My beautiful sweet black copper Maran just passed 2 weeks ago. She was only a year old. She went outside with the flock in the morning, and probably that was it. I found her two hours later. She laid 2-3 dark eggs per week. She was so sweet, and was great with people and her flock mates. I loved that girl.
I'm sorry Amazing how a person can become so attached to a chicken. My little Bantam named Betty, hurt her leg a while ago. I was so upset and worried to death. I totally understand.
I have one. She lays about 7 a week. They are very dark chocolate. She is a new layer. She has been laying only 3 months. She even laid 2 eggs in one day. She is the boss hen of 8 girls. I love my Black Copper Marans.
If I was you I'd make sure she has her own chicks! You might get another hen that lays many eggs as well. It would be sad to lose such good Gene's when she goes.
I am hatching my own this month! My kids can not wait! I hope I get a good layer! You could do the same with her eggs! My little incubator only cast 40pounds on Ebay and hatches 12 at a time!
I have a couple of teenagers in my flock I'm building. I thought a rooster and hen. Not so sure, maybe 2 hens. The one I thought was cockeral is not growing very roostery. Small comb, hen like colors and tail. My RI Red (same age) is looking good, getting big. 😃
Poultry Australia agrees with the narrator and lists marans as only laying 2-3 or so eggs a week. I wonder if others have marans that lay more too. Would be wonderful.
When do they usually start laying ? My leghorns started at 18-19 weeks and my cuckoo marks started laying at 20-21 weeks. But my black copper and Easter egg layer haven’t lay yet.
I have some midnight sexlink marans, supposedly the egg production is a little lighter in color due to the cuckoo maran in them but the production is better, super sweet birds so far
I'm new to chickens, I don't know what breed I got, Google search first told me Australorp, but the more I look at the chicks, they look like these black copper marans. We have one my kids named pinky that looks like the little black one with the white chest you kept putting up, with the horn colored beak
Good luck starting out with your new flock. tips, chickens are curious and can get into trouble, and easy pickings for more animals than you think. I'm keeping eye on a neighbors flock and have dealt with a blacksnake. It took 4 babies, a young rooster, and almost another almost full grown rooster before I finally caught it. A large skunk, dug under and got 4 youngsters. I haven't seen it in a minute, but am watching for it.
