During underwater archaeological research of the submerged Neolithic site of Soline, near the island of Korčula in Croatia, a road 4 meters wide and 7,000 years old was discovered, along with the remains of larger stone architecture within the site, clearly defined by a shoreline wall. An excellently preserved dry-stone wall was identified, and at the point where the road enters the settlement, a widening is visible. This suggests that there were two elevated circular structures at the entrance to the settlement, originally reinforced with wooden pilings driven into the ground.
The research also uncovered several olive pits and numerous almond shells. Radiocarbon analyses were conducted directly on the olive pit and almond shell, indicating an approximate age of 6,900 years. Almost 7,000 years ago, almond cultivation was evident in this area, while olives were most likely imported through trade from the eastern Mediterranean. These are currently the oldest traces of olives found in the Adriatic.
