The idea is to basically force them to break the glass. It’s loud, it draws attention and is a better deterrent than just allowing them to rip open a sliding door or window with force.

Get a rubber cap for both ends which will apple for a tighter fit, as the dowel age they may shrink. You can add a little paper, wood shavings between the dowel and the cap. Also helps if initial cut doesn’t fit as well as you would like.
This is legit good advice… To me though. I find it strange that people need to be told this. When I was a kid even, every house I was ever in that had sliding doors had either a mop handle or something like this set up already. It’s sad to me that people need to be told this again. Like that video I saw the other day of some guy climbing a ladder, with a a machete meanwhile telling the people filming he was about to murder them. Which he proceeded to do unhindered. Why didn’t someone just push the f ladder and let the cretin fall to what he deserved? Our world is so broken. I am so grateful that we still at least have awesome men like this making videos I didn’t even know that we needed ✌️
Dad has some good advice, however I was going to respond with exactly what you mentioned. Many years ago, I had to replace the rollers on an Andersen doorwall. I never thought about it until that moment as to how unsecure door walls are. Quoting a TV bra commercial from long ago, just "lift and separate".

Getting similar in the Uk. Someone climbed a LADDER with a machete here yesterday and killed the occupants. I’m still trying to understand why nobody pushed the ladder whilst he was shouting that he was going to murder them. Now I think about it… seems obvious that they were more scared of being sued than stabbed because “that kinda thing doesn’t happen to us”

That’s the point, makes it a little bit harder to get in which could be a deterrent and makes it louder so that you can hear when someone enters your home and prepare yourself
They also make locks that go on the back side of sliding glass doors and has a bolt that goes into the upper frame does the same thing costs a little more
@@besteraever80s99 the top to the bottom window into the frame, I have 2 holes one for it closed and one for when the ac unit is in. Super easy to do and definitely secure

But you’ve made noise and alerted anyone near by to your presence. Also If I come in the house and see a shattered sliding glass door I know something is wrong. If they get in and close the door behind them I know nothing happened and they might even still be in the house.
You could do all that and then somebody will just break the window out of the door. I'm not saying don't focus on home security, but you're number one home security should always be a firearm.
