i tell you..Cherrelle is STILL that CHIC....day to date...true story....i love that woman! Great role model & ive loved her my entire life..love all of her music....true story!!! thanks for sharing this very rare video!!!
I miss Video Soul too. It was a good show. 15 years on BET June 1981-September fall 1996. Good music and videos. I also miss the old Bet when they were showing videos 1980-2006. Now,BET changed with rerun sitcoms, movies, reality shows, game show
That album dropped at the wrong time , it was 1991 and R and B the NEW Jack SWINg was the bomb !! She is not the only singer that got ate up and spit out .. Freddie Jackson and a lot of singers watched as they made powerful albums that under sold ..
...exactly...i still listen to the whole album and I think that artistically, it was her best work, just that it didn't translate to commercial success...
Yes , yes it was very clever , broad and artistic .. She had wanted to make serious grown woman album and she did just that . I tell you that title song "The Woman I am" just grows on you as time goes .. You have to listen to this album intently with patience or you will miss some of it .
She released an album in '98 called 'The Right Time,' which contained a great remake of Rose Royce's "I Wanna Get Next to You." While TWIA album wasn't as big as its predecessors, it wasn't only because of her not working with J&L. Tabu was on the downslide. Most acts there during the early '90s experienced limited chart success. Although the album doesn't have the same style as Cherrelle's work with J&L, both 'Tears of Joy' and 'Never in My Life' were strong songs with excellent production.
The hip hop generation has dumb-down the interviews. All these kids want to talk about is foolishness. Who is beefin with who and who is smashing who. No longer is the music business about the art and the craft of creativity.
My last Cherelle album was "Affair", so I missed the release of these albums and her career change. I love her music and her energy. Gonna check them out.
*screams* Cherrelle is my fave singer EVER!!! I'm such a fan when I watched "Saturday Love" on tv while I was in the UK at age 4 (I'm a '80s baby, so bear w/ me y'all). Thanx 4 uploading this clip.
Hi there...The only videos she made from this album were "Never in My Life" and "Tears of Joy"! There was one other single release -- "Still in Love with You"; but no video was made for that one! I also dig her version of "Baby It's You"; and another favorite of mine from this album is "Nothing's Ever Gonna Stop"!
She should have stayed under the wings of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. No record she did afterwards even came close to what she had with them. Big mistake Cherrelle. When it's not broke. Don't fix it.
I totally agree with you. After two number one singles and a top twenty pop single from her Affair album with Jam and Lewis she made a bad career business move or something else we the fans don't know about has occurred because no music artist walks away from a hot winning streak collaberation, you continue to grow and prospire with it. DUMB MOVE, CHERELLE.
...I watched her Unsung episode (shared with Alexander O'Neal) and that point was brought up (about splitting with Jam & Lewis)...she was reluctant to go into details about the split...but in fairness the album was not a bad one in any form...the major problem that album had was wrong timing (i.e. should have come out a bit earlier)...the music landscape was changing (more into the new jack/hip-hop era) and the format of this project didn't fit with the time, and as such the reception was lukewarm...Never in my Life was a beautiful song...but I agree that leaving Jam and Lewis was probably a mistake...
I listened to her album about a month ago. A very nice album but could have chose better songs on the two remakes, those were not her style. The music landscape changed because we as a society allowed it to change, We allowed laws to pass where one or two people can own unlimited radio stations. Which means the vast majority of black/soul/ rand b radio stations are in the hands of people who do not look like your soul r/b music listener or buyers. Thus the people that now own the black formatted stations also own the record companies or has strong ties to these stations. The record companies are the ones that allowed sampling, the real killer of r/b soul music for it is a cheap way of producing and making records. Sampling paved the way eliminate the true writers of soul music. Being original was no longer needed. You only needed was to now piece together someone else's music. After time moves on and the years passes by you are left with what we have today after all the good has been sampled out of sampling is a total worthless mess and a music style that is now controlled and is very commercial where almost every song sounds the same. That also goes now for rap music, especially the crossovers. When a radio station can control what our young people listen to and still profit from it, then there is no distant hope for r/b and soul music to return to it's original style and sound.
My thoughts exactly....about Jimmy and Terry. Felt the same way about Janet. That control album still sounds fantastic. Imagine how great subsequent albums would have been with Jimmy and Terry!
The album will be reissued (along with bonus tracks) this year as part of Edsel Records' Tabu Reborn expanded CD series. They are re-releasing all albums by Cherrelle, Alex O'Neal, and S.O.S. Band. Cherrelle's 'Fragile' has already come out, and I am enjoying it!
This brings backs some great memories. Donnie Simpson was my inspiration to learn even more about Radio and TV. Video Soul was more than a Promoting Tool for artist. It also allowed us to see hwo real and personal Artist really are. Watching this, made me wish that Recording Artist and Broadcasters were more professional these days.
damn as a 43 year old cat who grew up watching donnie simpson doing many interviews,i wonder what happened to great interviews like this.man those were the best of times to watch classic people like this. now all we have are a bunch of thugs who rap about a bunch of bullshit & very few real r&b artists with great voices.music today along with standards, creativity, substance, & passion are gone.man i miss the 70's-90's when their was great music & great interviews like this one. old school 4ever
@computerpurple Do you know if Cherrelle had a video for "Fragile" in 84"? For years, that was always a wonder. For a new artist, Alexander O'Neal had three videos from his debut, "Innocent," "A Broken Heart Can Mend," and "If You Were Here Tonight," but none for "Whats Missing" which was a bigger hit than the three videos released.
Man I miss this! Donnie use to ask real music questions.... you can tell he would listen to the person album he would interview. He would really be into the artist as well. Today people want to dis the people they're doing the interview.
@computerpurple I know that "What's Missing" was never made into a video, but "Fragile" remains a mystery to me (not saying that a video does'nt exist, but I would like to know and see it). Chrerrelle had four videos for her High Priority lp which is the cheaply made "Saturday Love" (taken from Top of The Pops performance....booooooo!), "Artificial Heart," "You Look Good To Me," and the extremely rare "Where Do I Run To."
Deciding to work without Jam & Lewis was a trainwreck for her career. She really did nothing since. She and Alexander O'Neal could have made so many more hit duets together, and she could have still had many more hits under her belt. When the chemistry is there, don't break it. Big mistake Cherrelle. Big mistake.
Donny is wrong about Never in my Life sounding like Everything I miss at Home, It's unique in style & toned differently just like Everything I miss at Home, But no where is it Similar, Now her voice makes them seem similar but not the this Early 90's Slow Jam they both were Different & Mellowed differently Romantically, Her Feminine Passion set an Night Time Aura that felt & still feels just like the early 90's Felt with Both of these Love Tones, She drew in with Queen Prowess real Night time Kings who Desired Love & not Lust, Wanting only One & Knowing how to focus on that one Woman with Ease*
Watching these old interviews on Video Soul makes me want to shed a tear for the young folks who watch BET nowadays just to see a bunch of wannebee artists and rappers with ghost-writers on standby talk about bullshit while they gobble it up like fresh buttered popcorn from the movie theater. I'm not hatin', I'm just statin'....
Hello retrohythms. Thank you so much for taking the time to send me this video. I do appreciate it. Do you know if she made a video for the song "Gee Wiz". I love that song. Also love , love the song "Never in my Life". Oh and "Baby it's You".
I just realized you're talking about the music video! YT has a time limit of 10:00 on videos, so I couldn't fit it! But you can see it here on YT elsewhere...just do a search!
@Drpluv187 Yeah, tell me about it! I love the hood in her too (strange for a girl from Beverly Hills). Seen her in a bikini and lets say that not all 50 year old woman should be wearing a baithing suit, but Cherrelle is a true exception. Who said that she was using cocaine?! Damn these rumors hurt celebraties!
@soulchildsacomin Hello so sorry it's taken me sometime to reply. I did a through search of the web and can't even find just even the information as to if Cherrelle made a music video for the song "Fragile". What a bummer , wish she had cause it's a good song. There is as i'm sure you know already a "performance" video of her singing that fine tune. I also haven't found a music video of Alexandr O'Neal's song "What's Missing". Both these artist have a "performance video of the songs at You Tube
I wish people would NOT allow the world to dictate success as if without their acknowledgment you’re not it. Well you know that’s a lie because look at the many people you reached operating in your gift. Not operating in any of your gifts at all now that would be not cool. But we are already a success the moment GOD created us in his image.
@clarkkent502 well give a brotha a thumbz up(LOL)... i was watchin UNSUNG today & they kinda said the same thing, but remember said this a month ago(NOT TRYIN 2 BRAG)LOL... i AM a HUGE fan of CHERRELLE & MJB. I JUST MADE THE CONNECTION, BECUZZ BOTH OF THEM HAD THAT STYLE OF A SISTA GOIN OUT ON THE WEEKEND & DRESSIN THEY AZZ OFF(lmao)...
This was a great album, unfortunately it seems as though any time Jam & Lewis established artists venture on projects without them, they turn out to be a somewhat of a bust. Always loved "Never In My Life" and "Tears Of Joy" as well.
