Friendly reminder of the day. Its not that Odysseus _wanted_ to sacrifice his men, its just that he was _willing_ to. Important distinction.

Btw in the odyssey odysseus wasn’t made to chose, he was the only one spared because he didn’t participate in killing and eating the cows, the crew did it behind his back despite the fact they were warned by odysseus

Scylla is insanely powerful. There is no fighting her for Odyseus' men at this point. Even POSEIDON doesn't want to take her on. It was either six sacrifices OR ALL of them died

An important line not enough people pick up on is "What if I'm the one who killed you every I caved to guilt." This line is directly acknowledging something important to his character. The guilt he has over killing the infant and the guilt for Poletes death deeply impacted his state of mind. He has been riddled with guilt because of those things and it has been a driving factor as to why he's made some of the dumber decisions. Those two deaths made him question if being a cold hearted, warrior of the mind was really what he wanted to be, but in doing so they also made him too soft to do what was necessary going forward. If he had the steel to kill the cyclops after he they were free he wouldn't have inquired the wrath of posiden. If he had been more firm with his crews they wouldn't have ever dared to open the wind bag. But as a counter his openness is what gave him and his men safety from Circe. Unfortunately Odyseuss can't say being ruthless doesn't outway the open arm tactics.

Another reason why I like Neal's more is not only the expressions, but because I love the detail of Eury not fighting back, he was preeching "If you want the power you must carry on the blame" in Mutiny to turn back to Odysseus the moment he f*cked up, so I see it as him understanding where Oddyseus is coming from and accepting that blame, Oddyseus would rather not choose but ended up being force to choose because Eurylichus ignored his warning about the cows in the first place and well, he and everyone knew deep down what he would choose. Oddyseus sacrifice 6 men, but he didn't want to do it, he expreses hoplesness when the siren was telling him the Liar of Scylla wa his only way and had a cost, but he was willing to do it, 6 men would die, but the rest could still get home, but Mutiny happened and finally thunder bringer. But well, I guess there is a reason The Illiad and the Odyssey are considered "Epic Tragedies" even though some considere them differnt genres

I interpreted the Penelope bit in Thunder Bringer as Odysseus reasoning to himself that anything he has to do, even this, is worth it to get to her, and that it will somehow fix him.

I once saw someone say that when Odysseus says, "what if I became the monster to everyone but us?" he is only referring to 3 people, two of whom are back in Ithica.

Real that Odysseus overcorrected from Open Arms to Ruthlessness. Like no middle ground. He saved all his men by taking a middle ground with Circe. And he learned nothing.

Well, Odysseus said he would become the monster to get home and he did. Complete ruthlessness. Towards the siren and towards his own men. Though in the underworld he justified becoming the monster, so he can get his crew home. Now it’s abundantly clear he didn’t do it for his crew. Maybe it was a justification, but he betrayed everyone just to see his wife and son again. Just like he said in Just a Man.

To pass through Scylla's Lair is a cost. A cost that has to be paid or the rest die. A sacrifice for safe passage. The other choice is the Charybdis who was another sea monster. One they couldn't bargain with, one which came with 2 outcomes. You either sink or don't. Odysseus had already began to return to his mindset as a Warrior of The Mind shown in "Different Beast". So he did as Athena told him to. To set his emotions aside. He chose the option where he and his men had the best chances of survival regardless of the cost. It's just REALLY bad timing on Eurylochus' part to confess when he was making a decision of who he had to sacrifice. One thing to keep in mind is that not only is Eurylochus his second in command but his brother-in-law. So hearing that someone he's meant to trust in, who's all but blood betray him by opening the Wind bag had hurt Odysseus more than you can imagine, especially when they were within view of Ithaca. P.S Even Poseidon doesn't dare to enter Scylla's lair. That's the type of threat she is.

I also personally like the first Thunder Bringer animatic more than this one- Both the design of Zeus and the fact that they were actually on the ship lol Plus I felt that the ending was more impactful than this one But it's still very good! I do love that Zeus uses his lightning more in this one
