Few guitar effects are as iconic or as recognizable as the Electro Harmonix Big Muff. The original version, which became unofficially known as the 'triangle big muff' commands huge prices on the used market. Luckily for us, there are some recreations and clones out there at more reasonable prices. In this video I will explore the EHX Triangle Big Muff (reissue) and the micro clone the Mooer Triangle Buff. Are they different? You tell me.

The Big Muff That Changed the World
Own the Muff that started it all - the Electro-Harmonix Triangle Big Muff fuzz pedal is a faithful re-creation of the original '69 Big Muff pedal. Electro-Harmonix founder Mike Matthews says, "this reissue absolutely nails that creamy, violin-like sustain and musical tone at a price a working musician can afford.” It's the same singing tone heard on early '70s recordings by Santana, Steve Howe, Robert Fripp, and many others, and now you can have it in your own rig without scouring the net for a vintage original. Complete with an LED status indicator, true bypass switching, and your choice of 9-volt battery or optional AC power, the Electro-Harmonix Triangle Big Muff reissue puts an iconic piece of guitar history on your pedalboard.
The Mooer MEP-TB Triangle Buff vintage fuzz micro effects pedal packs an incredibly BIG sound into a very small package.
The Triangle Buff produces legendary rich, creamy, violin-like sounds and a very nice fuzz tone.
Features:
Volume: Adjusts volume of fuzz
Tone: Adjusts tone colour of fuzz
Sustain: Adjusts gain of fuzz
The pedal switching is True Bypass, so the sonic integrity of your instrument is never lost.
Rugged full metal casing and quality switching in a small and exquisite design.

Great comparison man! I use a Big Muff Rams head currently but i was actually liking the Mooer. I don't mind getting a cheaper pedal for ones that I'm not stomping on constantly just for the construction aspect. Appreciate showing love to both humbuckers and single coils. Solid work! Thanks!

Hey Jason, great comparison as always. I'm not surprised you found the Elk sustainar different. My understanding is that it was an attempted Japanese clone of the EH triangle & ended up sounding different. And as with any of the muff variants users will have their preferences. It's famously used by Wata in the Japanese band Boris. She can create an enormous wall of 'noise'. Cheers. 🎸🎸🎸 .

Apparently there are around 8-15 known variations of the original big muff. I recon they just used whatever parts they had at the time.

@@JasonAyalaSpare More than likely....and it adds to the mystique of the pedal. 🤣

Could not tell the difference here at all. I have a couple of Mooer pedals; their RAT clone (Black Secret) is on my live board, and I actually did a recording with it just the other day, it does the job perfectly. Also got a Fuzz Face (Blue Faze) clone. That one is weird, it's super fuzzy, has a great sound, but has absolutely no head room. Great for recording but no good for live if you want to get any sort of volume boost, But for the money, you just can't complain.

So if you want to go cheaper the Rowin Lef-606 is a rebranded Triangle Buff. Got mine round the $30 aussie mark.

I just don’t like fuzz. Ive been playing guitar almost 30 years. And everytime i try fuzz, it sounds broken. I love amp distortion. I never use anything dirtier than an overdrive as a pedal
@JasonAyalaSpare

I can respect that. I'm not much of a fuzz user either, but it does sometimes provide a different sonic texture.

I give those cheap things maybe 2-3 years and they’re in the bin. Sorry EHX is so $ down there.

Even if they'd sound identical, sometimes you want something with pedigree and are willing to pay for that.

I'd agree, that's why I have a lot of Boss pedals that Behringer and other brands make cheaper clones of.

Since finding Mooer & Donner, I haven't bought an overpriced US pedal.

I did the opposite. I started with 15 cheap pedals. Ive replaced them all with 200$ pedals over time. Only one i got left is my cheapo klon

I hope you're having fun. I'll do the same when I start hearing any difference at all. ;-) @@Ottophil
