That first tiel was surprisingly peaceful when you lifted them, shows major trust if you can touch their babies without a hard bite.

So jealous of your aviary it's huge! I can't wait until mines that big 😊 the cardboard boxes are a great idea I didn't think about using them. Were your birds handtame when placed in the aviary or are they just used to being handled? Mine are aviary bred birds so I would be bitten if I picked mine up 🙈 lol I just tap my boxes and that shoos them normally
@BjornLefevre
@BjornLefevre 7 лет назад
Hah, I like the size of my aviary too. Only problem is selecting the birds to sell... Can't keep them all or it would become to crowded in there! My birds weren't handtame at all. I've been bitten once or twice, but I'm a calm person by nature, guess they feel that ;-)
@BjornLefevre
@BjornLefevre 7 лет назад
also, @bubbler891 when using cardboard boxes, make sure to put some extra pieces of cardboard in the bottom of the box or strenghten the boxes in another manner, you don't want your eggs/chicks to fall out!
@bubbler891
@bubbler891 7 лет назад
Thanks that's a great tip! God it must be a nightmare when your catching them! I know it's hard because I find it hard in my small aviary! I'll be doing a video today when I check on my nest boxes I should have at least 1 chick by now 😊

Just a tip from personal experience. try not to scare or forcefully remove a broody cockatiel from the nest. They may not feel safe going back in there.

Very cute, I didn't realise Cockatiel had so many eggs! How many times do they typically breed in a year?
@BjornLefevre
@BjornLefevre 7 лет назад
An Evil Stripper for me I limit them to 2 nests a year. Then I remove the brooding boxes. I'm from Belgium, so the weather isn't that nice, I believe they'd go for a third nest in summer/late spring if I let them. But I don't since breeding asks a lot from a bird. They might breed the year round if weather conditions permit it, although I wouldn't recommend doing that!

@BjornLefevre
@BjornLefevre 7 лет назад
A great deal has to do with what species you want to breed. But in general - some species want a couple rather than what I'm about to suggest - most birds go well for breeding in an aviary with 3 females for 1 male. Also, make sure that you have AT LEAST one more nesting spot (be it nestboxes or nests) than you have potential couples ! - this means that one mail could potentially go with all 3 females you provide for him so as a general rule: all your females +1. More can't hurt, but don't overdo it, you have to check the nestboxes! For food you can give whatever fits your species. If you keep different species together, always provide more food for the less dominant species. (as in the birds that get least oportunity to feed). Provide fresh food on a daily basis! I remove the remaining amount of food daily and use that to feed my chickens with. To keep track of who's actually breeding you need lots of time to watch your aviary and see what's going on, or - like I do - install a camera and studie the footage you have there. Maybe you don't need this last piece of advice, but when you want to put rings on your birds, what I find easiest to do is to number the nestboxes and provide an amount of rings equal to the chicks I am expecting. (f.i. nestbox 1 would get rings from 01 - 10, nestbox 2 would get ring n°'s 11-20 and so on) Lastly I want to incourage you to make a strong selection out of all the chicks you want to keep. This method of breeding is asking for trouble if you don't select the birds to keep. Inbreeding should be avoided as much as possible. Good luck!

My cocateil has laid six eggs 17 days back.Though the birds are incubating the eggs, yet the eggs are not hatching.Please advice.
@BjornLefevre
@BjornLefevre 3 года назад
The hatching can take up to 18 days. Also the incubating does not always start at the same day the first egg was produced. You are working with nature here, so be patient. It is also possible that the eggs are not fertile. In any case wait AT LEAST till 21 days after the first egg has been produced / incubating has been observed. We are talking about nature here and nature tends to set the rules, not follow them! I hope they hatch soon!! Good luck!

bob bro we have approx. 40-42° temp here in summer will cocktails survive in this temperature ? give some tips for breeding cocktails ?
@BjornLefevre
@BjornLefevre 7 лет назад
Is that celcius or farenheit? (I hope Celcius) It is rather hot, but they should manage, provide daily baths and fresh water on a daily basis and you should be ok! For breeding... You could keep them as couples or do as I do and let them live all together in the aviary. If you do the latter, be sure you know where you can sell your chicks. Don't want to keep them all to prevent inbreeding!
@domenicosacca1573

hi, they are cute.I have a question:its been 11 days since my cockatiels first mating, they have good food and water and are always in the nest box, but there isn't any eggs. I can see that my female is larger in the stomach (egg) but why haven't they been layed. is this a good time frame
@BjornLefevre
@BjornLefevre 6 лет назад
As long as the weather is good and they have +11 hours of daylight breeding conditions are optimal. I'd advise to wait it out. But if you are pretty sure she has an egg inside her and can't lay it she needs medical attention ASAP (provided you don't want to lose her and a veterinarian is an option)

Hi My cocokatail laying eggs but not sitting on eggs to incubate do u have any tips to make then to incubate eggs. Thanks
@BjornLefevre
@BjornLefevre 5 лет назад
The first time a couple breeds this can happen. If you have other couples you could devide the eggs amongst them. If not I'm afraid the eggs are lost unless you have a machine to keep them incubated. (And want to raise the chicks by hand) If you do give the couple some faken eggs. If they start keeping the eggs warm themselves you can switch them again.
