What exactly makes these worth over a thousand dollars? I'm trying to see exactly why these have that high price tag? My 10 dollar 3 flame torch lighter from eBay and has the cigar hole punch in the bottom too looks wayyy better then these lighters and works better then these and costs 10 dollars lol. Is the price so high just because it has the Dupont name etched in it? And it's just an ego thing that rich people enjoy telling people they have a lighter that costs over a thousand dollars? Why is it over a thousand dollars to make fire lol it performs no better then your typical BIC disposable lighter....
There are 72 quality parts in a luxury brand lighter. Whilst for some it's just fire, for others it's a statement. The same statement in 3000 dollar fountain pen, the same statement in branded clothes, the same statement in luxury brand cars. You can say that for anything in life. Some people can't tell the difference between a 10 dollar bottle of wine and once that costs 100 times that much because it's not a life necessity. Different people have different lifestyles and different statements to make. They do not necessarily look down on people who do not share the same lifestyle because in the end, we're all going to end up 6 feet under the ground. But living a life of struggling compared to living a life of luxury is what some people live for. Looking at it from another perspective, it's always good to give and share what you have been blessed by in life and not keep it for yourself. If that were not the case, there will not be any charities being funded by millionnaires to aid people who have not been dealt a good card in life. I have about 100 luxury lighters because I'm a collector and dealer in rarer models. Some of which are from the 1920's and between 50 to 100 years old. They are priceless, valuable and prestigious. They have been proven through the test of time and still look the same they looked 50 years ago. (This model in the video is from 1982) I have serviced it myself about 5 times to replace O-rings and seals and I keep it close to my heart because t was the first luxury brand I bought for about 100 dollars in 1982. Costing about 600 dollars today in it's condition sure held it's price.
Such a lighter is for sure not a necessity. You can light your cigar, cigarette or whatever as well with a disposable lighter. But with a S.T. Dupont is is much more fun. For yourself, not for others. These lighters are also not made for being shown off. At least I don't know anyone who does that with his lighter. I myself don't do it. It is just for my own pleasure and even if I would stop smoking I would keep these lighters because it is just a pleasure to look at them, to touch them and to play around with them. Not necessary at all but still a pleasure.
New they are well over $1000, at least for a line 2, like in the video, but its like with anything, you can buy the cheapest thing you can get that will work, and it will do the thing, but you will be buying it over and over, or you can get something reliable that will last a really long time if not the rest of your life, "buy once cry once" as they say in the tool trades.. Refills of one of these is .05c if you buy butane in bulk and a bic holds 5ml for reference so one of these holds a bit more and a bic can last months.
