My uncle owned motel in Lincoln City Oregon at beach. Right down from best candy store on coast. Every morning uncle an i walked beach for rocks, xolored glass an Japanese glass globbed! He built all his equipment, was joy for kids!
Some great ideas there Mike, I will try some. Just bought 2 old tumble machines here in the UK for £49, which included grits, polish, 3 barrels with obsidian in , about 4 pounds of rocks in 2 trays, 3 bags of ceramic media, some jewellery rouge and even a timer plug. Second hand is a great place to add to your supplies.
The drill press idea i like very much. There are smaller models that i can find often at fleemarkets here. They probably turn a bit slower too so they´ll be perfect. Won´t be faceting with it though but it´s a start. At least it gives you more control overall. Cheers
My problem with tumblers is that i have no control over the shape. I have jasper and some other stuff that i find have a nice form naturaly and i fear that the thumbler is going to round the corners out to much. But i deffinitly would want one later down the line for the more rounded stones. Cheers
Hi Mike, VERY informative video! Your drill press grinder is really slick! You certainly put your noodle into overdrive!! Splash-guard catch basin bucket - love it!! Home Depot usually has a good selection of diamond blades. Thumbs up! Safety first! Jim
Hmmm, I think I have/had a drill press that was left at my parent's house years ago when I moved. Will have to double check on that now. I also might know of someone who has a wet saw for tile that I can see if they are going to upgrade anytime soon. And our citywide rummage sale should be coming up here next month. Oh, the gears in my mind are spinning now, but I'm not too mechanically inclined, so that might be the only gears I'm spinning, so most likely not building my own😁 Thank you for all of the great ideas!
About that dop station. I've been looking into making cabochons lately, and I came across the video in the link. About dopping with hot glue. I haven't tried it because I don't have all the equipment yet, but you might give it a go. I suppose you have some hot glue laying around somewhere :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-71TirmeNPyI.html&ab_channel=LapidaryDave
