“Change” and small bills are a very hard concept to understand :( she thinks you’re taking five “things” away and only giving her one “thing” back. She doesn’t understand how five bills can equal the same as one bill. So hard! Great way to start teaching!!

Yes, Usually she will start to understand this year in first grade. They usually start counting each day until the 100th day of schools and they bundle the ones to make groups of ten for counting. Riley is just very concrete right now in her concept understanding. It is very typical for children that age. Great job teaching the children!!

I know right?!?! Danielle and adam manage these girls so well. And I'm sitting here thinking just how over whelmed I would be, I have autism so that many 6 year olds running around, 2 out of three wanting to have a fit. And 2 others being really loud bubbly kids. I would struggling not to lose it. And on top of that let's throw in some foot ache and back pain.

When I was young the monthly allowance was equal to my grade (so $5 for 5th grade) and birthdays and Christmas were the only times I got toys. Now I know kids are spoiled and I’m spoiling myself with the money I earn. I truly can’t believe how I survived my childhood😂

@@ipsun1632 that’s not true. Unless the child has a really strong foundation in number sense, they will not understand the concept that a 5 is the same as 5 ones. They will learn that in first grade.

For some kids it takes longer to understand that sometimes five of 1 is the same as one of 5.. for Riley it may have looked like moma took 5 and only give 1 back.. she didn’t understand it fully, and she got mad/Sad so she probably couldn’t really listen to what thy explained

It is hard for children of first grade age to comprehend that one dollar bills can be traded for higher bills. They think in quantity not value. If you notice many times young children prefer to have, say 10 inexpensive small toys instead of one toy that is better quality for the same price. In their mind TEN is much better than just one so ten little things is much better. Blayke raising her hand at home made me smile. Her budgeting talk was cute. That is so good to teach them to save and give to others as well. Enjoy your Indepedence day celebrations!

Riley’s meltdown about her amount of money was perfectly justified. Kids don’t know the theory of conservation until around 7 years old. That means they cannot comprehend that properties of objects (mass, volume, number, etc) stay the same when they change forms.

The landfills are filled with industrial and corporate waste. Consumer waste is negligible at only 2%. So even if every resident recycled every scrap, it wouldn't make any difference. Big corporations love it when people blame each other for garbage issues when it is really them.

lol My 5 year old twins do exactly the same as Riley when it comes to money, they cant quite grasp the concept that one $5 would be the same as five $1, I have to be very careful when giving them coins that they have exactly the same type of coins or there is hell to pay.

Hopefully by then she will realize she’s not an only child and that the world doesn’t revolve around her. It’s sad, they moved her up a grade hoping she’d mature like the older kids. She just wound up becoming an even bigger brat who throws tantrums every day. Her sisters are even sick of her. I’m shocked she didn’t throw a fit when she had to put the watch back.
