Maybe the canister unscrews like the Fox and Rock Shoxs. Just make sure you have the right grease and oil. Just use the same stuff as Fox/Rock Shox. A clean and oil change is probably all you need so don't worry about new seals if you can't find any and the Fox/Rock Shox seals don't fit.
Good to see a kid not in his bedroom and online. Let him make his mistakes, from this first hand knowledge he'll soon work it out. Keep it up young man.
*Grandson lives out from town on 18 acres and the **Latest.Bike** is great on trails through the woods, on gravel driveway, and through the yard. Keeps them active. Thanks Easter Bunny*
Danielb4life Im sorry you got so many negative comments for this. I think its cool that you made a video that showed us how the shock looked. The reason I came across your video was because I myself am looking to buy the same shock so thank you for posting this video. Also, I want to add that it doesnt matter how much you spend on your bike, what matters is that you are enjoying what you are doing. Keep riding, and keep making videos!
Everyone saying "buy a new bike" or "your bikes shit" yet if he got a new good bike just because he's young everyone would be calling him spoilt or you don't deserve that bike. He can't really win
Luca Exactly! I give the kid credit, he’s making due with what he has and has the ability to use a couple tools and install his own shock. That’s honestly more than most kids his age are capable of doing these days.
Just noticed this comment. He got a downhill bike for $1500 and people are calling him “spoilt” and “rich” “skilless” “start with a cheap bike” sad isn’t it?
Been happy doing upgrades on my Wal-Mart bike, a Mongoose Ledge 3.1 29". Upgraded the drive train, converted from a freewheel system to a cassette system, upgraded to hydraulic brakes, and I'm going to be upgrading the rear spring to the air shock he was using. The stock spring is just too stiff. I originally ordered the $49 DNM air shock for my bike, but after seeing this video, I went ahead and canceled my order and ordered the one he had.
I rather see a kid learn to do his own bike wrenching on a budget bike now than when he's an adult wrecking an $8000 bike and doing the walk of shame into his LBS and paying someone to fix his mistakes.
That’s a big upgrade my man! Some people say to not spend money on this bike, but I would upgrade it slowly, instead of saving to buy a better one. I did this to my Walmart bike and I do not regret. Idk if in the States people buy used cheap bike parts, but here in Brazil they do. Every part I upgraded, I sold the “old” one on the web or in garage sales.
My bike has solid reliable new but not expensive components on a cheap old piece of shit frame, does everything an expensive bike does but mine doesn't look like it's worth stealing.
That compressor cant even get close to the 160 - 225 PSI needed for the shock. Rebound it will surpass needed. I have one of theses, I will upgrade to the 42RC as this has really low rebound capacity, is for lighter applications, not downhill.
I won my first race in a bike like yours, I bought mine at Academy and only changed the fork. Who cares what other people ride, I have since upgraded to much more expensive bikes but none of them compare to my cheap Schwinn when it comes to geometry, it was perfect for me.
Daniel, thats your name right? What ju first of all need to do is to stop listen to ppl with bad attitude. You are just a young kid and you will leard a metric ton of shit about bikes (im 26 and still learning). Here is some good advice for you. 1. Look at a LOT of videos on youtube how to build and set up bikes. 2. Buy 1 new mekanic tool a month and you will soon have all you need. 3. Stop spending more money on this bike, its fine as it is (as a entry level bike). 4. If you want so upgrade this bike to look more pro there is meny ppl on youtube that have vids about how to do this for a small buck. 5. Start saving money to a 1100 dollar *hardtail* trail or XC (i dont know your style). A hardtail is less forgiving then a full suspension and you will learn much that way. And you will get a realy nice bike. Good luck, shred the trails!
Daniel. Fuck these nay Sayers. Do what the guy above suggested. Also.. key point here. To be a really good rider focus on fitness. Core strength, legs, everything. I see that pitbike engine on the bench. I assume you guys ride Offroad. Motorcycles too. Good. Great cross training for Mtn biking. Use all the hate for motivation. You can be a total badass. Choose that and snub the haters. I'm 54 and ride a KTM 200 and mountain bike also. I bought the same shock for my 2002 K2 Attack 3.0. Every now and then I can show a young guy on a $3k bike my backside. Train hard and show the assholes. Good video dude..
I agree with most of your points. but why stop spending money on the bike? for ANY bike the components are 10 times more important then what the initial price point is. look up the guy who literally made a bike out of washing machine parts and at the time he entered, was literally the most aero and broke speed records....using parts and bearings from a washing machine. a nice frame is cool to have, but it is much cheaper to buy a low cost bike then upgrade parts as needed. there are even pro racers that will upgrade parts instead of buying a $10K bike. and when the time comes, you could just buy a new frame and swap all your parts, and boom. you now have a $1k bike.
the air compressor will put a large volume of air in your air shock but may not reach the required pressure, also i think your shock still looks stiff maybe because there is too much air volume in the negative chamber. man what you need to do its borrow a shock pump off some one or buy one even better and setup your sag and rebound but first let all the air out of both negative and positive chamber. then do positive first then do negative then recheck positive after. your sag should be around 30 to 40 percent if its enduro kind of riding and 20 to 25 percent for bike park or dirt jumps.
Nice upgrade !! One advise, dont spend too much money in your entry level bike, I did that and I regret it. Seems you love mtbing, so save some money and get a better bike before putting more money in your bike right now. BTW ride hard and beat the crap out off your bike then try to get a new one Good luck buddy
Nice video. Don't listen to the haters about the schwinn. Truth is, alot of these guys buy expensive bikes and aren't that great of a rider but yet they bash people with less costly bikes. Keep on riding and fixing up that bike. Once you've outgrown it, you can always transfer your components to your next bike
Great video. Nice to see it's possible to upgrade cheap bikes with better shocks. My question is how do I know what size shocks to buy. my e2e is 145mm. Can't find air shocks that size... Confused
Props to you kid! Keep doing what your doing. Just ride and don't let ppl get you down with that cheap bike bullshit!! It's ppl like you who are gonna keep this sport alive!
Don't listen to all those haters man. Just keep what ur doing and enjoy ur life. These ppl cannot see other ppl happy. Btw love ur vids and keep making more video like this. Once ur channel got more and more subs. All this people will shut their mouth. Greetings from malaysia.
Zikri Zainuddin agreed however they do have a point, you shouldn't put as much air as you can with a compressor, you should blow the seals. But still don't listen to them. There just hating because your a kid and you made one mistake. Great vid bye.
Nicely done man, stay gold pony boy. Its something you should be proud of, rather than spending time for online gaming like the rest of other teenager.
This is exactly same as SR Suntour ones ... which both are very close to the Rockshox ones thats lighter and different material used . All the bikes whether from $100 to $13k are all made in China or Taiwan ... its just slightly demand higher quality and quality control on their batch + branding ... 20 years ago i went to those factories and saw the beginning of Giant Era ... whatever brands is out there cheap or high end all are under the same big boss ...
@Dylan Gerlach I think you lack IQ :) very Typical :) Well buy some $500 shock and go join your Tour de Mountain rofl :) Sure you get first place from the back row :)
Danielb4life, I liked your video, simple and straightforward, exactly what I was looking to do with my bike. Just a question, what size is your bike 26", 29"...? Well done...!
Lol i bet half the people who who gave a thumbs down cant bunny hop and they were gealous. Keep it up kid im glad your riding a bike and not spending all your time in front of a tv.
Easy and cheap upgrade is to Mount a frame chain protector. Low end gears makes the chain hit the frame. Please adjust your handlebar grips. The handlebar is sticking out outside your grip. That is dangorus. Needs to be flush with the grip and a end plug cap chould be there.
Hey I know this video is old but I really enjoyed you upgrading this department store bike. If you still have this bike laying around I would really enjoy it if you could upgrade the handle bars and stem and maybe the crankset to a hollow tech. Keep up the, good videos though
420sixnine Thanks dude, sadly I no longer have this bike, I sold it a while back. I would have definitely changed out the bars and stem, the bars were angled down and the stem was really long. I was actually surprised how many views this single bike got. This video and the pedals/grips video got a collective 300K views...
I currently have a Cannondale Super V400 using an old 145mm eye-to-eye (ETE) rear spring shock Fox Vanilla X and apparently the EXA A5-RR1 shock has a 8mm (i think so) bolt size hence cannot be fitted onto the Super V frame which has a 6mm diameter hole/eyelets
Everybody is saying upgrade the fork, however I feel you should save up in the long term and buy a new drive train. That includes front and back casset, derailiers, and cranks. Plus hubs. Normally cheaper bikes come with crappy drivetrains, so you should upgrade it. Expensive yes but worth it. Expect you pay more than $500 ik big number but that's wyhat mountain bikers do
id buy a new fork, bars, stem and some 510 shoes if i had to keep the bike. Ultimately id buy a cheaper second hand bike that is maybe a few years old. bikes that were $3000 a few years ago are sold for as low as $800. bargain in my mind. but yeah a new fork would be a good idea and i personally ride with 510 free-rider canvas shoes and i would 100% recommend them they grip extremely well and are really good if you go trail riding often
When you sit on the bike, the blue rubber ring should be about 30% compressed. This is apparently how you’re supposed to configure it instead of looking at weight ratings which can be a little general and incorrect.
So, is this holding up after using the air compressor? Everyone sounds pessimistic but that wasn't that large of a compressor. A car battery compressor would be even lower air volume and someone you know probably has one. Also, have you found it to be much better than the spring shock?
fire7side Yeah, it’s been holding up perfectly fine for over a year, no air or oil leakage. I get why everyone was freaking out, but it can’t possibly be the first time anyone has ever tried that. It was definitely a much needed upgrade over that really cheap spring, it actually used up the travel opposed to not using any with that spring. I had used the bike for about 6 months after putting the air shock on, and it was a much comfier ride.
I never did do anything after the shock really. After seeing all of these comments, I realized that continuing to spend money on upgrades wasn’t too worth it. Spending that money on a higher level bike would be a smarter decision off the bat…
Heard of a shock pump? Don't be cheap just pick one up, they are under 15 dollars! I bought one for my cane creek air shock and it works great. Don't use a air compressor again, good video!
Hey buddy, good stuff. Don't let rude people in comments about your bike get you down. We all start somewhere right? When I was your age I could not afford any bike, even an $80 Walmart bike. Now at 30 I have a Specialized Enduro Elite carbon frame. Its still middle line (4500) compared to the flagship 9000 S-Works enduros but still a badass bike. I say you should get a shorter stem absolute 100%! I went from a 60mm to a 30mm and it sits you back further allowing you to be more aggressive on downhill stuff. That stock stem looks like it's 100mm plus which is way too much. If you want I would send you the stock stem off my 2017 Specialized Enduro Elite, it's 60mm with 6 degree rise and prob just about right for your bike and it's geometry.
I know the vid is a bit older but dude Y don't listen to the haters, if you want, you can get hidro discs brakes cheap from aliexpres, Shimano for very good prices, take the br whatever model, they will stop you any time no problem and no hustle. Get your self an epixon fork as well, air fork with 100,120,140mm travel for 120$ and its damn solid. Any one who says it's not good is talking shit. Also don't know what driver twin you are rocking, if it's any hollow tech it's OK don't worry about it, if it's not, you can get a Chinese 1x hollow tech for cheap, Shimano slx as well tbh.. And get an microsshift 11speed derailleur and casset and you have your self a killer budget bike
I might consider buying this in a different size. But, I’m also looking at the RockShox Monarch RL. I know it will fit but it’s also dummy expensive. It depends on some timing and when I’m replacing my current rear suspension
1) Get a proper high pressure shock pump, compressor wont do the job necessary. 2) You cant rebuild theses cheap shocks, you replace. RS/Fox have rebuild kits, you pay more. 3) If the bladder is blown the shock will be bottomed out and not hold pressure. 4) Your 'Preload' shock travel should be no more than 1cm, this is what the blue washer is for, this will be the correct pressure for you and your bike weight.
2:15 I can´t take these off my new shock, there´s not enough space to put the screwdriver between both surfaces. Is there any method for taking these off? Edit: In my case it´s an EXA Form 588 rl and these bushings are two pieces of aluminum
It was also a little finicky for me, but another way you could do it is put the bushings on 2 separate pieces of wood so that there would be enough space to hit the center metal cylinder. You can just grab another piece of wood, like a stick, and hit the top of it with a hammer. Hope I explained it well, but best of luck!
@@DanielB4life Thank you for the info. In my case these bushings are just two pieces of aluminum one in each side of the eyelet, I think there´s no civilized way for me t take them off. Gonna try, wish me luck haha
I read that DNM are a bit heavier than the top rear shocks that costs $200-$400. I have used Fox RP23 and it was okay, but it was soon replaced by a Fox DPS. The design on most rear shocks are rather simple, so your DNM shock is probably fine until you go for a more advanced bike. Recently a few enduro racers actually switch from air to coil shocks that has a new kind of coil shock lockout lever ($$$).
So guys apart from the eye to eye and the stroke are the shocks all the same size? Can't seem to find the eyelet sizes anywhere and I need a new shock, any help?
Wow, you're not suppose to use an air compressor for bike shocks, there are special suspension hand pumps for this. Surprised you didn't ruin the shock
The angle the suspension is at mean it needs serious or direct impact to move. Honestly it’s worth upgrading the bike entirely. I can see how you don’t have a suspension pump. But by looking at a 3x7 drivetrain instead of a 1x11 just really makes me think that you could have just upgraded it i turkey as a nice new bike would have better suspension. Not trying to hate because maybe you can’t afford that? Either way hope you have fun on it.
I would recommend forks bars stem and wheel upgrade. Its a nice entry level bike but if you buy new parts you are eventually gonna want to upgrade your frame and if you do try and make sure the new frame will go with your new parts. Good luck with your bike and hope to see some new content on your bike. Peace
Things ill do if ill live in America and if I would be you: Being happy with my new air shock , buy a cheap air pressure pump cuz 200$ bike or 9000$bike = the same air pressure pump haha , buy some waterproof grease cuz your shock bushing were showing scar marks due to friction then make a cutted tire blatter protection for the frame chainstay, if LL still have some of it maybe a chain DIY tensioner so I dont get noisy when jumping then still being happy on mountain bikes😉
I am impressed that the shock worked after putting an air compressor to it. I am sure by now you see your mistake and have figured out how to set sag and what not. Have fun
Jacob Kenyon the compressor didn’t actually inflate it, it had 150 psi from the factory, that was way to much for my weight, I saw that if you want to release a little bit of air, you can’t just do it like a tire. The pressure from the compressor and shock equalized, leaving about 110 psi in it.
