Brings back memories of my childhood. My grandparents to use to watch this show every night after sending us kids to bed. I remember hearing the theme song from down the hall and would listen to it as I fell asleep.
I remember around the time the show ended in 1993 they did reruns around dinner time and my grandma used to have it on TV, my grandparents used to own a little deli/mini mart with a little TV and it would be on. I just remember the ending credits.
15 years old Watching this in my bedroom on a school night with what i thought at the time were real worries . . . I never had anything to worry about they were the best years of my life.
“Making your way in the world today.. TAKES EVERYTHING YOU’VE GOT! Taking a break from all your worries.. SURE WOULD HELP A LOT! Wouldn’t you like to get away… where everybody knows your name.. Where everybody…” Damn man, Simon’s backstory hits hard.
i still get a little emotional when i hear this song. it speaks to basic needs that are the same for all people: the desire to be accepted, loved, and appreciated. i'll always love the show and the song.
God, I grew up with this show. 'Seeing' it again in Adventure Time really hit home and made me cry. So many memories. What a great show, and intro. ;~;
waittt how is this comment 10 years old unedited and mentioning how it was in adventure time?? unless there was an adventure time episode w it too that i dont remember and not just in fionna and cake
+RossOriginals I seem to recall listening to the extended version and then wanting to pretend I never heard it. hehe. I don't remember specifically what was said but I remember not caring for it. :-/
I'm from Russia and I'm among the handful of Russian people who ever watched that show, especially in English without translation. I remember it used to be aired here in 90s but it was always showed at 2 AM when most of the people were sleeping, so it has never succeeded here like Friends or Big Bang Theory, that's why I had to download all seasons from piratebay later to watch it entirely. Because of the memories about this show every time I visit any bar I always expect that in several seconds Norm will enter in and everyone will explode in joy with "NORM!!!", unfortunately that never happens, but I never loose my hope :)
@@craignelson9045 Now we must hate Russia, right? The talking picture box told me that Russia is bad and Ukraine is good. The mainstream media, 90% of which is owned by 6 corporations, told me so.
Same here! I'm the fan in Japan, but I'm the only person who's watched every single episode in this small island nation. F.R.I.E.N.D.S and Big Bang Theory are more like international shows which you can enjoy or be entertained even if your native language is not English. On the other hand, Cheers is mostly loved domestically in their home country since most of the jokes are from complexed idiomatical expressions that non-native speakers find it hard to understand. But, once we have figured out this formula, it'd be much more entertaining and addictive. Maybe, these are the reasons Cheers is not perceived very well outside the US compare to other famous sitcoms.
makes me wanna cry listening to this.....reminds me of how many people are gone out my life and how thankful I am to be able to post this comment on this day! blessings to all!!!
My mom said when I was a little kid, every time this song would come on when the show came on, that I would drop what I was doing and start dancing to this song. I couldn't help it, this song just brings me immense joy, still to this day at almost 35 years old!
BrownBrother27 Yep. The guy named Brandon Tarikoff who was responsoble foe Cheers, 227, cosby, Golden girls and A Different World were the shows that revived NBC in the 80s.
The A-Team, Knight Rider, Riptide, Hunter, Miami Vice, The Golden Girls, Hill Street Blues, Family Ties and Saturday Night Live also kept NBC alive and rescued them from failure in the 1980s. As far as comedy goes, NBC would have been unpopular if they had rejected Cheers!
True. But Fraiser hit on the changing times, it was a seamless transition from the 80's to the 90's with cheers and Fraiser. The other actors andactresses successes were directly tied to cheers. Kristy, Long, Norm, Nelson they were mega stars. Cheers was for rising talent in the 80s what mash was for those in the 70's. Saddly after cheers there was never again a true analogue of it. No one show afterwards gave rise to the level of talent Cheers did.
What a beautiful song! I sure hope it doesnt have any tramautic implications for a man who was forced to spend thousands of years under the influence of a magical artifact that grants the user immortality at the price of their own sanity and sense of self
For many, it was characters like Norm, Frasier & Lilith that brought you here. And more recently, it was characters like Simon, Marceline & Fionna. Regardless of how you were introduced to this gem of a song, I think it’s pretty neat that it holds so much importance in two entirely different shows-decades apart!
That's Jim McDuggansly, famous drunken Irishman from New York. He holds the 1896 NYC record for most pints of Guinness consumed in a single night (and still being alive next day).
The song just relaxes me. Just for a moment I feel like I'm a kid again. The long version of this song is nice, but the way it was edited for tv is perfect. Thumbs up to the person that edited it.
I love reading some of these comments! Literally took the words out my mouth. Ever since the show has been released on Hulu, I would literally only play the first episode just to hear the song. This is probably the most nostalgic song in history after seeing these comments! Someone said it makes them happy and sad at the same time! EXACTLY!!! It literally brings me back to my childhood years. Hearing this theme song come on at night, back when family was everything. Back when love was real. My dad is longer here , he passed away from cancer. But Everytime I hear this song, it's like being Ina time machine, 7yrsld on the couch begging to stay up a little bit later so I can hang with my dad and watch tv. Mannn, they tell you how fast life is and to appreciate your youth. But when you're young all you wanna do is grow up and be free from restrictions lol Damn, look what a song can do.. Literally getting chill's thinking about all this nostalgia. Much love to all! ~1 love~ ❤️😁
Beautiful comment. This was my bedtime show as a kid, too, 5-6yo...sometimes I'd go to bed right after the intro song, sometimes I'd stay up and watch with them. They'd turn off the lights and we'd watch in the dark. I loved the song so much, even if I couldn't understand most of the comedy.
I never watched this show as a kid but saw these opening credits every day that signaled the end of the preschool age kid shows airing on that channel. Understanding these lyrics as an adult, I can see why this show is a classic. Today more than ever, I think we all need to take a break from the Internet and find a place like this to go once in a while.
I was watching an episode where Simon sings it and my parents walked in while I was watching Adventure time and they were like "Why is the Cheers theme song playing?"
Used to watch this and Hill street blues with my big brother, miss him and our nights watching tv. Would give anything to be that kid again. Go and listen to Hill Street blues too.
This lovely theme song touches the heart as it expresses a hidden desire that many of us didn't realize (or want to admit) that we have... It lightly touches that hidden sadness but, brings such joy to hear. I loved this song even as a young child. The lyrics, instrumentals and vocalist , together, create a song that's timeless. I love it!!!❤❤❤
When I was a kid I knew it was bedtime when this show came on. Yet I always knew the intro song because my dad would stay up and watch it. Now that I'm an adult I thought about the show and just finished the series on Netflix. It's an amazing, talented, and very well made show.
how old were you? I was 4 when the series ended but I remember the late afternoon reruns somewhere around that time. For me, the end of Jeopardy! signaled bedtime haha. God I wish I could've been an adult in the 80s.
It's a good theme song but it sent me into a slight depression whenever I heard it as a kid. It's got a bit of the melancholy about it, especially when combined with those old photo stills
I know what you mean. I remember hearing this as a kid and it made me sad.. I was only about 7 yrs old but I was already wanting to go back to a simpler time.. if that makes any sense..
+Rish Fish Classic comedy...you guys missed ALOT!. I was in Boston many years ago at this no name bar and sitting across from me was a guy who reminded me so much of Cliff Claven I swore they based the character on him
+D. Belle Oh, seriously watch it. One of the best written sitcoms of all time, that's not a hyperbole. I was a kid when the show was on it's original run, so the jokes went right over my head. As an adult I watched the re-runs, and was blown away. There isn't a sitcom today that can touch it.
I loved this show as a kid and if you were born in the 80's-90's generation you should feel damn proud you saw shows like this coming up that were the best!!
I remember one evening after dinner i happened to be flipping through channels and caught a glimpse of a Frasier episode. It caught my attention, started watching from the beginning then I learned that Frasier is actually a spinoff of Cheers. Then I proceeded to binge through both shows. By far my 2 favorite sitcoms
I just want a place like this. Somewhere where I can be my own person. Where I can leave family problems, work, etc. at the door and just relax and truly be myself. I still haven't found a spot like that and at this point never will. But watching reruns of Cheers and even Frasier give me that little bit of a glimmer of happiness and for that I am eternally grateful
Still get goosebumps when I hear the theme tune from "Cheers" .. Friday nights at my gran n papas after collecting the paper money .. Chinese food, Cheers, Golden girls then Roseanne ., them were the days them were ❤️
I remember when I was a little kid in the early 90s I was in my room At night time this song was on the television I heard it from my room It took me to another place a special place in my heart
I remember I would always fall asleep to this song. My father would always watch it right around the time I would drift off to bed as a little kid. This song actually brings a comfort feeling.
When this show was on the air back during my teenage years in the 80's I thought it was okay but it was not one of my favorite shows. For some reason when I listen to the intro now it gives me chills and I think its the best theme song ever written. I'm not sure why it affects me that way now but I suppose the song takes me back to a better time in my life so many years ago. .
We just went to the Cheers bar in Boston, and I stood on the corner and recorded a brief video clip that matched the very beginning of the Cheers theme from the show, including cars driving by. Brought back great memories from the show. It’s a shame the inside doesn’t look like the actual bar from the show, but my wife and I shared a couple of drinks, I got a Cheers mug and T-shirt while I was there.
This is one of my favorite shows. Kirstie Alley was definitely a great actress in this show. She may be gone but the acting in shows and movies she left behind will be in fans’ hearts forever, myself included. She’s now with some of the shows members in Heaven R.I.P😔😇🙏❤️💐
One of the best theme tunes of all time. Amazing memories of being a kid, i used to ask my parents if i could stay up a little longer just for the theme tune.
Here's a known facts about the opening credits: John Ratzenberger's picture is called "Saturday Night at a Saloon" by Russell Lee in Craigsville, MN Nick Colasanto's picture is the Horseshoe Saloon in Junction City, KS. The picture right after Ted Danson's and Shelley Long's picture from the 1-3 season is Rudy John's Barbershop in Junction City, KS
I remember watching reruns of this when I was 6 late night on Nick @ Nite and one picture that always struck me was the last bloke holding the beer and has that smirk on his face. It looks like he's enjoying life with his friends, with his beer, and having such a dandy time. That's always stuck with me because it used to air back in the 90s. Knowing that was how life was like in the early 1900s!!! Good memories :)
Never watched this show a day in my life, but I remember this intro from TV guide and it would wake me up late at night when I went to sleep with the TV on, this intro is so good and catchy ...
The song was perfect. Simon, a ordinary mortal, attempting to wield a powerful magical relic through sheer willpower. It showed that "making it in the world 'today' takes everything you got". As he fought, he knew he couldn't give into the crown and take "a break from all his worries". Sadly, for all his efforts, Simon was only human; he had forgotten Marcy's name as well as the final words of his song reminding us that he is drifting from his humanity "where everybody..."
When I was a kid, I watched this show in syndication after my parents went to bed at 1100pm on WPIX 11. I loved this show so much I actually moved to Boston as an adult and lived there for 9 years. Thank you gang at Cheers for inspiring a 7 year old boy to began his adult life in one of the best cities in the world!! Cheers!!!
Growing up in the 80s I can say I loved the look of the dude at 0:53 The Smug look he have with his tuxedo and bowler hat slightly tilted while holding up his glass of brandy
Reminds me of the good old days before moving out of state. My cousin and I would go to Cattlemens restaurant and we could eat in the bar. We did this for over 30 years. Lots of ribs, ribeyes, filet mignon’s, Prime rib, seafood & salad. We ate like Kings. When we came through the Bar entry door, Bartender would start making our drinks as he already knew what they were. I would be the responsible one, never had a DUI or reason for one. Just great times with all the waitresses and good food . Every time I hear this cheers song, it reminds me. 🍽🍻☕️☺️
The reason for that is that Fionna Campbell takes places in Simon's subconsciousnes. In Simon's real life (in Ooo) Cheers is the only sitcom he has available in his 20th Century Human Zoo.
This is one of the very few (or the only one?) tv series intros where you don't see the main stars' faces at all. Great intro. Always secretly wanted to know more about that beautiful blond young lady just before the title covers her.
