Cheriyal painted masks are used for decorative purposes in interiors of houses, commercial spaces and exhibitions, etc. Sometimes these masks are also used as toys for entertainment purposes. As the traditional Cheriyal painting lasts more than a hundred years, painters prepared smaller scrolls and most importantly Cheriyal Painted Masks were made which represented the characters from traditional scrolls such as tiger, cow, and a few neutral characters. These masks were prepared to entertain children and also to decorate homes. Mask making involves the steps like Scraping and sanding of coconut shell, Preparing tamarind seed and sawdust paste, Applying tamarind seed and sawdust paste to the mask and shaping it, Covering it with khadi cloth, and applying a coat of white mud and tree gum mixture and ainting the mask.
