, and the results comes out instantly ❤ so a few mechanical issues and a shitty paint will be the first project! I painted alot of stuff with rattlecans, mostly scooters and inside car trim so om not new to this ! Thanks for the video i enjoyed every minute! 😁
To get running paint off , just get duck tape and wrap it around your 4 fingers . Sticky side facing out and just dab the running paint and reapply paint if needed
Hey man. Just wanted to give you a quick shout. I know the video isn't pro quality- BUT- for all us average joe blue collar want a better way to do it guys. Spot on. I just put a first coat on my old truck using this same rig, paint and the process you showed. Got some sanding to do, but thanks for the information man.
I finished the paint on the car in one day i just ran out of light to record.. It could be achieved in 6-8 hours if you prep and paint all in the same day. It helps having a shop and not recording the whole process.
I'm not an auto body guy by any means, but I'm pretty sure it makes better sense 1) to spray in a paint booth and 2) to spray from the top of the car on down and then the sides?
WARDEN 46 I didn’t have a paint booth and that’s what happens when I rush I make mistakes I mean I am a human. Best to start up top work your way down and not paint on a hill with the wind but this is what I have so i work with what I have. My newer videos show how it looks now since I fixed the orange peel and added clear with the HVLP spray gun.
WARDEN 46 actually starting at the bottom of one side and then moving up the the center of the roof, and then pulling the paint across the roof and down the other side yields good results. This avoids stripes on the roof, trunk and hood because the paint stays wet at those joining points and becomes one cover drying at the same time.
@@thedriverscorner oh ok. I was just say that because I thought if you did the side first, you might accidentally lean on the car when going to paint the roof and mess up fresh paint.
Good Job for your first paint job, I did a Corolla a few years back and I had way worst orange peel than you did. You will get better next time you do it. Thanks for sharing
Should get a electric sprayer with a nozzle that will let you spray vertical or horizontal. Will be less orange peel and runs. I have one i got for like 60 bucks at home depot
Thanks for the video. Over got a sprayer like the one you used and was thinking of painting my truck using it. Was going to do rattle cans but the gun is a lot faster. Thanks again.
I am a automotive paint prep tech at a shop and if you wanna get the best results fast you should invest in a d/a or dual action sander they are great but most of them are pneumatic
Any sanded parts will have bleed through from the sanded substrate, causing an uneven gloss. unless your paint is super high solids and your coat is super thick hence the orange peel and the runs. the electric house painter doesn't help with that either you cant adjust the atomization of the paint and multiple thinner coats are impossible with it, like you can do with a hvlp sprayer. and multiple coats with a thinner paint will look much more professional. and painting a car in your driveway is definitely going to give you headaches! also stopping short on your strokes to change direction and getting arm fatigue causes you to get too close to the car it's also what causes runs. always keep going in the same horizontal direction let the masking get covered who cares lol. people always try to trace around the masking less runs equals less work for you but with all that said you did a good job. but believe me, when you paint your car in your driveway with an electric gun you are going to be disappointed and doing a lot of extra work fixing fo's, runs, orange peel, tiger striping ect.
The naysayers are annoying... You can get great results with anything if you're on a budget. It's all about prep and finishing work like wet sanding. You don't need to spend big money on an air compressor and gun.
@@earlybird5989 There's a video on RU-vid where a guy got the cheapest maco paint job they offered and then he wet sanded and buffed it to look like a factory paint job. It's just all in the amount of extra work you wanna put into painting. If you don't like putting some elbow grease and hard work into a paint job then spend a grand on a good setup. If you don't mind then spend up to 300 and get er done. Ive got good results with a wagner painter on a car like the guy in the video. Now My little 150 dollar pancake compressor and 25 dollar spray gun at harbor freight has done great. Painted my pickup with it. I've even used it to paint trim and cabinets in my home. Planning on weatherizing my fence this year with it.
@@darkknight097 5-6 gallons. Pair it with a low cfm hvlp gun and it can be done. Once you dial it in and get your speed down with practice you can get great results
I’m really surprised that nobody has came up with a electric spray gun that is actually meant for vehicle painting. Seems like if the spray jets on the gun was smaller more like a gravity fed air gun you’d pretty much have ended up with very little orange peal. Tractor paint works good with foam rollers too I did a bass boat in Ford blue and it looks awesome plus the paint sticks and won’t peal off.
I'm planning on getting a 96 civic ex coupe that I found and the front bumper, fenders and hood have been painted flat black. The car was originally red so I'm thinking about using this to paint the parts that aren't red anymore.
Look, big money equipment is going to save you time and material waste. I would do a spray test on a cardboard and thin it so the gun will make an even spray. Once thats set, you spray, see how it flashes, put your layers on and sand. The new stuff is very forgiving. Just because it's more work, it doesn't have to be worse work.
consciouscool Yea I know I have painted for awhile with amazing results using HVLP and compressor and single stage, tractor paint, primer base clear, spray can and so on. I just did this to do something different lol. I have since wet sanded and added pearl 2k clear with the HVLP and it came out pretty amazing. It was a experiment
@@JamesDguy Guys like you are the only reason RU-vid is so great. We get so target fixated on one way but bold guys that just do it remind us there is more then one way to skin a cat. Thanks for sharing your experience with us adding to the collective knowledge
my OCD is killing me use the mix ratio on the cup 1 to one 2 to one 3 to 1 etc., use the drill mixing deal on the can of paint then when you add clear hardener other use a good clean stick slowly blend together the sprayer is made for heavy house paints Ill give you A for effort if you're going to do any amount of car painting get a cheap compressor a couple horrible freight guns a couple water filters on the gun practice a little I've made the enamels like tractor paint look like glass if I was close I'd love to teach you spray tips not judging just giving a little advise my friend wanted his car painted he bought a cheap car port canvas thing we put plastic tarps on the sides a couple air filters in the front and a fan or 2 in the back came out great for outside job we drank plenty of his beers we used Nason single stage acrylic enamel it's not real expensive but can be buffed, worked with nice selection of colors ,metallics I've always drove cars from the junkyards not worth painting never wanted a nice shiny one for me I only got to make other people's stuff look nice good luck bud keep on doing it anything looks better going down the road than my multi colored hooptie I do clean the wheels though
