Using a Lionel CDV-700 Geiger Counter to check the china cabinet for radioactivity
Uranium glass is radioactive, however the radioactive levels are so low that even with a whole cabinet full of it there isn't enough there to be anywhere near dangerous. If I recall, a single airplane flight at normal cruising altitudes exposes you to more radiation than what this kind of collection emits.

I put 2 eggs in my u-glass pie pan and they're done in 9 minutes! Thanks for going the extra mile and showing us the geiger counter first hand. I love your UV cabinet I suppose I half to do that myself now. 😄 - Grandaddy-o

Most of the radiation given off by Uranium glass is alpha which I don't think your Geiger counter detects, I have a few pieces that emit around 200 cpm which still isn't that dangerous.

I'd eat and drink off uranium glass any day and everyday! We all have to die of something. Lol.

I know this is a year old video but what black lights do you use for your case?

And what about the radon gas uranium releases as it decays
@ansonhastings
@ansonhastings 2 года назад
In poking around the internet I haven't found any specifics on dangerous levels of radon gas being generated from uranium in glass (not saying that radon isn't generated), but this is an older house with *plenty* of air drafts, so there shouldn't be any buildup of radon. I also don't have a basement for radon to settle in.

what flashlight have you used?

Nothing fancy, it's actually one of the pet urine detection lights from Walmart. There are much better choices out there, this was just the most convenient option.

Anson! That is terrible! Those old survey meters are notoriously insensitive. So anything that actually registers is MANY times worse than background. The noisy glass really should be avoided. But I suppose you have something more docile for eating your Fruitloops out of.

Oh, I would expect it to be fairly unreliable at this point, it was more for the novelty of seeing the old survey meter run again. :) The dishes in the cabinet are for display only and never get used for food. I've got a nice set of Corelle plates and bowls with the leaded paint for eating on. :D

But this Is radioactive and dangerous
@lainey6474
@lainey6474 3 года назад
It’s barely above background radiation, and background radiation doesn’t include the things that stuff you commonly do that has great amounts of radiation. For example, if you’ve flown in an airplane, you’ve gotten 5 times the radiation you would get from an ordinary x-ray. So to put in perspective, if background radiation here is at 1 millisevert, then the radiation glass is maybe 1.5 mSV. A chest X-ray is .1 mSV, a banana can be up to 2 mSV, 40 mSV from flying in an airplane.. it takes 400,000 mSV to even develop symptoms of radiation sickness. TL;DR. Uranium glass isn’t as dangerous as flying and eating bananas.

@@lainey6474 I found a video where someone holds a geiger counter to bananas and to uranium glass, it's in this video at 1:05 : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OLdDKb9Bago.html His measured background radiation is 0.11 µSV and holding the geiger counter near a bunch of bananas doesn't change it. When he held it against uranium glass it immediately jumped to 2.5µSV

@@barte6128 I stand corrected! Thanks for showing me this! :)
@lainey6474
@lainey6474 2 года назад
@@barte6128 however, I do still think that having uranium glass in a cabinet for display purposes isn’t very dangerous.

You're the type of guy that trys to convince everyone you know what your talking about but when people walk away from you after you explain something to them they secretly call you dumbass to the person they are with or to themselves because what you said was Bs and they most likely know mare than you.

Why are there no videos checking the glass for alpha radiation?
@hiddensquid335
@hiddensquid335 11 месяцев назад
Because you don’t have to worry about it if there is just about anything between you and the glassware. I believe the beta particles would be the most to worry about
