My Grandmother's home was requisitioned by the Nazi's in Le Becquet to observe the port of Cherbourg. My mother and Uncle spent D Day in Sainte Mere Eglise, 1st village liberated.

I visited Cherbourg in January 2010. Its a quaint town along the coast. I remember seeing the machine gun pill boxes on the hill overlooking the harbor. Its an easy day trip from Paris by train from gare Saint Lazare.

Wow I saw my grandpa among the German PoW's. I'm so lucky. He never told anything about the war. After this he came to Morocco and then he worked in Maryland USA before he came back.

Seems so little is known about the move on Cherbourg, such a critical capture early in the d-day campaign.

It would have been critical if the port hadn't been utterly demolished.

What I find strange about this film is that it is early summer yet everybody is wearing a coat or a jacket or at least long sleeves. I don't know the average temperature is there but you would think that this part of France would be warm or at least I would. I looked it up and the average June temperature is in the low 60's fahrenheit.

Did anyone know from what divison are soldiers at 1:32. That patch is unknown to me.

I think it has to be the shoulder sleeve insignia of VII Corps. The divisions that took Cherbourg were all from VII Corps.

It’s probably just a signal corps patch or something for showing off for the cameras, the real fighters were moving out to fight elsewhere..

@@LaVictoireEstLaVie Bei Cherbourg weiß ich nur. Als er aus einem Bunker trat. Er war am D-Day noch Flakschütze in Cherbourg auf so einer vorgelagerten Festung vom Hafen, die wohl heute auch noch existiert. Und dann musste er eben in den nächsten Tagen als Infanterist bei Cherbourg gegen die Amerikaner kämpfen. Dann kam er ins Camp Atterbury nach Indiana.
