On my behalf I would suggest u ...While writing negative singn with the rate of rectant, it would be better to say that rate can never be negative but due to higher initial conc of reactant it becomes negative which is not acceptable.Therefore, in order to make rate positive mathematically, we need to add negative sign with rectant. Note down this negative is not due to final conc minus initial conc. Rate is either zero or positive but never be negative.

We say, instantaneous rate tell us about the conc. Of reactant or product at a specific time(We use the word, 'specific time') then while writing its equation we write 'dt' saying it is a small change. Isn't it contradicting our first line of explanation?
