Wonderful refresher videos. You're informative, articulate, and entertaining. A rare combination! Suggestion: a video on free radical chemistry. It's a hot topic and it's got some weirdness about it (e.g. singlet oxygen) that you could help clarify.

cows contributing to "climate change" but monocropping nutrient devoid grains doesn't?? carbon footprint is independently way higher whilst having 1/100th the nutrient value. you just parroted propaganda bud. how you guna treat metabolic syndrome with a high glycemic nutrient devoid food, that contributes to gut permeability via gluten & gliaden?? if we ate low carb paleo we would have far less medical waste, further bolstering my point. but hey, actually scientific dietary guideline wouldn't make big pharma & agra money would it.

I got very confused with the "oxidation states"- if atoms lose electrons and then become oxidized, shouldn't all oxidation states be "+"? Why is oxygen -minus- two? Is this just something we have to memorize or is there a reason behind it? If ionic bonds means an atom is "donating" electrons to another atom...shouldn't the oxidation state of every atom be + "number of bonds needed to fill valence shell"? I'm almost there, but this is breaking my head :)

Left us in the dark with the number coding on the elements..why ppl got confused, how and why hydrogen=+1 and oxygen=-2 and so on was not explained. These are great videos and explanations, first time I got lost haha
@Penguinprof
@Penguinprof 4 года назад
I know that's a bit confusing. Basically, the oxidation state, which can be +, - or zero, is the hypothetical charge that an atom would have if all bonds to atoms of different elements were 100% ionic (that is, with no covalent component.) This is never exactly true for real bonds, so even the fine print has fine print. This topic needs it's own video (it's on the list). Thanks for your feedback!

This is The First of your Videos that i didn't like ! i would like to see more animations of cartoon atoms in these molecules attaching to & falling from other groups, & why they're doing that ? Why would some atoms just fall off & others jump on ?
@Penguinprof
@Penguinprof 4 года назад
Thanks for the feedback. You are basically asking why chemical reactions occur, so it might be helpful to research the five basic types of chemical reactions (combination, decomposition, single-replacement, double-replacement, and combustion). Analyzing the reactants and products of any reaction will allow you to place it into one of these categories - keep in mind that some reactions will fit into more than one category. I hope that helps!

Many reliable sites say that oxidation does not always relate to oxygen. "Oxidation doesn't necessarily involve oxygen! Originally, the term was used when oxygen caused electron loss in a reaction. The modern definition is more general." -ThoughtCo. To what extent is this true?
@Penguinprof
@Penguinprof 4 года назад
You are correct - remember, oxidation can be the addition of oxygen AND/ OR the removal of hydrogen, while reduction can be the removal of oxygen AND / OR the addition of hydrogen.
