I am a silk painter and we use alcohol, sizing and vodka mix to create some really cool textures on the silk. We use silk dyes in the CMYK color "palette". I've been a watercolorist for almost 25 years and painting on silk is almost exactly like watercolor! In fact, being a watercolorist has made me a better silk painter and vice versa!

Great tip, would loved to see it when all dry later on..I bet this would be great for backgrounds too. You could also apply it in spots with a paintbrush or a qtip etc..play around, with 2 cents of alcohol!..love your attitude!

This would be amazing for water and beach components in a painting, and maybe even texture in a sky, especially with a loaded brush, wet on dry. *wanders off to try this technique* Thanks Julie.

To my knowledge the English watercolor artists in the 18th century used Gin to achieve effects. Maybe two effects: texture in the watercolor and a nice buzz. 😀 Of course the gin did not have the strength of rubbing alcohol, but you said, the strength doesn't really matter that much.

Don't wait, do it now. I am relatively new to watercolor, about a year into it. I am 66 and really wish I had started sooner. This channel and a few others in you tube offer free tutorials. It seriously has changed my life. Good luck to you! Good paper is key!

Julie, what happens when you paint over that application? I enjoy your tips!
@maryspringer1442
@maryspringer1442 Год назад
Good question! I wonder if it being alcohol and that evaporates that it wouldn't move your paint around or cause blooming as it would be dry and evaporated. But if you tried to paint on it while still wet..perhaps something interesting..hmm now I want to try and find out! lol
@silverpromidi
@silverpromidi Год назад

You will cancel the effect painting over it when wet. You can layer over this once it is completely dry. It’s beautiful… give it a try. Thanks for your questions! 😊 Julie

This was fantastic! Thanks. Will give it a try. Today, as a test. Would the alcohol influence the lightfastness of the paint?
@juliedavis8957
@juliedavis8957 Год назад
No… lightfastness is solely determined by the pigment characteristics. Alcohol will play no part. Thanks for your question! ☺️ Julie
@tabbi888
@tabbi888 Год назад
weird, I was just thinking I wonder what would happen if I experimented with alcohol, I wonder if it would work with brush techniques or maybe spraying on cling wrap ( seran wrap for American's) then applying to the watercolour. funny how I was thinking this ,then I turned on my phone and this appeared as the first suggestion on my RU-vid feed, maybe they can read minds now, ha ha.

I want to point out that working with 50% alcohol does not work as well as 70% and 90%. Before I knew the strengths of alcohol I used 50% and was disappointed.
