In ancient times, the game of stickball was played as a way to settle disputes without going to war. Today, the game is still played by Cherokee communities as a fun activity for all ages.
Join Cherokee artist Stan Paden as he shows how he makes the sticks used in the game - demonstrating the traditional way he learned as well as the modern methods he developed as an effort to preserve a piece of Cherokee heritage.

Great video. It recalled an old story I heard as a teen when I climbed Blood Mountain here in Georgia. A great victory over the Creeks was accomplished at Slaughter Gap and Mountain before the time of the white people. The story I heard was that the battle took place over a stick ball game. The old story is that the Cherokees had brought the ball which was made a little too big for the sticks the Creeks had but, it fit the Cherokee sticks just fine. So when the Creeks lost the game, a big fight broke out. The slaughter was so great that the creeks and ponds of Blood Mountain turned red with blood. As an aside my father in law was from Seminole, OK and named his grand son Stand Watie, no relation. He said that when the Cherokees liked someone they often gave thenm the person's name. We have a lot of Bobby Lees down here.
