Nepalese chef Khadag Bista, was working in New Zealand when he had a car accident in 2018, which left him with a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Doctors feared he had no chance of recovery. But, after 22 days in a coma, Khadag woke up. He then spent eight months at the Laura Fergusson Brain Injury Trust (LFBIT), learning to eat, speak and to walk again. Today, Khadag walks with the aid of a brace on his left leg and a walker for support; and his speech is still difficult to understand. But Khadag is a stubborn and determined character who walks 3-10 kilometres every day as part of his rehab. One of the highlights of Khadag’s week is working as a chef at Can Do Catering, a social enterprise run by the LFBIT, which hires people who have brain injuries. It is a great creative outlet for this top chef and has been integral to his recovery. Khadag says, “As long as I am in the kitchen, my heart is feeling happy”.
