@@yibbo0 when I said the government I didn’t mean it was directly the government. By the government I meant that the council have to obey by the government that’s over agriculture like the department of agriculture. Sure the council is below the government that’s for sure but they have to obey by whatever rules the government have set in place and make sure that people comply with them. Some rules are important but some rules from the government/council are stupid. It’s just annoying because a lot of rules are not clear to a lot of farmers and farmers only know about them when the council/department of agriculture send out letters informing people that they have breached rules/regulations.
@@yibbo0 nah fuck the council, selfish twats. the cafe would bring additional revenue not only to the farmers who are already getting screwed over, but revenue to the community as well.
Farming is crazy. Jeremy was used to "I'm going to drive this car from point X to Y", the only thing he had to basically care about was if he had the correct driving licence, visa and passport. The laws and regulations he had to pay attention to could be placed on a small pamphlet with pictures. The laws around farming and foodstuffs is a bible by comparison.
It’s not even bad news the guy literally just speaks facts never seen someone spit so much cold hard truth and he’s knowledgeable af about his craft gotta respect it
But what they won't say in the video that Neonictinoids are banned because of their lethality to pollinating insects; which are required on the farm. Instead of bashing the EU; attack the forestry industry and trade standards that failed to biosecurity the UK by preventing the spread of non-native pests.
That part almost made me cry. A whole field just "dead"... Imagine if you spend all that time with preparing the field, plowing, planting, the money to buy seed and fertilizer, everything just to hear "Sorry, the field is dead..." All of that time and money WASTED, down the drain. You would have actually, literally and unironically been better off economically if you had spent all that time just sitting on your ass and drinking beer.
It’s a shame they never go into *why* the rules exist. In this case it’s because the pesticide they talked about was found to also kill off the bee population. Without bees, whole swaths of agriculture become unviable. The rule may have been punishing to Clarkson in this case, but it’s there to protect all farms and farmers from a much biggest cost than a single failed field.
You can see that Clarkson really cares about the farm. He was speechless and genuinely upset by the fact the beetles destroyed a field. It wasn't just for the show.
@@imeverywhere9633 Sure, Clarkson doesn't know anything about farming, which results in a lot of mistakes and bad decisions that have a big impact. He also loves to blame regulations for things he did wrong.
Minister of Finance & Logistics, Mr. Charles Ireland. 😆 He is definitely part of what makes this show so good. When he comes round to the farm, it's like 'Dad' showed up.
Charlie is the kind of person who just either has experience, some awareness or knows someone who can help about the "thing you are doing/seeking". A role model Englishman.
I just love Charlie Ireland so much. His competence, knowledge, patience, practicality, and work ethic are all very admirable. Plus he's just an adorable person. There's a detectable warmth and innocence to him that I can't quite explain.
About the fertilizer near hay. Hay can ignite due to anaerobic bacteria. 2 You do not want to recreate the explosion of Beirut harbor in rural England by igniting several tons of explosives (That happens to be fertilizer as well). Some rules look bureaucratic and stupid but exist for a reason
This is a great compilation, but its missing my favourite, the one where Charlie tells Clarkson about the issue with the farm shop's gate. That said, thanks for the upload, its a great show!
Fertilizer was the favourite bomb making ingredient for the IRA, ANFO, Ammonium Nitrate and Fuel Oil( Diesel) and he´s not worried out it, admittedly is is hard to use or ignite without an explosive booster but the docks blast in Beirut was caused by fertilizer exploding! Not to be underestimated. Great seies though.
It takes at least half a stick of dynamite minimum to get it to go but preferably 2 sticks I think. My uncle was in mining in another state then got an explosives license later. The thing is, hay CAN EASILY spontaneous combust particularly if it hasn't completely dried yet. And you wouldn't want to be burning chemical fertiliser. Probably a bit toxic.
Charlie peaked in Season 2 when the council tried to illegally screw them over and it was the first time you see him get angry. "NO, THEY CANT DO THAT"
I know its comedy but I think this is a wonderful metaphor so very well done regarding the precariousness of our existence in this "modern" age of plastic wrapped everything.
A note on the hay bales with the fertilizer, hat bales will definitely catch fire on their own, especially if they are stored in a damp location or are damp when they are bailed.
When I first heard about it I thought "No way." I thought "Well they will catch fire if you leave them out and some daft idiot is smoking around them." Then it turns out "No, this is a more serious fire hazard in damp conditions because mold, it's actually safer to smoke around gasoline barrels because the gasoline is safely stored within a metal barrel. The hay isn't!"
I've worked out why farmers are being given such a hard time by governments, their officials and local councils world wide. They've been lobbied by some very rich, influential people who have decided that if they can stop farming, buy up the land & build on it they'll make tons of money and become even richer. Governments go along with them because politicians are mainly rich people anyway and can't stand ordinary people anyway. The short sightedness of this is astounding. We need to support our farmers across the world. If they go so will we. Governments already have the opinion we're only good for making things that make their lives comfortable. They'll think up an excuse for war to cull numbers so a few million people dying from starvation won't bother them. We need to fight back and support our farmers. Go Jeremy
Just started season 3 and I'm surprised Charlie doesn't pull out and open a bottle of scotch everytime he sits down with Jeremy to either hear his latest scheme or give him bad news.
Charlie is exemplifying what a farmer has to go through; I guessing that this is all over the world; Look at France same issue; The US..not far behind;
Hay/straw does spontaneously combust, especially when it is stacked whilst damp and no channels re left to allow air to move through the stack. Seen it many times.
Most agricultural fertilizer contains high amounts of ammonium nitrate - AKA the stuff that caused the 2020 Beirut port explosion. So the EU are strict as fuck when it comes to storing it. If stored near hay, which releases gas as it decomposes, it can literally spontaneously combust if that gas mixes with it.
1:05 Listening to that clip, as someone who knows their chemistry (and history), just hearing that they were stored together in the first place is horrifying
Yup, add enough heat and a bit of moisture and it can become a big bonfire. Now add fertilizer and you first have a bonfire potentially resulting in an explosion.
I suspect it's the other way around. Don't store it near combusrable materials since fertilizer fires are extremely dangerous. Couple years back you had the Beirut harbor explosion as an example of it.
It’s a good rule, stops farmers sterilising the countryside. Intensive farming is incredibly destructive to wildlife. It’s been unchecked for so long, big efforts are now being made to not kill all the wildlife. It’s not a hard concept to grasp🙄
Yer the dumb one for failing to see why it's bad spraying the soil and plants with hazardous chemicals. There are ways to combat flea beetles without endangering nature and humanity, some farmers are just too greedy, lazy or dumb to implement those.
