On my way from Kyiv to Sofia in July this year i stayed there for one day. I was surprised! What a little charming city. The ethnical mix of residents was interesting. Finally it is the capital of a historical area called Bukowina which includes areas not only in Romania and Ukraine.

I was there in 2019, it was a cozy town and I liked it. I prefer Lviv though, mainly because I don't understand Ukrainian, and in Lviv, it was easier to find people who spoke Russian and English. Both places are worth a visit though, and I was traveling from Chisinau to Lviv so it was on the way toward Lviv.

I used to live in Chernivtsi for 4 months after the start of the war. I have been living most of my life in Kherson, and compared to it, I felt like I got into another world :D I haven't known we had cities like that. Kherson also have many wonderful sight things and beautiful pre-revolutionary architecture, but I'm used to the fact, that major part of our cities are full of concrete blocks where people live and unrestored old buildings. And then I've seen Chernivtsi and was like: "DAMN" :D

Chernivtsi existed before Romania was a thing. Romanian troops controlled Chernivtsi since late 1918 till early 1940 and then under joint occupation with German army from mid 1941 till early 1944, which gives us the total of 25 full years of full or partial Romanian control. It's been longer in Independent Ukraine - 32 full years now. Not to mention Holy Roman/Austrian/Austria-Hungary Empire - 140 years, not to mention Ottoman Empire. There was a period before Ottomans and after Ruthenia, when Chernivtsi were a part of Moldova. But it's not Romania lol. So stop your coping please.

I lived in Ukraine for several years, after I first went there in 2012. I lived in several places while there and visited around 9 cities in Ukraine, but I never got to visit Chernivtsi. Obviously, I'd heard as well as read about Chernivtsi, and I also have a Ukrainian friend here in England who I've known for about 5 years who is originally from Chernivtsi. However, I never visited, as it always seemed out of the way, being in its unique geographical position in Ukraine. I am sure it's a very beautiful city, but it's clearly smaller than Lviv and much smaller than Prague. I would definitely like to eventually visit Chernivtsi after the war is over. But in terms of beauty, there are many beautiful cities in Ukraine. Kyiv has many beautiful parts, so do Odessa, Lviv and many other cities in Ukraine. It's interesting though how you pointed out that Chernivtsi was one of the few cities that wasn't devastated during WW2. Because, as I understand it, the Chernivtsi Oblast, is the only region in the whole of Ukraine, that hasn't been attacked by Russian missile strikes or drone attacks in the current war that is going on. Again, this must be partly to do with Chernivtsi's geographical location. I watch your videos regularly, as I love the part of the world that you are in. You and Angela, take care and thanks for the video footage that you provide for us. Slava Ukraini!

The two secret of this city are probably these: 1. Built by the Austro-Hungarian Empire, as Bukovina was part of the direct Austrian rule (so the finance was in safe hands, mean less corruprion). This era finished after WW1. 2. The biggest jewish community there in the whole Monarchy boosted the economy of the city. Sadly this also finished after the WW2. Ukraine inherited these two diamonds (together with Lviv) as a gift from a culture, they originally do nothing...
@wyqtor
@wyqtor Год назад
More like 'stolen' courtesy of Stalin. And if you think the Austro-Hungarian Empire wasn't corrupt, you've got to be kidding. Basically everyone who wasn't Austrian, German, or Hungarian was a 2nd class citizen, with limited to no rights. Under Romanian rule, Cernăuți prospered and had almost equal Romanian-Ukrainian populations. Only afterwards did the Ukrainians and Russians ethnically cleanse everyone else, in the name of communism, perhaps.

This city belongs to Ukraine only since 1945, until then it was majority romanian part of Romania. Before that ist also belonged to the Habsburg Empire, but still majority romanian. It has little to do with Ukraine, that can be seen in the architecture which is very different from the typical ukrainian city. Even today all the territories south of Chernivitsi up to the romanian border is majority romanian.

Cernăuți was a 50% Romanian, 50% Ukrainian city, part of Romania. It was stolen by the Soviet Union, first in 1940 by the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact before WWII, then again in 1944 as the Axis was losing the war. We gave it up completely in 1993 in exchange for a border treaty with Ukraine, which ultimately allowed us to get into NATO and avoid Ukraine's fate, as Russia wouldn't dare to invade a NATO country. A painful, but ultimately smart course of action.
