In the 1970's I was looking around for an upgrade from Ye Olde Leica IIIa. I looked at Leica M-series cameras and quickly concluded that those were "Unobtainium" for the ordinary college student. These were in the days when Shutterbug Ads, a nationwide photographic want ad publication was that era's eBay. I got a complete Canon P outfit, from brown case to clip-on Selenium cell light meter and 50mm f/1.8 Canon lens for about $200. I could use all of my Leica Screw Mount lenses, and I had enough money left for a 105mm f/2.5 Nikkor and a 28mm f/2.8 Canon lenses. Not bad for a discount not-"Leica M3," eh?

I have a 6L and that lenses from that time alight the same way as you show (the Nikkor 50 f2 H.C as well as Canon 50 f1.8) on the other hand, the voigtlander alight normally (the "middle" is centered). These prices for this ("cheap" consumer) film are crazy?!! A roll of Portra 800 is more than 20 € here in Germany now!! When bought it last time, maybe 2 or 3 years ago, it was round about 10 €. Investing in film stock makes way more sense than stock investment I would say. :D

if you purchase one roll of film once per 2-3 years, you make the producers to increase prices to cover its everyday running costs. Buy regularly, and producers will have economy of scale and will be able to keep prices lower, due to high and regular sales figures. And after all, for you in EU, making several thousand Euro per month, does it hurt you to pay 10 eur? How much pizza costs in Germany?

Your photography is so beautiful. I tend to agree with you that this new film is probably Kodak. I remember the old Fuji as being more green biased. Kodak was always more red biased. Your work shown here (translated from film to digital for the video) appears red biased, the greens do not show the saturation of the old Fujicolor. Beautiful Canon (coming from a Leica M guy). Canon lenses are great and you seem to have the best camera to match your lens. Keep shooting and thanks for your review.

I'm not certain as to whether it's Kodak gold or the fujicolor 200 formula... What I am certain is that it's Kodak made. It has Kodak edge markings and the same Kodak plastic canisters. There are some stores near me that still have the last batch of the old fujicolor 200. All expiring 09-2024. One store just replaced it for the new stuff (oh well...) And the price went from like $19.99 to $23.99, so that's no fun, still, better than what CVS charges for Superia (great film though. If you don't like it, shoot at 320 and 250 or 200, you might like it more.) But I'm slowly buying the last stocks and will probably soon be moving it from my fridge to the freezer for the sake of long term storage of the good stuff.

I would say it’s almost certainly Kodak film. Fuji has made it pretty clear that they, as a company, are not manufacturing film anymore. Period. They’re done. They’ve killed off all their film stocks. And since Kodak has the color negative market cornered, it’s definitely Kodak film inside. I just don’t understand the angle in doing that. I don’t understand putting a different name on it. Just market it as Kodak film. “Fujifilm” has also released Fujicolor 400, which was pre-release priced at $10/roll in the beginning of May. Now it’s $13/roll and it’s not even for sale yet. I have a love/mostly hate relationship with Kodak and their monopoly. On the camera, I absolutely love my Canon P. I have the 35/2 as well as the 50/1.4 which I HIGHLY recommend if you don’t have it already. But I love the clean lines, the build quality, and the operation of the P. Even the film advance is buttery smooth. It’s a joy to shoot with.

I've shot Fuji 200 Made in USA... I've shot Fuji back in 2015... I've recently shot couple of Pro400H 120 rolls, and plenty of Kodak film of course. What the difference? Negative mask color. 8 years old Fuji 200-135 looks like old Pro400H and Pro400H I've shot couple weeks ago. While new Fuji 200 more like Kodak. When I've tried to male some RA-4 prints I've noticed, that one filtration settings meet almost all Kodak films, except Ektar... and it was about Y:60 M:50 C:0 (for enlarger and paper I have). But for Pro400H I have to use something like Y:0 M:50 C:20 - dramatically different. And new Fuji 200 is OK with Kodak settings. Most likely it's just KG200 marked as Fuji. I believe, that if Fuji decided to quit film manufacturing, they will share some recipes, technology and patents to make their heritage alive.

Only Portra 160 has pastel colors. Portra 400 altrough it's also more like 160 ASA realy or 200 max, has very decent colors. For people I prefer Gold 200 that is warmer, has very good exposure latitude with nice details in both lights and shadows, has finer grain vs Kodak color plus, and use to be more afordable like 2 Euros many years ago...but Portra has even finer grain. I also used kodak prophoto 100 but it has a different color mask and most labs don't have that and so the colors and contrast get weird. Superia has horrible colors like shity dark reds and fugly cold atmosphere and shadows, but has fine grain and decent exposure latitude and so I used superia 400 for artsy industrial compositions. Fuji superia Reala has better colors vs regular superia but I still prefer Kodak for people. Fuji PRO 400 has decent colors atipic for Fuji and also Fuji Provia 100 and 400 have decent colors.

@@ribsy I shot it side by side, two identical cameras, same exposures, same lens copy, same scene, same light, same batch of developer, same scan at home. There is no difference. I still have the original Fuji emulsion in the fridge as well (dozens of rolls btw). USD8.99 is quite blown up. I bought about 200 rolls of the Fuji labeled Gold for USD16.99 per 3-pack at my local camera store - they resell it to walk in customers only at the price they buy it from the distributor. Half of my fridge is full with that stuff at around USD6 a roll (including tax). Doesn't get cheaper than that for color film.

That looks like kodak color plus, obsolite vintage look, too grainy, too contrasty and too low exposure latitude with too dark shadows, a little warm decent colors. I hated that film for anything, even more so for 35. Fujicolor superia 200 has horrible fugly colors, like shity dark reds and ugly cold atmosphere and shadows, but at least has fine grain and has no stupid vintage look. I prefer Gold 200 for people, even more warm, very nice warm atmosphere and shadows, good contrast, high exposure latitude with nice gadations in both lights and shadows. For artsy industrial stuff I prefer superia 400. Superia Reala has better colors vs regular superia but for people I still prefer Gold 200 even though Gold 200 has higer grain ( but not as bad as color plus...) and fuji pro 400 has even better colors atipic for Fuji, as is also Fuji Provia but provia 100 has only 4 EV exposure latitude. The perfect film does't exist. I would have liked Kodak ektachrome E200 colors but warmer like at least kodak color plus, but with Fuji Provia 100 grain and kodak Gold 200 exposure latitude, and made multispeed from 12 ASA ( like to shoot wide open f 1.7 in daylight @ only 1/1000s) up to 6400 ASA, for 35, 120 and 220.

I hope that, in the future, even if Fujifilm is not gonna produce new film that they are at least producing at Kodak with their chemistry. We already see that Kodak (Rochester) is willing to produce customer specific film emulsions, e.g. Lomography. Why not producing the old Fujifilm formulas? If only Fujifilm is willing to do that which I doubt because... Fujifilm 🫠

@thomasa.243
@thomasa.243 Год назад
@@ribsy Yep, if they are allowed to. Developing a new formula is expensive but using what they already have or getting a formula directly from a client is absolutely possible. I have a hope that Alaris and Rochester are combined into a new (old) joint Kodak. You have one company from start to the finished product which makes a lot easier.
