For those who are so adamant that the dish here is NOT Larb, cut the guy some slack. After checking some sources, your right it's not authentic, BUT it does use several of the key ingredients found in authentic Laotian/Thai Larb. The point of this video is the ActiFry not the cuisine. He is trying to demonstrate that it is good for more than French Fries/Chips which would make it an expensive one trick pony. Clearly if you were all about authenticity you would not be using the ActFry. The point is the ease and convenience of the device. As for the use of a metal spoon, the interior is the more durable ceramic and what does he care, the pan's not his anyway. For the pronunciation critic who claims he is saying "ActiveFry", the V is labial/dental sound and would be very difficult to distinguish, and I don't hear it. I have no relationship with this guy but the internet pile-on of negativity and criticism is unnecessary.
+Initial D the thing about Thai's, is that if food is not cooked by a Thai, it isn't Thai. So if a Thai was making a big mac, it would be Thai Big Mac. If a white person made that Big Mac, well, then, it wouldn't be Thai.
I like that the man keeps it simple. Hosts on other clips are always trying sell these gadgets as the ultimate answer. The chef here does it quick, concise & manages to show viewer a simple item that can be cooked with the little machine. I didn't remember him saying at any time this was absolute anything or represent it as authentic anything, try to lighten up folks. Thanks for a good video chef, I just subscribed.
Thats not larb, and I have a Acti-Fry. Having said that I've done what he done there. It really good with leftovers, throw some leftover meat in. Then vegies after 10 mins, and some stir fry sauce in. 10 more mins its ready & tastes great.
I'd be tempted to run with just the meat in it with some spices to brown it a bit to get the Meyer reaction going, then dump in the vegetables. Perhaps the meatball cycle for the meat followed by the wok or international cycle for after the veggies have been added or just add more time to the previous cycle and there's always just using the french fries cycle for everything.
Wow - thanks for posting this. I love Chef Ming and watch his show whenever I see it on the listings. I had no idea that the Actifry did this. I thought it was just for french fries. I will have to look into getting one now. Thanks again!
Sorry, was this actifry family size or the original size? It looked you used quite a lot of stuff. I just bought one in the gourmet edition. Only did some fries. Amazing!
Looks like a pointless waste of money that machine! What’s so hard about getting the ingredients and shoving it in a normal frying pan and just stirring it now and then? They will invent anything to take people’s money lol!
Can you make typical Asian food like fish and chicken that are mixed with potato or corn starch then usually fried then mixed with sauce ? Is it possible to get the same texture fried with this instead of oil ? Also can we make pizza quiche bread etc ?
3:23 "Talk about easy". Sorry but, talk about the shape and color of your food. it's garbage... All that juicy meat lost.... Those machine are great, i use them. But not this way. This guy don't know cook. DONT COOK STEAK. Only chicken, fish, sausage or fried chicken.
“See how great that looks?” No, it does not, it looks disgusting. I guarantee this Asian heritage guy would never dream of eating that. Not anything like larb. When I saw this idea I was excited as I have a old model of this machine. So, no, it’s really only useful for small chips like patatas bravas.
I'm surprised you even know what Larb is (assuming you knew what larb is prior to this video) I love Larb and i never use silly products to make them. All you need is a wok and a huge bowl to mix it in.
I've been in love with Thai food since my first experience in 1969. I make a very acceptable larb myself - as you point out, it's so easy and delicious. I can't imagine what Ming Tsai thought he was doing "making" larb in a machine!
I dont't very understand when he speack ( I'm french ) Can somebody write me the recipe please ( I understand onions, beef, peppers, carotts, and ... ??? ) By advance thank you
Hello there, i know it's been 8 years but how was this product. I just happen to stumble upon this video, and seen your message from 8 years ago haha, how time flies huh?
sorry to be off topic but does anyone know of a tool to log back into an instagram account? I somehow forgot my password. I love any assistance you can offer me
@Roberto Kai Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and im in the hacking process now. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
I love lab gai, but somehow I get the feeling this device isn't gonna help compared to a normal frying pan. Unless you're in thailand and your apartment lacks a normal kitchen as is common there...
Dear Chef Ming Tsai, There is absolutely no excuse for not doing your research on larb especially since you consider yourself a chef. Larb is a traditional Lao dish as it was invented in the country Laos by the Lao people. Thailand was simply influenced by Lao cuisine since Thailand is next to Laos. Larb is the national dish of Laos.
What happened to you Ming? That may an interesting concoction but it's about as removed from larb as I can imagine. And you were once my favorite television chef. And I can make larb in about 10 minutes - real larb.
it really doesnt matter what the recipe is you could still make larb with the correct ingredients and seasonings in the actifry. you dont have to follow tfal recipes to use the product. its the concept that is the point in my opinion.
Except that it would take less than half the time to make it correctly. I'm not talking about that - I'm talking about a once fascinating chef stooping this low - making something and calling it larb when it bears absolutely no resemblance to larb (or laab). I'm just saying that Ming, with his overdone and phony enthusiasm should know better - and probably does. I guess he needs the money.
You don't need to buy the ActiFry to make this. I make it in my wok . You don't need a wok, a frying pan will do. Imagine all the cleaning up if you use this ActiFry. Waste of money.
wtf is he saying "if you want it vegetarian replace the meat with soya sauce"??!!!! It dont work like that! And also could you explain how you mix white and brown rice together when they have different cooking times.
It's classier to change a brand name to avoid getting sued. :D Teflon wasn't happy about Tefal arriving in the U.S. so they filed a threat to sue that the name Tefal was too similar to their name, Teflon. Hence, Tefal is known as T-Fal in the US only.
i seen this video 3 years ago but i went for a breville halogen instead.. now i have an actifry, i noticed the maximum line but this video looks well over with no problem and shall look forward to some experimenting
Looks absolutely horrible if you called it larb, it should look fresh, raw and citrusy. ActiFry may be good for lots of things but larb is definitely not one of those.
Ming - you are destroying what little reputation you have left by making a complete fool of yourself. Whatever T-fal paid you to do this ridiculous series can never be enough for you to save face. Shame on you.
The eternal Actifry vs Airfryer debate. I bought the latter and I'm very happy with it but I only have to cook for one; if I had to cook for an entire family, the Airfry simply wouldn't do.
looks more like chinese stirfry rather than larb! I'm thai and larb requires no oil! The meat is broiled and you mix it with spring onions, shallots and parsley(also some crushed rice tossed in the pan for while) simple as that! You don't need fancy tools for this type of dish LOL why would u pick Larb dude!
Actually fries are good (not all brand of frosty ones...just a few ones like mc cains) but hen you try to cook meatballs or nuggets or so it will be a big mess du to the unstoable rotatipn of the plastic blade inside.when you coock something that's notbfrench fries the food will constantly tuch under th rotating plastic blade and the it can even go ino the holes where the hot air come out from!!!
