Inspired by Adam Savage's Sortimo storage ideas and fuels by a small budget, I designed and built this small parts storage rack using dollar store bins and recycled wood.
TOTAL COST WAS $9

Great ideas and execution. I'd like to see what it looks like with all the small parts in it and how you like it after a year of use. Great to see the use of existing materials and the planning that went into it.

Its almost 2 years old and the trays have taken some damage, which I expected, but it was from heavier items like lag bots n stuff. It is awesome for smiller lightweigt items. I like being able to just grab my drill and a container with 3 different lengths of drywall or construction screws.

I think this is nice love some of your ideas. I need cheep solutions for organizing . I have made a hardware tool crib from 8 school lockers . My farm has a collective of 2 people collecting over 30 years . I have an extreme challenge to be able to sort and access my inventory.

Kudos to you Kevin for posting this video! I am very much one who will always look for a way to make something like this on the cheap if I can. Not every woodworker can or wants to spend ridiculous amounts of money on things like this, so it’s always great to have ideas like this available. I see the crazy prices of small parts storage containers and wonder why anyone would spend that kind of money when a simpler version is so easily made!! Great work!!

*_Thanks a lot Ben!!!Even if I was a wealthy man, I would probably still hate to pay good money for something I could make :)It is just my nature and I attribute that quality to my upbringing and parents :)_*

@@MakinSawdust - I’m much the same! I have no problem investing good money into something that is worth buying and/or will make me money. But like you, I hate paying for things that I can make myself! Plus I enjoy the challenge!

First of all, I love that you are using recycled materials. One of my favorite places to get wood for my shop projects is checking FB-MarketPlace and Craigslist for free wood furniture and or office furniture. Also, I drive into the city 20 minutes away on bulk pick up days and find some really great items and metal too. There was a broken storage cabinet that had a dozen drawers to it and made using good materials. I took apart the drawers that were all solid hardwood, even though most were broken and the side panels Those drawer parts became dividers for my power tool cabinet/cubbies. There was some prep work like cutting off the blind dovetails, but it was well worth it. Especially now with lumber prices soaring to an all-time high. I often get comments like, doesn't it bother me the shop furniture doesn't all look the same? LOL, and I reply, that is what paint is for! Great job and your shop looks great!
@MakinSawdust
@MakinSawdust 3 года назад
thanks for the awesome compliment and story. I have always liked repurposing materials, and now with material prices , heck it doesn't phase me because I have a bit of a hoard :) and I can add some creativity and character to the shop. I have been making some slatwall toolholders recently using some spalted maple.

Great idea! Just an fyi: If you don't have a label maker to identify each container you can use blank address labels on both sides so you don't have to stress over whether you have the right side facing outward. Say hi to Billie Jo and Nora Cakes for me! Love you guys! XOXOX

I know this is an older video, but this is a great idea for someone who is into Lego, and is looking for a somewhat inexpensive way to sort it. I like the idea of repurposing old furniture, and using what you have...those containers are great, and you can access one without disturbing the others. Nicely done!!!

The chaotic person I am, I could fill boxes like this up, and never remember what I've put in there. I do have 2 "cabinets" exactly made the way you did (recycled particle board / MDF) and when I'm looking for some part I start at the top box, making my way down to find what I'm looking for in the last one! Years ago I switched to plastic and glass jars (I have hundreds now) and made shelving for all of them. Now I can see what's not been hidden.... (I even don't need to label them). Keep safe, all the best from lonesome hill!

Very nice build. Just found your channel and subbed. Your concept could also be use for metal baking pans, if the weight of the fasteners exceeds the capacity of the plastic trays. I also have started to stock up on various similar plastic containers (bulk packs of course) for some future hardware/ small parts storage. Even if I had the budget for bunches of the HF complemented storage organizers, I dislike them because I have to pull out the whole tray, find a place to set it THEN open the lid. Not very efficient. Your system minimizes that issue.

I'm a rock star! ;) I love the CP-10. But I do find it's fairly brittle. It helps when material has a bit of give to it. I've also discovered CA with rubber additives for toughness; usually it's black. I've been tempted to grab roadside furniture myself. No truck though. lol

In this instance I used the 2P10 because it was a static joint and not really going to be any stress exerted on the joint. Another is to ensure a quick bond and a totally square cabinet very easily.

@MakinSawdust

a few lbs of wood screws will make them sag a bit, but depending on the actual style of container that you find really would dictate the weight.

Thanks 👍 for stopping by Mark. I also thought early on that they may be flimsy as well, but after I opened them up and handled them, I determined that they would surely be sufficient. I am going to start loading them up today and organizing. I still need to find a big shovel to clean off the bench area that the subscribers RARELY see. what a disaster LOL
