Thsnks a LOT scotty! You saved me hundreds, maybe thousands...depending on the honesty of the mechanic. My engine light came on, about 5 months ago....and my traction control quit, and my cruise control quit. Long story short, i tried your first recommrndation. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery. I followed your recommended time. About 8-9 minutes. Reconnected. No indicator lights. Everything working again. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

I had a check engine light go on in my 2005 VW Jetta 2.5 after it had about 5000 miles on it. They fixed it twice. It's still on at 391,000 miles, and still runs great, so I guess I'm not goint to worry about it anymore.

It's only the local market that makes them expensive. In Germany/France, they are everywhere, and used as Taxi cabs, and hence, every mechanic knows how to work on them and parts are everywhere. And hence, they are MORE affordable to own than non local products.

I have a 2007 Honda Accord v6 and for about 2 years the check engine light occasionally and randomly flashes at extended idle but always goes away upon revving the engine and driving . Have had two different mechanics work on it and change ignition coils, plugs, reset the computer, yet it still occasionally happens. Yet other than that the car runs just fine. The last mechanic to check it out finally just said it could be a dirty sensor somewhere, a loose wire, or a glitch in the computer. He said don't worry about it unless and until the check engine light flashes while you're actually driving.

The majority of the check engine light problems are the EVAP system. There must be about fifty parts of the EVAP system the shop can swap out, costing you each time, and each time, there will be a different code, which means they can swap out another part, and on the way home, or the next day, the CEL comes back on and they swap out another part! Two months later, you have spent several hundred dollars and the check engine light is still on! It's difficult to test the parts, since they done away with the vacuum operated parts, because that was too easy to test! The EVAP is the greatest boom for auto shops ever devised!

Perfect suggestion! That's what I did. No unnecessary codes for minor issues, no silly sensors breaking, no limp mode from ECU glitches, no idle relearn bullshit, no reset codes to enter after disconnecting the battery! I truly miss 1990s technology when cars were actually built to be maintained and fixed instead of being purposely designed to fail, so manufacturers can rip customers off for profit, what a shame!

Moms Subaru has that light on. It was checked and found to either be a bad O2 sensor on one of the catalytic converters or the converter is truly bad. One is a $25 fix, the other is over $500. It has NOT hurt the car, in any way, driving it with that light on. In fact, it has not even touched the gas mileage the car gets. Just another example of not needing to worry about it.

Meanwhile here in 2024 the engine management warning light on my 2015 Astra J has just come on amber. Discovered that the problem was that I had done up the petrol cap too tightly. Two clicks appears to be more than tight enough it would appear. Last year the engine management came on amber again. That time it was a worn out seal on the petrol cap. Cured by replacing the petrol cap & seal on that occasion. Please check the simple stuff before panicking! Good Vid Scotty.

The thing that kinda worries me is, my car feels soooo different in winter if i don't allow it to warm up. It's way more sluggish and even the steering response is different (it does not come back to center as readily). This is in Toronto Canada and this seems to be more noticeable when temps fall to -20C (-4F) or thereabouts.

The other source, is a badly closed or worn gas tank cap - if it leaks air into the tank (the tank is pulled by vac to the carbon filter for EPA), then that will trip the check engine light.

If you don’t have scan tool, disconnect the battery to clear the codes and the engine light will go off. I have done this a few times and the engine light does not come back on because it was false alarm. However, if you have real problem, the light will come back on. Where I live, you can’t pass the annual emissions test if the light is on for emissions reasons. So, the light is a big deal and you can’t just drive around with it on for years.

ABS was adapted from technology developed for airplane brakes to prevent skidding under braking when the plane lands. It was implemented in the car industry because the vast majority of drivers, apart from those with lots of specialist training and experience, mash the brake pedal hard and continuously when they have to make a sudden emergency stop. Everyone who has ever driven a car has done this. Without ABS this usually results in an uncontrollable skid as the steering is ineffective when the wheels are locked up and the car is sliding. ABS was applied to cars because the natural instincts of drivers to stomp on the pedal and not let up were getting themselves and others killed. ABS is the single most important and effective advancement in car safety EVER.

I have a 2017 truck that is out of warranty. The check engine light came on, so I took it to a local shop to have it looked at. They charged me $75 diagnosis fee and told me there are no codes coming up and I'd have to take it to the dealership. None too happy about that. I took it to the dealer and they want $140 to do a diagnosis. I asked what happens if they didn't find anything. The dealership told me there are codes on vehicles that only dealerships can see and they should be able to find something, but if they don't, it's still $140 for their time. I told them to stuff it. I can clear the code for free at home.

i know this is off topic but i find ABS to be dangerous in some conditions. On icy slick roads ABS will cause more accidents than save as it take 3 times normal distance to get stoped. Because it detects the slipery condition and auto disengages brakes and you cant stop or in some cases even slow down.

I had an issue with a code P0302 (cylinder 2 misfire). The code was erased but the check engine light turned on again. I turned it off realizing that it was probably something that it was something different (like fueling the car). The code turned on again and it was time to change the gas cap. So far no problems with it after months of driving - but it felt that the old gas cap was not tightening up correctly which caused some air to get in.

Replace or clean the oxygen sensors at the exhaust lines. Most of the check engine light need to be considered oxygen sensor and MAF/MAP sensor also. If ignore the oxygen sensor and MAF/MAP sensor the car fuel consumption will be increased due to improper fuel and air mixture ratio.

I have a half lit abs light. Real dim and playful.Turns dimly on after stopping, goes out after taking off. Manual tranny shaft moving, playing with sensor to ground. Maybe they should add a manual transmission light to the check engine light and the ABS light.. and blink it with the seatbelt light during key on with the check gauges light. I like flashing lights. lots of lights smashing my face off. Meanwhile.. onto 400k miles.

I love Scotty's channel and been watching it for years but I disagree with his advice about waiting on a check engine light. While the car drives fine with the light and waiting doesn't usually create any damage, I think thats poor car care advice. If you have a check engine light, figure out what it is and get it fixed. If you don't have a mechanic that can figure it out and fix it in one visit, use a different mechanic. A good mechanic can always figure it out. And the ones commenting about your wallets? Give me a break. If you own a car, you need to keep up maintenance on it. I am tired of hearing people that have issues with their cars but keep driving them until they break. Cars are not supposed to be disposable. Engine issues? Get it fixed. Really bad internal engine issues? Rebuild the engine. Paint bad or dent, get to a body shop and have it fixed. Seats ripped? Go to an upholstery place and get it fixed. We would all see cars in much nicer condition if we all took better care of our cars and was proactive on preventive maintenance. The way I see it, if you can't afford the maintenance, don't buy that car. There are plenty of older American cars that are easy to work on and reliable. You don't need that brand new Toyota or flashy pre-owned Mercedes. Get a car that no only is within tour budget to buy but also in your budget to maintain. Its not rocket science. And if thats really complicated, there is always the bus.

It might still be worth it to take it to your mechanic and see what they say. If you're lucky, they've seen both the beginning symptoms and the final diagnosis before, and can tell you off the bat what is likely the problem. Not always the case, but might get it fixed faster, and avoid the potential of serious damage being done to the car.

Unfortunately, living in the NE, one needs FWD. And they put magnesium chloride pre-deicer on the bridges and high roads. Which ravages: calipers, lines, suspension perches, etc. So finding a good older car here isn't practical. And a older car which doesn't have all the zinc galvanization won't last long, either My friend just replaced his 20 yr/o F-150 because it's rusted out beyond repair. He just got the new F-150 with 325 bhp V-6 Turbo. He loves it. But, we both talked about how many expensive issues turbo chargers have....Let alone the 20+ control modules in the damn thing...

Ignoring a check engine light isn't always advisable. Get it scanned for free at an auto store and Google the code. If you live with a constant check engine light how will you know when new, more serious problems arise? FYI a flashing check engine light indicates either a misfire or some other emissions critical failure. Maybe it's me, but I like my car enough not to drive it around with something wrong indicated by the check engine light or MIL.

90% of the time I have found the check engine light to be a check emissions light. My daily constantly throws a code about having a bad evap system, but I really can't be bothered to spend the money on it. Occasionally it'll give me something useful when I'm trying to troubleshoot why my car isn't working right, but more often then not it's only there when I don't need it with codes that don't matter.

when i read this i immediately was like the Timing Chain needs replaced or checked and so do the camshaft and crank gears because that would lead to engine noise if the camshaft timing is thrown off overtime due to a loose Timing chain it throws off the cam and crank and will lead to engine knocking because the conflicted timing of the cam and piston/cylinder.

people are always quick to sell a vehicle when they dont know how to fix the engine... and the thing is people get ride of nice, expensive vehicles traumatically less because of this issue everyday. because their Motto is that its cheaper to buy another vehicle then fix the one they have.... and mechanics love this, because they make so much off of people with a fixed mind state like this. Psychology Aspect.

Hey Scotty, Have you or can you possibly do a video about when to fix and when to move on? I think that could help a lot of people who don't know much about vehicles. Like some things that sound serious like a head gasket and how to decide to repair or junk the car? If you did this video could you link me? I can't seem to locate something of the likes in your uploads. Thanks.

Yep, I have a sensor on my gas cap. If it's not on right the check engine light comes on. Now there was a serious problem I had & the check engine light was flashing mad. Sure enough it was a back fire. 😫 & It cost a pretty penny.

Mine came on while coming home and the car started misfiring, it would accelerate erratically but managed to get me home. Plugged in my $30 scanner, googled the code, turned out one of my ignition coils had died. took a trip down to autozone, $60 , and another google search to find out the firing order, problem fixed. I have almost 0 car experience, just basic tune ups, but managed to do that on my own with google.

The CEL light will only illuminate solid for emissions related issues that are most likely MINOR. If it is FLASHING at you do not drive the vehicle as it is probably severely misfiring and will ruin your catalytic converters

Intermittent problems are electrical problems. Most intermittent electrical problems are loose connections or for those who live where there is rock salt or ocean water or flood damage lol you'll probably find oxidized connections. There are also burnt wires and loose ground wire connections. Why does all this matter? because when the check engine light is on the car reverts to open loop operation which hurts drivability emissions and efficiency. In fact since the car is program to run rich and open loop mode it will probably follow the plugs sooner leaving you stranded at some point when you get a random or multi-cylinder misfire because the plugs have filed sooner than they have worn out. My advice is make everything work correctly. This is not cheap or easy. I guess you wouldn't do this if you have a beater car. But to me no car should be a beater car. Up to you I guess

The ABS system is there for a reason, don't just disable it! Also, have you heard of mandatory emissions inspections that you will not able to pass with a check engine light regardless of reason?
@scottykilmer

not here in Texas. ABS lights do not keep them from passing, thank God. But, in Germany and England, yes, you pay through the nose if any light is on to get your sticker. Let's hope that Euro nonsense won't ever come to Texas.

What happens when 4 or 5 check lights appear but there is no problem. Example I had a warning that the steering wheel was locked. It was not. And the brake light was on.. brakes were repaired at dealership and work fine. Why do they come on?? Can I drive it? FYI, just had in in for a yearly diagnostic and it passed. We moved, so can't take it back... as it is a 6 hour drive. Afraid to drive it. VW passat ...ten years old

Hello Scotty I've been listening and watching your videos for quite some time. So I have a situation going on with my 03 camry, I changed out the catalytic converter, to solve my latest issue. Now I have a check engine light, so I took it to autozone to get a reading, but their scan tool gives an error message, unable to load any ideas, why I'm having this issue, I also disconnected the negative cable and it turned right back on

all that may be true Scotty but when u live in a state that u need to pass emissions like good ole NH. you are not allowed to have any check engine codes on not are u allowed to clear the codes and run right to the inspection station to have the state computer read the car. it will know if its been cleared recently.

@AlainHubert
@AlainHubert 7 лет назад
In other words, wait until the problem becomes serious enough, and risk causing permanent damage to the engine, until you decide to have a look at it ? Not to mention risking getting stranded on the side of the road somewhere because the engine has finally failed after numerous warnings. It's never a good idea to hide your head in the sand and hope the problem will go away. Yes, minor codes can usually be safely erased without much concern. But ones that keep coming back certainly have to be looked at, especially ones that deal with internal engine parts or sensors. Spending a little money upfront can often save a lot in big repairs down the road. Scotty is like those doctors that tell you to take two aspirins a day for your pain, and call them back in a few months if don't feel any better. Then, you'll probably have to have an operation instead of just proper medication...
@dantheautoman3821

I'm a master technician. And as such, a check engine light will only illuminate for issues related to emissions. All engine drivability issues effect emissions but many emission issues won't effect drive ability. The check engine light being on steady is harmless so long as the vehicle is running smooth. If the light is flashing, or on steady bit with drivability issues ( watch your gauges) then you most likely have an actual issue. As far as ruining the engine, driving with the light on won't hurt the engine without other issues like a misfire, or overheat. All things the driver should notice. The inherent problem is accountability. No body wants to put down the cell phone long enough to know what their car is supposed to run like on a good day and ignore when things stand out. Temperature light/ gauge is far more critical yet some how people always comment (it was only hot for a second) with engine failure. Most people only notice an overheat when the a/c cuts out,
@AlainHubert
@AlainHubert 7 лет назад
Let me quote you: "...a check engine light will only illuminate for issues related to emissions." That is the most utterly absurd thing that I've read in a long time. A crankshaft position sensor, camshaft position sensor, oil pressure sensor, knock sensor, misfire sensor, MAF sensor, MAP sensor and many others in an engine, can all illuminate the "check engine" light if the ECU has detected a problem with anyone of them. And if ignored for too long, some of those problems can cause serious damage to an engine eventually. But I'm not a "master technician", simply an industrial mechanic millwright which deals with all kinds of sophisticated machinery, and can recognize bullshit when I read it.
@fuckjewtube69
@fuckjewtube69 7 лет назад
AlainHubert Youre being an idiot. All those things you mentioned are related to emissions... Stick to fixing machinery.
@dantheautoman3821
@dantheautoman3821 7 лет назад
Ok lets be clear. A misfire sensor doesn't exist...and the other components you listed all have an effect on emissions. Map sensor and Maf sensors are your primary input for major fuel trim. Knock sensors detect detonation which causes partial combustion and increased Nox. I strongly recommend that you take a class or two on engine performance specifically, and engine repair to supplement. I also service industrial and specialized equipment. From lawn mowers to fire trucks and genie lifts. Stick to your trade as engine performance is a specialty of mine.
@dantheautoman3821
@dantheautoman3821 7 лет назад
Crank sensors is the input for ignition timing....again effecting emissions. OIl pressure sensor is monitored primarily for modern variable valve timing systems again for emissions and efficiency. I'll even go further, the engine light will illuminate for a missing or stuck thermostat....why? because it increases warm up time which extends the warm up fuel trim enrichment effecting emissions. Don't be one of those keyboard warriors who takes a little knowledge on a subject and pretends to have a mastery comprehension on a subject when insulting a specialized professional. =)

Do you fix cars or just disable features? In my line of work I fix cars and make them work as intended. Can it be expensive? Yes, but that's part of owning a vehicle. Safety of yourself and others on the road depends on vehicles working as they were intended... Some things aren't worth being cheap over, your car is one of them.
