This week we have a quick tech tip on protecting switches and relays using a FLYBACK DIODE. This inexpensive part will greatly improve the life of electrical contacts powering inductive loads like the solenoid for our Triumph TR4 overdrive. It is easy to install and will save all kinds of headaches down the road!
We used a 1N4007 diode, though many other diodes in the 1N400X series will work. This is a very simple solution to a much more complex problem. A more thorough solution might also include a resistor to dissipate the voltage in addition to a diode. We opted to simply use a diode.
There is some speculation that original Lucas relays included flyback protection. It is also possible to buy automotive relays with a diode built in. However, these are a bit more difficult to find than the standard version. Adding a cheap diode to a cheap relay will likely save a bit of money.
This video is part of our Triumph TR4 DIY interior installation series. We are installing a Moss Motors honey tan carpet kit in our Triumph TR4. The underfelt is the synthetic jute kit from The Roadster Factory. Instructions for the TR4 interior kits are difficult to find. Hopefully this video is helpful for anyone out there attempting a similar project. Many components are similar between Triumph TR3, TR4, TR4A, TR5, TR250, TR6, Spitfire, and many other British cars.
