We tried Tim Ho Wan and felt very similarly about it unfortunately. But we've tried Din Tai Fung. Eric had it in Taipei and I had it in Shanghai. We live around the corner from one now and our wedding anniversary is on Monday and we've already made plans to have our anniversary dinner there! They have a few Din Tai Fung chains in the US as well! SO YUMMY!
Pretty much the opposite experience for me. Had Din Tai Fung in multiple cities, and they all taste the same and pretty boring, but it's a cheap dumpling place, so I guess it's okay for the price. Tim Ho Wan on the other hand was some of the best yum cha I've ever had. But i guess its unfair to compare the two, they are very different cuisines.
The first restaurant is one of the best yumcha in Hong Kong, i'm surprised you didn't like it. The second restaurant is actually shanghai cuisine, and it's got branches all over the world.
Enjoy your videos:) Could you please put the info about the places you visit in writing down below the videos? I can't quite catch the names. It would be nice to be able to visit the places you mention in this video and in your last one.
You must be tripping ... we have eaten in Tim Ho Wan about 6 times, couldn't stay away from the place. It is amazing. We are well traveled and have even eaten in the Adria's restaurants in Barcelona ... spent a shitload of time and money in France doing restaurant hopping ... I usually love your stuff ... this one disappointed me ... go back to Hongkas and give it another go ... it is one of our fav places ..(love ya anyway ;-) )
I so want to like Dim Sum but I really struggle with the texture! Glad you guys got to enjoy a nice meal out :) loved your reaction to the price #sorrynotsorry! Everyone deserves a splurge now and again
First world problems when you get your Michelin star restaurants mixed up... Haha! To be honest though, the second's food did look worth the price tag.
Pretty ironic, because the first place has relatively more expensive dishes and generally better rated. They must have ordered an insane amount of food in the second place.
Michelin men do not know what they're talking about out here.. getting a Michelin star is a sign that you can expect prices to go up and quality decrease
Never get to try din tai fung, we got one now here in the Philippines. When they opened here, there was a long line of people waiting for their turn to eat there ( and a few days after that or till now I think ).
aw I went to another THW in HK and I really liked it, famous eateries in HK really like to franchise out to other countries and the THW where I live (Singapore) is easily twice as expensive over here. ALSO DO GO TO TAIWAN ITS THE BIRTHPLACE OF DIN TAI FUNG AND IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST DIMSUM I EVER HAD (also they're known for a lot of mountains and nature and culture so!!!!)
The original ThW is located in Mongkok....food is ok but service sucks which spoils the experience...nearby you have One Dim Sum and DimDimSum which to my mind a better overall experience food and service ise !
Hey Aly, I've watched all of your recent videos and think I can safely say you're a vegan or at least a veggie which is awesome! I know you've got a few vegan and veggie fans (including me!), would you consider doing a video on how to eat out when travelling with a specific dietary requirements? If so that would be amazing as you're my fav travel blogger and it would be awesome to know how you manage this when abroad 😊
+Bearkat210 Hey man, no need to be rude. If my comment offended you it wasn't my intention. Veganism is a way of life and philosophy. I simply wanted to know if one of my favourite youtubers shared this philosophy or not. Just as I'm sure if you shared a similar value with her you would like to know. It's cool if you don't like it, I'm not trying to "convert" you. The comment was only directed at Aly, no-one else. Anyways, sorry you feel the need to comment on my skin colour. The fact that you have shows you have some sort of fear or ignorance towards those who only appear "different" on the surface. Wise and aware people know that skin colour is only as relevant as hair or eye colour. To think any different is to be very much imprisoned by your own ignorance. Anyways dude I wish you all the best in life. May you find peace and happiness on your journey ☮ "A negative mind will never yield a positive life."
I'm a Hong Kong local, IMO Tim Ho Wan is probably overhyped. I reckon there are better dim sum places else where , like the Maxim's Palace at the city hall, Central. Anyway glad you have a good experience here!
Which location did you go for Tim Ho Wan and Din Tai Fung? Are any of these 2 dim sum places suitable for solo travelers? I'm not sure if I would look weird eating Dim Sum alone? Din Tai Fung seemed a little empty?
The first one you went to (Tim Ho Wan) was actually pretty bad especially the one in Olympian city (aka Tai Kok Tsui). Have tried once and was REALLY disappointed.
I think your attitude is the one that needs to be appeased by these restaurants. If Tim Ho Wan served you wine after a 2-hour wait would end you up in a different story, right? If Din Tai Fung didn't have a cozy ambience and attentive waiting staff, you wouldn't expect yourself to stay that long, right?
What a lovely thing to point out to someone who's just spent ages making a video for us, that we watch for free. Didn't your mum ever tell you, if you have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all? Shame.
I'm pretty sure she knows that, and what is you telling her doing for her or anyone else? She's actually made comments in another video about people pointing it out... What's the point of doing that other than to make yourself feel superior. As if mild acne is anything of substance to concern yourself with. Its like saying oh you have a mosquito bite. Or you have a bruise. As if the person doesn't know or it makes any difference.
