What is chemical etching?
Chemical etching is a manufacturing process that uses chemical etchants to machine precision components from sheet metals. It offers a cost-effective alternative to stamping, laser and water jet cutting.
How does chemical etching work?
The chemical etching process steps are as follows:
1. Choosing your material: Almost any metal can undergo photochemical etching - even those that are traditionally hard to machine.
2. Pre-clean: The metal is chemically cleaned to remove debris, waxes and rolling oils.
3. Lamination: An ultraviolet light-sensitive photoresist is applied to the metal.
4. Printing: Ultraviolet light passes through a phototool mask of the component design, transferring it to the photoresist.
5. Developing: The photoresist is selectively removed to expose the metal.
6. Etching: Chemical etchant is sprayed onto the sheet, dissolving the exposed metal.
7. Stripping: The remaining photoresist is removed to reveal the final etched component.
