Great tips Audrey. I would just like to add that a cheap way to keep things looking great is to care for them day-to-day. Wipe off shoes after use, handle everything like a delicate item, use laundry bags, hand wash, polish leather goods periodically. It adds to the longevity of ALL items regardless of their price! A little care goes a loooong way!

Exactly ! I have cashmere sweater that I had for over ten years , shoes also if you put shapers into them and have them cared for by a good “cordonnier” (can’t remember the word in English)

The other thing that is necessary is a small crochet hook, so that if you get a pick or pull you can catch it and pull it to the inside. I carry a small sewing kit when I travel. There is an annual conference and my friends know where to go for emergency repair. Fashion tape is wonderful and I use tape for dog hair.

Conquer the iron! I have found that nothing works as well as an iron. The trick is buying a good one. Rowenta is the brand for you! An iron will smoothie a placket, set a seam, make a pocket flap smooth, sharpen a cuff. I’ve tried steamers. I love my iron!
@BubblyViolin11

My two are waterproofing spray for shoes and zippered laundry bags for delicates. The spray has kept my nicer suede and leather boots in tip top shape for years, and the zippered laundry bags make doing laundry so much easier. I will hang one on a pants hanger where I change, and plop my bras and socks when needed. Haven’t lost a pair since!

Hi Audrey! I have a suggestion, if you haven't already done a video regarding it. How do you go about physically picking an outfit? Do you start with your mood and the weather? What piece do you start with, and build around? Do you lay your outfit together to get an idea of what it will look like? Thanks kindly!

All good advice Audrey. I must be one of the few people out there that enjoys ironing. It's relaxes me and once swipe of the hot iron and wrinkles are gone :) Can you tell I'm a "results oriented" person haha. I also have a steamer that I use on more delicate fabrics. The clothing shaver gets a lot of use at my house too. Thanks for the tip about the rubber bands I knew about using them on sleeves but not with sweater waistlines. That's a great tip.
@marahelwig2237

I quite enjoy ironing, and find that it is relaxing as well. The only caveat is that you do not want to be doing your ironing at the last minute. I find it works best to have your outfit ironed and laid out the night before, complete with shoes and accessories.

I also enjoy ironing. Due to arthritis I bought an iron which has a separate water tank (so the actual handpiece is lighter). So it is a bit like a steamer, you can't scorch things and it is far quicker than ordinary ironing! Highly recommend it. It is however important to let garments air for a while, since it leaves them ever so slightly damp, so I hang them on a clothes rack.
@maryokeefe5351
@maryokeefe5351 2 года назад
I actually thin ironing is faster than steaming, too. The one caveat is if there is a hidden stain on a piece of clothing. Apparently the iron bakes it in, whereas a steamer can release it. I tried a hand-held steamer and found it quite lame. Maybe a commercial-grade one is required for good results.
@robinhoward4204

I enjoy ironing as well when it's not too hot and humid, and find even old, much loved t-shirts benefit from a quick press if you're going out.

Hi Audrey, Great tips you’ve shared today. Using a zippered laundry bag for unmentionables and delicate tops in the washer on hand wash cycle is an inexpensive help; I’m able to wash my finest hosiery, too, because ouch the prices on these have doubled recently. Using lipstick for rouge is a help when carrying a small handbag, too.

Great video Audrey, as always! One of the things I try to do is always wash my clothes in cold water, delicate detergent, and hang to dry. It saves money on water and electricity, and helps maintain the fabric and color of the item as long as possible, thereby keeping your look upgraded. Thanks so much for the video and all your content!

A fabric brush is better than a lint roller, as the lint roller leaves behind a slightly sticky residue on a garment's surface, which in turn attracts more lint. Good in an emergency, but better to use a brush. A steamer and a de-piller are absolute necessities.
@KT-nq8dw
@KT-nq8dw 2 года назад
Your tip about using a steamer versus an iron is excellent. Today there are so many fabrics that are man-made and chemical based and one has to be so careful with an iron whereas you get great results with a steamer.

I just love your videos, Audrey. Everything about them is so well-considered, stylish and practical. I'm writing to thank you specifically for mentioning a clothes steamer. I just downsized to a beautiful but very, very tiny home; it's on the waterfront in beautiful British Columbia, and I feel so blessed to wake up every morning to a gleaming ocean, but the compromise is: no closets! I can't hang anything up; all my clothes are in folded in drawers. I've been wearing shirts with folds and creases in them for weeks (yes, too small for an ironing board: no laundry room!). After watching this video, I ordered a deluxe hand-held turbo steamer and just got it this afternoon. OMG. It's like magic. Creases melt away in a second. It tucks under the bathroom sink and takes up no space at all. And it's so much easier and quicker than ironing. Now I can feel much more put-together every single day. You changed my life, my dear!

I understand on the ironing…I live tiny so I have a mini ironing board and an affordable iron. I just couldn’t find the right steamer that wasn’t super expensive or bulky. I did see a video by Style at a Certain Age where she gave the ratio for white vinegar & water in sprayer to release wrinkles. I have only used it on cotton items and it’s works to a point. Thick cottons are harder but I still prefer the crisp look of an ironed cotton shirt. Great tips ❤️

If you don't have a steamer or if you don't want to take your steamer on travel, hang your clothes on the bathroom towel rack, and run a hot shower for a few minutes with the bathroom door closed. Hair ties to hold up sleeves is such a great idea! I like boxy oversized tops and cardigans, but the sleeves can be too long for me and I like 3/4 sleeves anyway so this is a great use for extra hair ties! Also a good reason to hold onto my hair ties if I ever cut my hair short again. Also a great tip about a sweater comb opening up many more options when thrift shopping.

These are such helpful tips and reminders! Is the tape comfortable with regular movement? Does it last long, hurt to remove or damage the garment? You didn't have it on during the steamer part. Speaking of the steamer, this is a great back up idea for my iron! I actually *enjoy* ironing, it's therapeutic and a workout! 😄 But it's also time consuming. If you have pets a lint roller and a vacuum are essential survival tools. I always have guests "take a roll" before they leave! Doesn't the sweater comb/shaver degrade the quality of the garment? How often do you shave a garment? I've only had the pill problem with tee shirts, never sweaters yet. Thanks for these tips and reminders!

So many great questions! I hope Audrey answers. My guess for the pilling sweaters, probably de-pill once a season, depending on wear. Since Audrey is so fastidious about her clothes, I doubt that she would use a sweater shaver that would damage her sweaters.
@KelsaurusRex
@KelsaurusRex 2 года назад
Double sided fashion tape is generally very comfortable. I think it could be uncomfortable if there's too much of it, or if your movement is restricted and the garment pulls away. I mostly use it for sealing the area between buttons over your chest, or to close a deep neckline, so it's not often directly on my skin. The peace of mind of not spilling out or having a wardrobe malfunction is definitely worth it! Always remove it when you take the clothes off so it isn't washed/dried on accident. It's a one use kind of thing, mine came on a tape dispenser so you'd rip off the right sized pieces for each task, then peel off the backing. Doesn't hurt to remove it from skin, but it might pull hair so you could use oil to release it if that's the case. It's never damaged my clothes, just be careful on really delicate stuff or maybe avoid loose weaves so the tape doesn't pull any threads. A pill shaver would actually cause less damage than manually pulling off pills from a sweater. Picking them off pulls some fibers that the little ball is attached to, whereas a shaver would cut it free, leaving as much fiber of the yarn intact as possible. Be careful with it though, you don't want to accidentally make a snag.

Can you please tell us the make of the white blouse you steamed in your video? I’ve been looking for a white shirt but hate the stiff cotton material most come in. Yours look softer, more fluid. Thanks - love all your videos!! 💕

Lint rollers are also indispensable for getting your own hair off yourself every time you brush. I keep one in the bathroom and use it over shoulders, back, and arms--over and under arm's length. I also use it to pick up hair that ends up on the bathroom floor.

Food and drink stain I spot clean right away if a restroom is nearby. If left unattended, stain can be permanent. I use a little dish detergent to clean inside collar and armpit area of white and cream garments before laundry machine. It helps to get rid off or minimize yellowing from body oil and sweat. Light color garments should be laundered after each wearing unless you don’t care if they start to permanently yellowing. Cold water and air dry make fabric and seams last longer.

You may be familiar with the Joy Mangano, I have several of her steamers, including the travel size because I travel a lot. I love them. I’m trying to find a link for her full size but no luck. I hope they’re not discontinued. Loved this video! ❤️

I use my lint shaver every time I wear a sweater! Love it! I also have a steamer, but iron frequently - I should try the steamer some time. With two cats (one white and one dark gray), I often need a brush, too. I never heard of the tape, though. Good ideas, Audrey!

When I was a teenager I lived in a cold climate, ALWAYS wore sweaters and a de-pill shaver was the best purchase. I was shocked at how much better things looked. Also worked on felt toys that pills over time.

I was washing dishes this morning and shoved up my sleeves, which reminded me of how stylish it looked when you did it...and then I had to laugh at myself, because some people are out there finding elegant ways to keep their sleeves off their wrists (for the whole day, I imagine) and I'm over here crocheting wrist warmers in every color because many/most of my shirts don't have sleeves long enough to reach my wrists. In other words, the look some people work to achieve is the look I work to avoid, lol. But my hands get cold easily, so keeping them warm is more important to me than style.

Great tips! I also think shoe polish and a stiff shoe brush for suede shoes. I polish my shoes all the time. I have some very expensive pumps and boots that are years old but still look great bc I polish them. I even used sneaker cleaner on my white leather sneakers.

You must have really thin arms to be able to use a hair tie near your elbow. My circulation would get cut off. I agree on the steamer though!

Great video topic! Excellent tips - lint shaver & steamer absolutely, also quick boot polisher (sponge & polish in one), & mesh laundry bags for intimates. Somewhat related: gel bra strap cushions (for larger-chested girls) keep straps in place & reduce shoulder pain. Was gifted a set from physiotherapist - life changing! Posture is better & outfits feel better when the undergarments don't cause pain.

I use individual shoe towelettes made to quickly clean shoes if they don’t need a full classic shine. Removes street shmutz and protects leather and leaves shoes looking fresh but only takes a minute.
