Check in With Elephant Bull, Fishan & Carer Owen 

In the depths of our grief over Phabeni, I nearly forgot about the success of HERD and Adine saving Fishan. His injury could have led to losing him but the treatment and therapy told a different story. This magnificent bull, while not 100%, is alive and well thanks to the efforts of doctors, Adine and the Carers. Thank you everyone for helping Fishan.

Dear old Fish, every elephant in this herd , young and old are etched in our hearts.

Adine, it’s Red Light Therapy that’s very much utilized now in USA for healing and increasing blood flow snd circulation post surgeries, like total knee and hip replacements, etc. also used to decrease facial wrinkles! It’s also very effective for arthritis which Fishsn surely will have post fracture as well as aging. No clue if/how it can penetrate that tough elephant skin but definitely worth looking into. It’s a warm, not hot sensation and it would be wonderful if possible in some form for Fishan or any other injuries with the herd. I worry about his pressure ulcer becoming systemic and more problematic than the fracture. I’m an ICU nurse so anything medical among the animals fascinates me, as well as troubles me. Warm packs around his fracture in winter may be beneficial in decreasing his pain. Course how you would keep it on him at night for any length of time …….We all love your updates on the ‘children’ you have taken in , young and old. You live a blessed life living with and caring for these magnificent animals and we appreciate every moment you and the carers share them with us.

Fishan is my favorite Bull, so tall and handsome! and I love having Owen giving us the perspective of the carers who work so hard to protect our Herd!

I'll never forget a carer reading to Fishan as they worked to set Fishan's leg. He is a miracle! I love his gentle nature. He's one of my favorite ellies. Love to all from Maryland USA.

I've seen the laser therapy used on Asian elephants in Thailand at Elephant Nature Park. The vets use them there.

I just love Fishan. In so many ways, he's my favorite. He's so gentle natured. I was so relieved when his leg healed as well as could be expected.

I've seen this device at rescue places in India. I don't know about its efficacy but it's worth a try.

Oh I am so thankful for this update on Uncle Fish,my kindred spirit I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to know/see that he’s feeling like his old self,this Seuintje will forever own a very big piece of my heart. I see so many similarities between him and I with our physical disabilities he’s such an amazing elephant with his wise,kind soul and truly survivor spirit bc truthfully neither one of us should have made it through our battles yet thanks to some incredible people and medical help we’re here today and I sure am grateful for that. I wouldn’t be surprised if Fish pushed himself a little harder than his body was used to I tend to do that as well sometimes and end up dealing with the consequences of pain flare ups later so I really understand what Fish has to deal with,thank you Owen & Co. for such a nice update and for providing Fishan the best TLC in all of South Africa 🇿🇦 💚🐘🤗🩶☀️🌈

We had horses growing up in the 60s and 70s and my dad would get DMSO from our horse vet and whenever any of us had any kind of pain, he would want us to put DMSO on it. He was the only one who would use it. If he was still alive and saw Fishan, that's exactly what he would want to put on his leg. 😅 I have no idea if vets still use it on horses for pain and inflammation. I never thought about a laser machine working for an elephant but, it is an awesome idea for Fishon and it would definitely help for basically anything hat is hurting him or even to loosen his muscles so he can walk better too. It would be wonderful if I could help in paying for it but I unfortunately can’t do thet. I truly do love Fishon so very much and just don’t want anything to serious to happen to him too. I know that Wildlife SoS in India use a laser/ ultrasound type device to ally the pain of rescued working and tourist elephants. They seem to have success with this on their aging and worn out elle's. However they are Asian elephants and the physiology comparing Asian and African Elephants may be quite different. Skin thickness etc may well be different and they can also perform the procedures in their Elephant hospital in a controlled environment. I mentioned in a post in a previous video that the 6 years of extra life mighty Fishan has received due to the efforts of HERD way back in 2018 gives some small solace in regards to the loss of the little bull. Cold comfort I am sure and you all know at HERD better than any of us how hard animal conservation is especially these majestic creatures.
