Cherry Audio | Mercury-4 | No Talk Preview Mercury-4 is a detailed emulation of one of the best-sounding and quirkiest polyphonic synthesizers of the late 1970's, the Roland Jupiter-4. It’s the rarest and most sonically unique of the fabled Jupiter series, and we’ve gone to great lengths to recreate the subtle (and not-so-subtle) nuance and character of this beloved classic. Every aspect of Mercury-4 has been expertly modeled upon a vintage Jupiter-4 originally owned by Greg Hawkes of the legendary 80’s new wave band . So freaking awesome and almost identical! Much closer to the real things than Roland's and Expansions of their analog counterparts! If only someone could make a hardware version, make it cost effective, give it at least 2 or 4 more voices, 16 or more if digital and 61 keys. Even if it sounded like this software version I would buy it. Unfortunately, soft synths are not for me, just too much hassle, I like to flip a switch, turn a few knobs and go. Thank you for posting, such a great demo!

i'm listening to the presets of the mercury-4, dco-106, and ps-20, trying to decide which one to get, and i gotta say the arps on this thing are crazy. it's rare that arps from a non-rompler synth sound useful and inspiring to me

The Memorymode seems to be the best of all the CA plugins I've heard on YT so far. It sounds more detailed than this, but then I've never heard a JP-4 "in the wild" so I am comparing the two plugin sounds and not the two originals.
@74goldenjet
@74goldenjet 2 года назад
Nice sounding plugin, doesn't have the character and balls of my hardware jp4, really cheap and convenient for composing, and later replaced by hardware sounds. Thanks for the video :)

I've yet to hear any VST with the girth of hardware, Syntronik is close because it's sample based.
@Abruzzo333
@Abruzzo333 День назад
How can you know until you compare patches 1 for 1? I'm calling BS. People said the same nonsense about their Jupiter 6 vst and there's a video comparing the actual synth to the VST on yt and it is 99% identical. The developer modelled this from his own Jupiter 4 and it got it pretty close to the hardware.
@74goldenjet
@74goldenjet День назад
@@Abruzzo333 well, that's the thing. I did compare. It's really not the same, even if it has some similarities, like Jim Carey's face when looking like Clint Eastwood 😄 (Perhaps a bit closer than that 😉)
@Abruzzo333
@Abruzzo333 День назад
@@74goldenjet Well there's no direct comparison to the Jupiter 4 online for me to know but there is for the Mercury 6 and Jupiter 6 and it's spot on. Especially when you consider it's use in an actual track/song....where nobody would be able to tell the difference. I've seen the Cherry audio designer popping up in comments about the Jupiter 4, saying it was extremely close to the model he designed the vst from. So for you to say "it's not even close"...I'm not buying it. I've been hearing people say this same thing for years...yet there's videos of people failing blindfold tests and others which sound 99% alike to the hardware in comparison videos. Also worth mentioning that it's likely no two hardware J4's would sound alike.

Can the affects be used as a plugin on other instruments?

@derekbaker3279 2 года назад
Hi LFOVCF. My guess is that the effects contained within the Mercury -4 cannot be used with other instruments, however Cherry Audio specializes in emulations of modular synths, so there are emulations of effects, filters, VCFs, etc. that can be purchased separately from the Cherry Audio website.

I will get bashed to smithereens for saying this, but I played one of these for years in a full time band (and later the JP-6 and 8) and this doesn't even remotely have that character. If I heard this blindly I would never guessed it was a Jupiter 4 emulation. Too bad, as I miss that sound. It was very distinctive- never heard another synth that had the warm character of the Jupiter 4. Now bring on the haters.
@AC-ol9lp
@AC-ol9lp 2 года назад
I have a jupiter 4 and i think it some sounds are close but obviously doesnt have that raw grunt, fatness, warmth, and drift of a 70s synth which i think would be really hard to emulate. I think the chorus and filter sounds a bit off too plus this version has up to 16 voices which also makes it sound different. But for the price of this synth you cant go wrong.
@Cosmic-Ballz
@Cosmic-Ballz 2 года назад
The Unison mode is nowhere near as thick/harmonically complex as the real thing, and that's one my favorite things about the Jupiter 4. Also I'd need to hear more of the filter in self-oscillation to see if gets close to the real thing.
@KnzoVortex
@KnzoVortex 2 года назад
I have little doubt their are more accurate emulations of the Jupiter-4 out there that come closer to what you like about the original, as it seems to be a very popular synth. I would also bet they'd be more expensive though. Cherry Audio's synths are so great because they're so reasonably priced.
@manticore101
@manticore101 2 года назад
Well, I do not agree. I also played a JP-4 (and later Juno-60 and Jupiter-6 for years in a full time band in the eigthies. I also have recordings of me using it. When i heard the first arpeggio Tones here, I said «Yes, finally. It does indeed have the character of an original Roland Jupiter 4. I think it also crushes the myth that every vst sounds the same. All cred to CA for beeing brave and having done what other developers didn’t dare to do.

It’s got .. something. It might not faithfully emulate the JP4 but it’s fatter than most VSTs and as warm sounding as some hardware.

Really nice sound, but boring architecture, I wanna give it a second oscillator and some scary filter FM and I thought this is what I bought Voltage Modular for? So, come on, Cherry Audio, think of you well-invested customers. Release your new tech as modules for VM also. Thank you very much!

@marcusfreeweb
@marcusfreeweb 2 года назад
@@venericanone I don't know if this filter emulation will cope well with audio rate modulation. Probably not. I still hope they will open up things for modular users at some point. As they did with their other emulations, like the ARP, Korg and Oberheim. And maybe this sounds even better, more analog to my ears. Still improving their tech. So, please, some modules out of this. Did the Jupiter-4 had an external CV input for modulating the filter frequency?
@marcusfreeweb
@marcusfreeweb 2 года назад
@@venericanone FM was a thing before it was called FM. It used to be called 'crossmodulation'. The Minimoog could already 'FM' the filter or another oscillator with its OSC3, in audiorate. Nothing too fancy.
