As a drummer, I really appreciate how fluid Bun is behind the kit. He just rolls around it like nobody’s business and that left hand is playing ghost notes all over the place. Stick twirls and cymbal chokes, to boot. A true master at work. If anything, I think he’s improved with age.
I agree. He has improved his snare play with a rolling thunder beat that is so smooth. It's was his day to shine with his peers in the audience. I saw CT 3 years ago with Dax. He's okay I guess. Bun E. makes it so effortless.
What I didn't realize also (being a drummer myself) is that Bun can play the kit left handed and right handed. Not many drummers can do both and do it well. I'm a right handed drummer, which as a drummer is kinda like being a left-handed guitarist. It isn't natural, per se. But growing up drumming right handed, I began to see other right handed drummers like Phil Collins, Mike Gibbins (Badfinger), etc, then when I saw the video for Cheap Trick's "The Flame" saw Bun play right handed.
Bun E. Carlos, a drummer who earned his place through dedication and “keeping the groove” in the history books; “Live At Budokan “ is now in the Library of Congress 🤟 as “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant “ (and he’s still entitled to 25% of the every dollar earned in the band’s catalog)
I'm not sure what all of the ruckus was about between him and the other members but he to what I've learned took the high road and didn't get into character assasination.
Glad they set aside their differences for an evening to come together for this. It's a special night. Rick's son is a very capable drummer but this band doesn't sound the same unless these four guys are on stage. Bun E. is so much more than just a timekeeper. These guys really sound just as good as they did in 1978. Amazing.
They need to PAY him and bring him back FULL TIME. It's ridiculous to short him OR ANY DRUMMER on writing credit and $. Especially a big band like this.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame performances have exposed two very real but overlooked truths. The drummer matters!!!! Two seconds into "I Want You to Want Me" instantly displays that it was the perfect and solid drumming of Bun E. Carlos that made this band feel as good as they did!! He is most certainly the "Ringo" of his era. Feel first..feel second..rinse and repeat. Perfection! This would again be proven when Heart was inducted. After decades apart, the moment drummer Michael Derosier kicked into "Crazy on You", the stars and planets aligned, and the world was right once again! As soon they changed bands and played "Barracuda", everything was wrong again! Striking contrast just one song removed from each other! And please, Robin Zander is simply one of the greatest rock vocalists of ALL-TIME!!
Bun E has the magic groove. Swagger and swinging rock drummer. If he was born 20, 30 or 40 years earlier he’d be known as of the the jazz drumming greats. One of the very best of all time and always a huge part of the amazing Cheap Trick sound and style.
Bun is one of the best damn drummers on the planet. Listen, his kit is small, but perfect. He don't need a spinning stool to get to everything or even an idiotic rollercoaster. He just jams. Robin's vocals are as great as they were in the late 70s. Rick Neilsen is one of the baddest lead guitarists on the planet. He's melodic, but hard! Last, but not least, the inventor of the 12 string bass guitar, Tom Peterssen. They're masters!
i am 56, played my entire life.....there has never been or will ever be a greater rock band than Cheap Trick....i remember the Aragon ( we called it the aragon brall room.....with Aldo Nova......you guys made me care about music, i am forever grateful.
Loved how they put differences aside and played one more time for the fans who we all very much love them. Robin & Tom also showed some class when they went up to Bun E. right after playing Surrender to shake his hand. You guys are the best!
LOL. Think about what you just said. Bun and Rick have a 30+ year history together. God knows how many arguments they got into. You know neither one of them, yet still call Rick a prick. Get a life.
Nope. He's pushing the beat, playing at the front, but he comes down consistently on the one. The kind of rock drummer audiences love and guitarists weirdly have problems with.
Top musicians always praised CT. I’ve loved them since the beginning. Kiss, Joe Perry, Billy Corgan ....they all know what it takes to make it. That’s why they respect CT. Fantastic band
Sickiest thing about life is getting old but that's nature and everyone goes through it. Thanks to music we re-live memories of the past. Rejuvinated on how joyful it was back then!
Lol the way Bun E. bangs right into Dream Police, and just destroys it down the stretch, as always...quick drink and drives them into Surrender. He is just so money. Miss him. Love this band.
Glad to see Robin can still hit the notes. So many acts, by the time they get inducted, the lead singer can longer hit the high notes. Wait until Bon Jovi plays this year, and you'll know what I mean.
In 79 I saw the original Beach Boys in concert and perhaps realized how damaging it is to see a bands need for alternate singers to hit notes the originals can't anymore. Robin Zander is so great as a rock singer and never seems to run out of gas.
Saw them open for KISS on the LOVE GUN tour. They stole the show, not an easy feat when KISS were in their early prime. I'l never forget "Ello Kiddies".
@@danebrammage4330 I saw that tour '77 Love Gun/Alive II in Indianapolis, except AC/DC opened for them. Talk about energy and madness. Bon Scott carried Angus Young on his shoulders and walked around Market Square Arena. We didn't know AC/DC yet in America, but we found out that night. We kept cheering and the warm up band actually did encores! Never saw that happen before or since. I'll bet KISS was pissed. But to their credit they came on and did a great show. My first concert at 12 years old.
Thank you for transporting me back to my teenage years for a few minutes! One of my all time favorite bands! Cheap Trick was so underrated! Such a great performance
I remember riding up to the Stables bar in Loves Park Illinois with Brad Carlson (Bun E) driving his Chevy Nova in the 80s. He liked to hang out in the back of the bar smoking and watching the band of the night. Good times.
Damn...the hours I spent listening to this band in San Diego in the 70's and 80's...and Bun E. Carlos...you STILL rock your (_*_) off my man. Crazy how you ALL are STILL kicking so much ass. I'm teaching my grandkids to sing Cheap Trick songs (on long drives in my car...) and they ALWAYS want to do the air drum solos...(ok...I love doing them too) Thank you guys for making my teenage years so GD fun and happy. Congrats on an honor that was WAY overdue. Now....COME DO A SET IN DESTIN FLORIDA. Dammit.
Paula Campbell I saw that tour! Graham Parker was the opening act. These guys sound as good now as they did then. Brings back my youth- I can still rock to this !
40+ years and never sounded better!!! They're the perfect example that even talent no matter how great still sometimes takes an equal amount of hard work and a never quit attitude!!! Thank you guys for all the great memories and the music we are still listening to in 2020. You guys ROCK (PUN INTENDED)
1979 I was 9 going on 10. I love this Song: ( I want you to want me ) On the Radio. A neighbor said, Cheap Trick is the name of that band... I grew up loving Cheap Trick 🎉😊👍.
Saw them for the 1st time this New Years Eve. Was not expecting much for a band whose members are upwards of 70 years old...best live band I have ever seen, and one of the loudest.
I actually stood a first date up to head up to Navy Pier, when it was Chicago Fest before It was the Taste and Daley transformed the Pier. I could not believe what I was witnessing. The only thing I wish the would have thanked were the countless DJs in Chicago that played their music on iconic stations WLS/CFL/LUP. What an age of Illinois music
My son just mentioned this band , and we watched this together. Thank you for all the songs. Pretty touching to watch time pass to the tunes of eternity.
Saw CT for the first time in '78 at the Chicago Amphitheater. I was just 15 and have been a fan ever since. Congrats to them on finally being recognized by the R&R Hall of Fame. Well deserved! 👏👏👏
*A band isn't the same without their original Drummer, once Bun left I stopped seeing them in concert, sadly , this will probably be the only time you'll ever see him ever drumming with Cheap Trick, they just aren't the same band without him*
I was fortunate enough to see them last January, at a corporate gig at the Hard Rock in Atlantic City! One of my favorite shows. I got a few picks from Rick too!
Emma, search for the concert at Chicagofest ... positively epic. Opened with STOP THIS GAME ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-94-jgx5vljk.html
This is where it all started for me... first concert ever: Cheap Trick and .38 Special at Hara Arena in Dayton Ohio. 1981, forty fuckin years ago, I was thirteen and it all made sense from then on. Rock and roll as guys like these could deliver it can change the world. Certainly how I viewed it forever. Thank you for all you gave us guys
Saw them at our local college at Palmer Hall . It was awesome. I still have the guitar picks that I caught as Rick was tossing them at us. They still sound great. 🎶 Good times.
My older cousin had a poster of Cheap Trick that I fell in love with when I was seven. I remember checkered Vans shoes pattern, the typewriter font, the guitarist with a silly hat and guitar with two necks, and the drummer that looked like a private detective or detective at the office. Those are the visuals that stuck with me.
CONGRATS CHEAP TRICK from THE MONDAYS New York. Got to spend some time with these guys over the years, lots of great memories which included working them for WRCN in The Hamptons. GREAT TIMES congrats guys!!
