Cheese Country Trail UTV Ride - Part 1 [Polaris General 4 1000] Southwest Wisconsin

We recently spent two days on the Cheese Country Trail with our Polaris General 4 1000 - a 47 mile off-road trail that meanders across three counties in Southwest Wisconsin - connecting Mineral Point, Darlington, Monroe and Belmont, as well as other small communities along the way.
The trail follows an old railroad bed, so it is relatively flat and not technically challenging, but offers beautiful views along the way as it wanders over streams and through the rolling hills of the Dritfless Region of Southwest Wisconsin.
In this video, we trailered our Polaris General 1000 4 seater down to South Wayne, WI then traveled the trail up to Darlington for lunch at Annies. After lunch we explored some road routes and hit a small section of true off-road trail in Lafayette County, then jumped back on the trail and made our way down to Monroe, before turning around to finish the day in South Wayne.

We bought our UTV in august of 23 and now have 1200 ish miles on it and almost every mile has been on this trail or around Monroe on road routes for errands and what not. Your video shines a good light on this trail and doesn't focus on the two downsides everyone else does, that it's dusty and rather flat. Other than those 2 things it's got a whole lot going for it and for me especially the trail is about a mile from my house on the south west side of Monroe. I just found your page tonight and have watched a ton of your videos already and we're already talking about doing your route to lake superior!

I saw your channel on Instagram so of course I had to check out this video. We have a Polaris General and ride as often as we can. We are planning to be out in the midwest next summer and I will put this trail on my list. I think the SxS is the best way to see the countryside so I don't mind that the trails aren't hill climbers and such. I will like for pt2 as well.

I thought these trails were so cool when I first rode them 15-20 years ago (I didn't know of any others at the time). I now live in Northeast WI (Florence County) and I could never go back to riding the railroad beds of the CC trails. I highly recommend anyone reading or watching this check out the trails in Northern WI. World class ATV and Snowmobile trails up here.

Yeah - it’s all we have in Southern Wisconsin. The scenery is nice but the trail itself is rather flat and often dusty. We’ve had some great riding up north! Pembine / Dunbar is the closest we’ve been to Florence County but we’re hoping to make it up there this summer!

@The Northwoods Family cool. I moved right outside of goodman wi last year from the Milwaukee area. Was granted permanent WFH after covid. I started buying 4 wheelers before we bought this house once my employer approved. I can ride my ATVs to my dentist in goodman or take it to the local country store. And the trails are spectacular year round. It's so cool!

I went ATVing there yesterday. The next time you are in Darlington for lunch, give Legend's Bar a try, fantastic food. I've never seen the entrance to the "off the beaten trails". Where bouts are they located?

Where is the off-road portion of the trail? I’ve ridden this trail a lot and never knew about that part of it.

It’s actually not connected, sorry that didn’t come out clearly, it is a separate trail section. The section is northeast of Darlington about four miles. From the west it runs from the 90 degree bend in Furnace Hill Road, jogs at Hirsbrunner Rd, again at F and ends in Fayette. It’s only about four miles long but it’s a cool little section. FYI I think that off road section is closed and May be closed permanently unfortunately (don’t quote me on it). On the trail map the off-road section is marked by a special dotted line and you have to take small paved roads to get there.

Yes! Check out Part 2 of this video - there is a really nice campground smack dab in the middle of Darlington right on the river. There is another campground in Gratiot right on the trail as well. A lot of the county roads in the area are ATV routes too so there might be some others that you could ride directly too as well.

Not in Southern Wisconsin. Next closest are Black River Falls area. Great trails but on the south end they can get pretty badly washboarded when it gets busy.

Just curious, where in or near South Dakota do you recommend going on a family utv trip where I can rent a utv and stay in a hotel/motel? I’m looking for good scenery, not so much extreme difficult trails. Thanks! I’m enjoying your black hills video series as well.
