Here's how to set up camera switching and channel inversion on your CheaterKwad. What's a CheaterKwad? It's a quadcopter with a backwards-facing camera that lets you fly backwards while still being able to see where you're going.

I CANNOT tell you how many times I have run into people who said "Oh I thought about doing something like this but never got around to it". I really appreciate hearing that more pilots, certainly ones more talented than me, got their hands on it and I look forward to hearing their impressions. Hearing your view point and perspective change after flying it is huge. I dont take credit for being a first to put two cameras on a drone. QuadDuad and his "The Prestige" video was uploaded back in Sept just as I maidened my first build. But where I went with 3 cams and 3D definitely seems like I went full tilt Cheating and still havent seen anybody go that far with it yet. With luck more will surface as people figure out ways to build them/fly them and put them to work. I think 2 cam upright builds will be hugely beneficial to all the CineWhoop stuff that is coming along thanks to their low camera uptilt and silky flying behavior. My newest build is a 2cam upright 5s running 2150kv motors and intended to rip on 6in props. /edit And as far as the RotorRiot content. I really hope you guys got some great follow footage as that is what these things will accell at.

I think for the pilot will be a big fun to fly with two cams because you can see the quad motion from new angle. also LOS spectators will see something new for sure. I would like to see some Gopro footage because that must be interesting also. thx Josh to making the cheater quad and show us flying footage. this was the first time for me to see how the two cams works. I would definitely would like to build one and fly it.

Hi Josh, I would like to do this someday right now I'm trying to find a way to get my FMS 1400MM F4U-4 Corsair setup for a Headtracker camera and a landing camera underneath the fuselage then back to the HT camera in the cockpit. Thanks for the information.

I’ve had a rear facing camera for a few months now and have been using the stock settings. Shit was weird lol. Thanks for posting this JB. For some reason the XLite needs to be set to a weight of -200 to work.

DEY TUK AR JARBSSSSS!! i actually just used a micro aio cam and vtx separate from the rest of the build running off a 1s. i thought it would make a really cool way to capture some awesome cinematic footage flying through gaps and flipping to the backwards image and things like that.,

Josh I got an error as soon as I hit update speaking about the nirvana any idea... it is the ugfpv nirvana version I contacted them because I cant get my xjt module to work they said the update would fix the battery telemetry... shit this could be a video lol sure would appreciate it

I don't have an open tx transmitter, not really in the market for one at the moment, but curious if this could be done in betaflight software? In theory it could be, but I suspect there are just no options to do something like that. Just running a cheap turnigy evolution that I got for $25 new on sale and could not pass up for that price (still just on sim now)

uavfutures did a cool vid with headtracking on a plane... with the two camera ability FC boards, i wonder if it would be hard to use one a quad with maybe a split using head tracker and a normal fpv cam mounted in the normal position, i'm thinking briefly use head tracker to lock split at an angle up or left right etc, and then switch back to normal fpv cam... i know its actually possible but i'm wondering if its too hard for your brain to mess with the view like that. over all i'm thinking for cinematic freestyle with camera looking sideways in forward motion or upwards or whatever... is it even possible to fly a fast quad with headtracker without brain melting?

I'm doing one of these too, frame came today, still adding parts. I call mine the "PushmePullyou" quad. I'm thinking if you put a timer on the camera switch that throws the VTX into pit mode for 1/2 second or so during the changeover, the Rapidfire RX should re-acquire the snyc signal on the new camera, thus allowing the Rapidfire to work correctly. Maybe just have neither camera selected during the delay (no composite video) would work as well, but I think shutting down the VTX would be more likely to work well. The amount of delay may need some testing, depending how long the Rapidfire "hangs on" waiting for the signal to re-appear, but it should do the job. If the delay is very (too)long, where it makes the changeover harder to fly thru, maybe put the pitmode on a momentary switch so you can blank it for a second after you're flying solid again and are ready for the loss of video. Your thoughts?

I think that is a really bad idea due to loss of video and delay that it takes to acquire the signal and sync. The more you mess with it the longer you will be flying blind. Part of the reason I started doing this was so I could fly multiple gaps backwards. Losing video and praying for it to come back isnt confidence inspiring just before you fly under a vehicle. As for the nickname of the kwad, what are you going to call it if you wind up doing a 3camera build that is 3D capable like I have? Your name might get impossibly long. Instagram is starting to get other pilots using the term and the beautiful thing about it? It is so unique that you dont get a lot of other trash results. Just found a new pilot "jpfpv" last night thanks to the tag. RU-vid used to be the same way until it started associating other drone videos with the tag for some reason.

If using the Tango 2 radio, can I set up those commands as well? Ive been flying hd and now diving more into analog so the analog tech is newish to me. Thanks for your help in advance (whoever decides to answer)

Can't wait until more flight boards come out with Multiple camera input. I like the front/rear setup. I would have one quad with front35/rear35 and another quad with front 5/front 45.

On your angles... best I have found is close to 20-30 Degrees for the forward FPV cam and no more than 20 degrees gopro uptilt. For the rear FPV cam best to have maybe 10-20 degrees uptilt tops. Otherwise you compound the GoPro uptilt when flying backwards and you just stare at the sky all day. But if you keep that in mind you can also potentially put it to work for you. As for two forward cams.. one at 15 degrees below the GoPro and another at like 65 degrees above the GoPro, with the gopro mounted at like 40 degrees. That may be my next build. Also have an even more crazy 3D build in mind but gonna leave that one as conceptual for now.

TBS Tango does not use OpenTX. It's a totally different O/S. I'm not sure whether it can do this.

I wonder how well this would work if you put the two cameras on a 3d quad and have one of the cameras upside down. Could you use camera switch to change the 3d controls as well? I'd love to see that work.

I've been wanting to make one of these almost the same way but with one of the little video switchers that work off pwm but I was never sure if betaflight would pass pwm over a uart. I think I saw some way to set it up on servo page I think, but heard something about it not working in newer versions of betaflight.

Bicks Multiview. You can trigger it off PWM or as a PinIO by Betaflight config. It is a TINY little 2 cam switch the size of your thumbnail and maybe 11 bucks. I dont control my switch by the flight controller but rather from an aux output from my Crossfire Nano RX. Chances are you can easily add a Multiview to one of your existing favorite FC.

A lot of people have asked for this in the MultiView line of micro fpv cam switchers. I've done a ton of R&D on the concept but everything is bulky, expensive and latent, since the actual video processing takes way more compute power than simple switching. I'm still looking at it, but it's mostly out of the question given modern technology.

One really cool shot in my opinion is when you are flying backwards and a branch suddenly appears in your face. But the rest of the backward footage feels pretty silly. I feel like I am driving a race car, and then suddenly i just turn around and start staring out the back window. Why would I do that? If I saw an explosion on the ground, that would be something that I would definitely want to stare at while flying away. That would make sense. So maybe I want a subject, like a 'woah what was that' rubber neck type of situation. I dont know. Sounds like it will be lots of fun to experiment with. Looking forward to seeing what clever stuff you think up.

Yes, this is exactly the challenge of the cheaterkwad: to use the backwards facing footage in a way that really enhances the viewer experience instead of just being a dumb novelty. It will take way more than the four or five packs we had in making this video to get there. But I firmly believe that this is a valuable brush to have in one's creative palette.

@ michael wilkes Try hitting the CheaterKwad # and you might see a few other shots that make you pause for a moment. Up til recently I have mainly been practicing transitions and posting what kind of shots the CheaterKwad is capable of. A sampling of "hey see something you like?" My "2 Kwads 1 Park" was me working on a bit of that flow. Now the challenge moving forward is to use it much more sparingly and not to have a sense of "beat the dead horse" kinda look at what I can do flare. Now it is time to save it for when the use of it might be called for. Now backwards building dives or mountain dives can be a thing while shooting gaps without having to rely on luck. Now with a 3D capable rig maybe I can get some more hang time and defy gravity for just an extra second or two longer without having to resort to editing tricks. As Josh said, after being hands on you start to see where this becomes a tool and less a novelty. I am a car nut as well. After having chased some karts around a local track I have things in my mind's eye that could turn vehicle chasing into vehicle following with ease. Fly backwards and fly the line while a car comes up from behind with your gopro looking right at it. Switch to forwards cam and you will be looking at the follow car and able to keep framed shot for moving up/over/around it to come back into following. This is a potentially powerful tool.

Yes, it can work, but you have to figure out how to set up the channel inversion yourself. Most modern programmable radios should be able to do it.

I mean.... I set it up the way I show in the video and I flew it so that should really stand for itself. But think about it. On the yaw axis, left is always left and right is always right, no matter which direction you face. Because you are rotating about the yaw axis. So yaw axis directions don't change.

I have a qx7 and love it. I paid like $120 for it and it will do everything you'd ever need it to. Recently added an r9 system for long range and so far I'm loving it.

NorthropFPV I like the form factor of the Nirvana as well as the frysky x-lite I have the flysky Evolution but i only get about a half mile before I get beeps . The QX7 is nice but big . The x-lite I don't like the battery setup . I got a 2.4ghz booster coming going to try to see if that works . I have a friend that will sell me a qx7 for 60 but he couldn't do the crossfire mod to it. I would of got that off of him

@@accordkilla9244 I hear you. I never tried the crossfire mod on my qx7, too expensive for my taste. I haven't done any real long range testing yet on the r9 but initial results seem promising. I had to get an external lipo because the lion tx pack couldn't handle the r9 at full power.

IDEA! mount fpv camera 2 upside down and configure your transmitter to not only switch the camera (with a switch) but now instead reversing YAW and MOTOR DIRECTION! You'll have a cheater 3D quad that flys "normal" in terms of your FPV feed! imagine that gopro footage! thoughts?

@@Dread_FPV precisely.... pun intended meaning a rearview inverted cam can allow you to fly with total precision backeards and inverted. Only reason there was a delay in me going from CheaterKwad V1 to CheaterKwad V2 was waiting on the slow boat for 3D props. 3Cam3D is my version 3.

Neat idea but like you said it is cheating. i do ok flying backwards with just my one front facing fpv camera. sure i make mistakes and sometimes crash but my videos are real and with some practice it's not that hard.

@Chad I didn't see your comment as bad, I started on quads 3 years ago, and only FPV for the past 2 years, the ease of getting FPV quads to fly well has accelerated so much in the past couple of years, it's all great fun. @KRONOSFPV I haven't learnt to tune them either, which is why my main 5" is an Emax Hawk 5, great tune from the get go :)

You still have to tune your build. And in fact the transitions of trying to switch from forwards flight to backwards flight take a fair bit of planning depending on how complex you are gonna be. The basic yaw spin for forwards to backwards is easy enough. But where you go from there and learning to do it in tighter spaces. Or to do it in 3D where you are having to remember which axis has inverted and which has not... It aint easy while also trying to remember composition for what is now a backwards facing camera.
