Brad M. Carlson, better known by the stage name Bun E. Carlos, is the original drummer for American rock band Cheap Trick. He recorded and performed with the band from 1973 to 2010 and remains a member of the band as well as a co-founder, partner and long-time drummer for the band. He is also the band’s archivist of photos, posters, video, and audio recordings of all the bands shows. Bun E. was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 as a member of Cheap Trick.
It’s rumored that Bun E, short for Bunezuela, hails from Venezuela where he learned drumming and where his father was an industrialist moving around South America. His family was instrumental in the building of the Panama Canal to which Bun E, who is fluent in English, comments, “That was a long time ago.”
On June 24, 2016, Carlos issued his first-ever solo album, Greetings From Bunezuela!
In this epicsode, DC takes his show, Barside Jive to historic Mary's Place in Rockford, Illinois on October 25, 2016 to hangout with Bun E. Carlos, legendary drummer for rock band Cheap Trick. This year (2016) proved to be a BIG year for DC as well as Bun E. Not only did Bun E. and the other 3 original members of Cheap Trick, Robin, Rick & Tom, get inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame but Bun E. released his very first solo album, "Greetings From Bunezuela" available on Amazon. Bun E. is the coolest dude ever and I am blessed to call him friend. So, grab your sticks or even a fly swat if you got one and get ready to play along with the famous Bun E. Carlos. 8-) \m/

Best interview ever! Bun seems a nice guy, I'm sure that's why the rest of the band took advantage of him. Cheap Trick isn't the same without him. At least I got to see him a couple times back in the day.

A very cool memory for me, being from Peoria I saw Cheap Trick at the Palace theater when I was sixteen. This was pretty early in their career and the show started at midnight. There was an opening act I think they were called "Rockets" or something close to that and Bun sat in the seat right Behind me to catch the opening band. There were very few people maybe 20 or so in the theater but Cheap Trick played like the house was packed and I was always very impressed by that as they really gave us a great show! As I remember the opening band was pretty good too. I have seen them a couple times since and while they were always good, that midnight show will always be my favorite Cheap Trick concert! Thanks for the Memory fellas!!

Saw C.T. in Cleveland 78. Being a drummer myself I admired his not so simple simplicity cigarette dangling from his mouth. Like Ringo, you can pick off the song just in the first few bars of the beat.

Random search today for Bun E. Carlos.. and thankfully I came across this video clip! EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT interview with Mr. Bun E. Carlos!!! 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿 So glad that he is not forgotten 🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿 I remember going to see him in Pekin Illinois and in Decatur Illinois both with the original members I’m glad I’d got my chance to see all the original members together! But like 99% of the Recording artist/bands out there they don’t always stick together, lol.. “Pun Intended” But I didn’t know that there was any animosity between any of the band members of Cheap Trick. Bun seems like a very grounded easily approachable rock ‘n’ roll legend! Into hear him speak of the other band members with no issue but always referring to Robin Zander as “The Singer” hmmm 🤔 Clearly there is animosity between the two. And then the part of the interview where he speaks of the rock ‘n’ roll Hall of Fame induction and to learn that “The Singer” Has his own dressing room is more confirmation. I’ll have to do some digging to find out what exactly happened between the two ? But if it’s over money it should’ve been easily forgotten and resolved now Robin Zander is worth north of an estimated 230M now. Is women’s make up line in addition to his 40+ year career as lead singer of Cheap Trick should have easily financially diluted any issues the two could have monetarily. @barsidejive 🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿🤟🏿

Japan is a huge cashcow for bands/singers/groups of all countries. They really restrict the distribution of their music there and they don't give music away like other Asian countries. If you are popular in Japan...then you have made the bigtime.

Seems like such a normal guy, being from Indiana, with family in Rockford, yeah he seems like anyone who would be at a family reunion, hes done some impressive stuff, accomplished a lot, earned respect, but would probably rather tinker in the work shop, have a beer with ya, jam with ya, shoot the shit, i sense absolutely no ego at all. Just a good dude with some really good stories to tell the grandkids ya know. Probably mows his own yard kind of guy seems like.

I love the nerve of Bun in his willingness to go with his look through all of Cheap Tricks career! It's one thing for Rick going with the nerd cliche, since people can identify (for better or worse!) with it. But to make your stage persona a middle aged assistant manager at a photomat or safeway takes balls, since that look is something no one would ever want, even in an ironic way!!! And points for always having a lit cigarette while playing! Something that is almost impossible to do, and shows real commitmant because (even chain smokers will have to admit) it is extremely annoying and unpleasant having smoke going up your nose, erasing any enjoyment! (guitarists have the option of taking it out of your mouth and holding it in the tuning pegs. Drummers don't have the option of taking it out of their mouth!) A talent that I have never seen mentioned!!!

The Japanese sure do love characters. If I'm understanding this correctly cheap trick are lucky to have had an opportunity to show proof of concept for their strange stage personas before some fathead record company exec came along and made them kick out the chubby guy before being willing to sign them.
