At the brain and neural level, it helps your friend reinforce the behavior of having short-lived relationships that will affect her in the long run when she wants a stable relationship and to build something meaningful. Its very common there, beacause economicly and cultuarly is far more favourable to be in a relationship, even with someone you dont like, then single. Trust me, their men are cheating just as much.

This issue, in MY opinion, has a lot to do with how Japanese people struggle with sharing uncomfortable feelings with their partners. There seems to be a lack of communication, keeping things inside, and not wanting to seem selfish or “inconvenience” their partner by “nagging” or expressing unhappiness. That one girl even mentioned being in a relationship with someone she doesn’t have feelings for and she couldn’t stand it anymore, so she cheats on him. Why not just break up? Why not respect him enough to leave?? Why? It’s probably too inconvenient and too much trouble to break up with him- cheating is easier and less confrontational🙄 The fact they’re all laughing about it just goes to show how common it is.
I also wonder as far as upbringing if there tends to be more avoidant attachment styles in the population because of the type of parenting that tends to happen. Avoidants tend to prefer either more casual seggs so they don't have to deal with sticky emotions and keep their significant other at arms length away or those who prefer to just avoid relationships altogether. Not to mention a dozen other traits of an avoidant that would fit this.

I was just in Japan for 3 months. I tried dating a few people there, but even after meeting a few people I seriously do not understand their mindset. It's like playing a game when you don't know the rules. Now I'm in Thailand and people here are way more direct and straightforward about what they want, and it doesn't feel as much like a game.
Careful with women in Thailand, I had 3 girlfriends from Philippines, one in the Philippines, one in Hong Kong, and one in Korea. I love Filipinas, and would love to move there and start a business. I hear so many horror stories that if you date a Thai girl, you not only have to care for her, but her family (financial support). After dating the first on I had that lived in Philippines (she cheated), I found it was better to get a girl that's from there, but works abroad and makes her own money. Plus they're usually too busy to have a real social life and or cheat 😂. Just my experience of being a passport bro since 2016. Different culture may have a different approach in expressing love but it’s universally accepted that cheating is bad as it destroys integrity which what makes a good person and instead makes one a narcissist. You’re going on the presumption based on this one clip that Japanese society as a whole accepts cheating (which they aren’t as they’re very much a conservative society) as the norm and not the fact that each individual reacts to these actions differently. And no, there is no “moral weight” as they’re aware of what cheating is/means and how wrong it is but still accepts anyway. The fact you justify that makes me question you even know what cheating is. What you refer to as a consent between the two partners isn’t called cheating, it’s called an open relationship and that’s fine as it relies on the consent of both parties. Cheating on the other hand psychology hurts the victim as the cheater is going out of their way to look for sexual gratification behind he/she’s partners back in which she/he cannot find satisfaction in their own relationship and instead of ending it honestly. They find enjoyment in the “adventure” of going behind their partners back, which is a showcase of narcissistic behaviour and selfishness instead of taking full responsibility. Of course there are instances of infidelity that may perhaps be justifiable for overall well-being such as for instance a man or woman forced into an arranged marriage to whom the partner is abusive and the culture forbids separation but in this case, it isn’t one of them. They are free to choose but they don’t.
I heard that it’s common for a Japanese man to have one nightstands and it’s not cheating as long as they’re not catching feelings. That was the most cultural shock I’ve had yet. I don’t think anything is going to top that 😭
Not necessarily true. I have a friend whose husband cheated on her with a call girl. It’s definitely considered cheating, even if there’s no physical sex.

I don't think it has to do with finances because most couples in Japan don't live together until they're actually married. Personally, I think it's just because people like the thrill of it OR they don't have the will to cut off their relationship (breaking up with someone is emotionally taxing, even for the person initiating it). The other guy had a good point though--it's important to keep in mind that many, if not most, if not all of these responses are 1) hand-picked to make an interesting video/short, 2) taken in Tokyo, 3) likely taken in parts of Tokyo known to have young people that will be more interested in "risque" behaviors. Like, if you want to understand Japanese culture, you can't only look at Shibuya or Ginza. You need to also go to places like Shimbashi, where everyday Japanese frequent.

Many of them seem to place much importance on the concept of giving "face" so as long as it's not out in the open, a lot will stay willfully ignorant. Doesn't make it right but cultural differences. Many also enter a relationship just so they can say they're in one, not necessarily out of love which is a concept more prevalent in the west. Interestingly, the west has an opposite problem where personal freedom is valued over responsibility. Just an observation/my opinion.

That's why sometimes cheating is the only "fun" you can get. Of course it's toxic as heck, but hopefully it will become easier for couples to break up if they don't work well together. Though given how Japan is becoming country of old people rapidly, I have my doubts that this change will be supported in any meaningful way by government for example.
