"She loves like sleep to the freezing" hits me hard. If you're suffering from hypothermia and fall asleep, the odds are good that you won't wake up. In other words, her love is slowly killing him.
Oh wow okay I actually thought it the other way. Like when you're freezing and get in a bed to sleep is the best feeling. Thanks I didn't know that. Maybe its double sense? She is killing him, but its also comfortable? Idk maybe?
This song is so interesting and written so brilliantly...he's singing about being abused and cheated on by this woman, but he's still so drawn to her and tries to justify it. You don't often hear about men being abused by women and I think this is really eye-opening. How many men are abused by women but are too proud or too afraid to lose the woman to admit it? Such a great song, and Hozier is an amazing songwriter. Can't wait to hear more from him in the future.
What i found even more interesting was the fact that in the music video, he had a man abusing a woman too. So the gender norms were reversed again, to show that abuse is abuse regardless of the gender, and that is can be equally as enticing/traumatizing at the same time.
if you do not understand what I mean by that then you probably are shit in bed and do not know that foreplay with a woman has more to do with our other senses than touch. david beckham is a prime example of the opposite of sex in a voice. notice women agreed with the comment - so if you are into pleasing a woman perhaps you should try to learn something instead of trying to be clever! #NoPussy4You
My trick is to always do it painfully slow, way slower than you’re capable of. Then progressively go faster and faster. Then repeat the riff over and over. It’s monotonous and mundane, but it’s the only way to do it. Because you don’t have time to think when fingerpicking or else the timing is off. But trust me, when you got it, you can’t stop playing it!!!
Her eyes and words are so icy Oh but she burns Like rum on the fire Hot and fast and angry As she can be I walk my days on a wire. It looks ugly, but it's clean, Oh momma, don't fuss over me. The way she tells me I'm hers and she is mine Open hand or closed fist would be fine The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine. Calls of guilty fall on me All while she stains The sheets of some other Thrown at me so powerfully Just like she throws with the arm of her brother. But I want it, it's a crime That she's not around most of the time. The way she shows me I'm hers and she is mine Open hand or closed fist would be fine Blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine. Her fight and fury is fiery Oh but she loves Like sleep to the freezing Sweet and right and merciful I'm all but washed In the tide of her breathing. And it's worth it, it's divine And I can have this some of the time. The way she shows me I'm hers and she is mine Open hand or closed fist would be fine The blood is rare and sweet as cherry wine.
This song is actually extremely beautiful and sad. It's fairly obvious that this song is about the abuse he is suffering in a relationship, but the way that he writes it is so amazing in addressing gender roles of how he's feeling it can't truly be abuse because he's male, and It shouldn't hurt him. And the fact that he still loves her "Her fight and fury's fiery, oh but she loves like sleep to the freezing." makes it all the more tragic. Some of the lyrics are just so well written and full of so much emotion they sent me into a mini existential crisis.
+Abby Other I agree with you but I think you're reading into the gender roles part. When listening to, and even reading his lyrics, he doesn't say anything to suggest that he feels that as a man, he should not be affected by the abuse. He draws emphasis on the fact that he loves her despite the way she treats him. This is evident in the way he describes her so delicately. The way you see it as him thinking he shouldn't be hurt could just be from the bias of our view and interpretation of men being the victims in an abusive relationship. The song may lead the listener to assess the double standard of men who are abused by women but his lyrics don't explicitly address this.
***** I had to say hello ,Thoth. :) Hello. my ears are open, my head is clear, I am hearing your words, your wisdom, in my mind, saturating my heart, manifesting through my actions, they guide me, as I extract myself from the causes of suffering... Peace
@Green Space obviously very late, but three years ago, you said ... "Sounds like a familiar story, but only a tragic one when the gender roles are flipped." why is that? it's not tragic when a woman is abused? i understand that there's a lot of toxic masculinity that comes in to play when a man is physically abused by a woman, but i don't think it's a matter of being more or less tragic; it's just a different kind of tragedy.
Victim or not, he is dealing with it through the most beautiful way, art=music. Plus, if you listen to the lyrics, you'd see that she is cheating on him, "staining the sheets of another". And... "the way she shows me I'm hers and she's mine, open hand or closed fist, will be fine", clearly means that she has the upper hand. This is pure beauty, no matter what anyone says. That is what is so great about art; it is open to interpretation. Nobody shares the same perspective or hears the same song, or feels the same sunlight.
Forgive me if I'm over thinking this. But this guy has such poetic genius that he flipped the temperature in relation to the good and bad side of her. At first the icy marking her bad and the burn juxtaposing it. At the end fiery being her bad and freezing being the soothing. It just feels like more emphasis of this not just being a beaten man, but someone with straight up Stockholm.
Watching Hozier play live sessions is hypnotic. I can't take my eyes off him; the way he keeps his eyes closed most of the time, so lost in the music and the feeling of it, the way his pitches and guitar are so melodious and perfect, makes my whole self feel buzzed with happiness and peace. And the live sessions are, in my opinion, just as good or even better than the studio recordings. There's just something about hearing the raw, unchanged sound of Hozier's voice live that is completely mesmerizing.
@@jesslyn6813 -braiding his hair sounds like heaven- He looks much cleaner and I love it! But I can't choose between his longer hair or his not short but shorter hair.
I remember when this was uploaded first, chatting with the guy who filmed it with Hozier in the comments, the old dilapidated building and joking about the roof going in, wasn't known outside of Ireland then(not substantially), now look how it's all grown, seems like a flash.
Cú Chulainn No, but then again I'm not a videographer, this whole video was just an aside to a photoshoot. I've photographed him a few times since at various Irish concerts.
I recently just discovered Hozier for a little over a year now. I'm turning 23 in two days. Hozier is 33 years old, and this video is from 10 years ago. He probably recorded this song the same age as me now. If I could say something to this man when he uploaded this masterpiece is: "you've made it. you created songs that not only inspires but make people feel a little less lonely. Don't worry about being a college drop out because you've used that to become a great poet, lyricist, and musician. ohh and your guitar, you've taken good care of it. you still use it in performing and recording songs." with life full of possibilities and uncertainties. I'm just so happy you and I existed in the same timeline. I can't thank you enough for not giving up.
Really, this artist, Hozier IMO will be one of the most important of his generation. Whether he gets commercial acclaim or not. Hozier, stay true to yourself and keep writing these songs .....
he recorded his entire first album by himself, played all the instruments, wrote all the lyrics and music. Tried and true talent i must say. I can't recall a singer songwriter who has hit me as hard as he does since i first heard Jeff Buckley back in the 90's.
I still get teary eyed over Jeff Buckley when i listen to him. Such talent taken at such a young age. Hozier though has that same raw, powerful type of sound to him that he did, so maybe it will fill the void I have over jeff buckley being gone.
I'm in this very addicted to Jeff Buckley phase and started to get all sad and teary. So I started watching Hozier videos, it's quite funny to find comments like this here. They're surely very similar, I love that Hozier has that same kind of emotion.
One of the things i love about him most is the fact he can do both, he sounds amazing singing with a soft voice but he also sounds incredible when singing in his strong voice. No matter how he sings you can hear the passion and emotion in his voice
i am crying right now and i dont even know why...Hozier just evokes these emotions out of me and i have never once cried listening to a song...its just so beautiful, so simple but with so much heart that it takes my breath away
Hozier is such a great artist. Beautiful catchy melodies, nice voice but the best part is the lyrics. Oh come on the lyrics are pure sincere poetry! Well Done Sir, Ireland still gives us great music. "It's divine" !
How can something be so dark and so beautiful at the same time! So many of your songs are like this, and i can't get enough! My son though says, "Stop it! Stop liking all the artists I like!" 😂
His voice is immaculatel. He is only 24 going on 25 but has such a rich, soulful and just amazing voice mixed with Gospel, Blues, Folk and soul. His lyrics are always just gorgeous and his whole album blew me away. I don't even know how...he really is just something special I'm glad I've come across. I'm so happy I didn't stop at TMTC I mean how could you? When you heard that song you had to be thinking,"Damn, where can I find more of this from him?" I mean I know I did. Beautiful beautiful voice and just how he carries himself too! Of course he's a little awkward and shy in front if cameras but he doesn't let that from stop him from putting his message out there.
This incredible song makes you realize the kind of shallow crap music that is on the radio now days. This song is without a doubt the most inspiring thing I've heard in a long time.
Pov: You’re on an early morning walk in the woods, cardinals and finches sing in the distance as you venture deeper. As you walk, you see a stream. Trees and bushes flourish from the water. Fish swim longingly in the water, content in their home. But, something catches your eye. A large stone beside the river. A perfect spot to sit. There was a man. A man with long, brunette hair holding a guitar. He strung his music, singing a story on love and tragedy. He sings with a longing to someone. Alone. Alone he must be to sing his sorrows of love. This man, allowing himself to become vulnerable to the earth once more.
I don't know why but the first time i hear this song I cry a lot. There is something in his voice that bring me peace. I can't believe I'm going to see him in a concert. I love him.
“The way she tells me I’m hers, and she is mine. Open hand or closed fist would be fine.” His soft high note is so beautiful, nearly brings me to tears every single time
Not only is this one of the best performances I have ever heard, its also one of the best lyrical songs i have ever listened to. This song can be perceived as physical or emotional abuse but i believe it is emotional. What makes this song so great is his use of positive connotation, even if the song is negative. Hozier - you are an absolute genius.
It was 7am and we were on the roof of an abandoned hotel looking at the sun rise over the Irish Sea listening to the birds sing. Hard to be anything but relaxed.
That's not a tuner. That is a Capo and is used to raise the pitch of the guitar, so he can play in completely different keys on the same guitar versus wide open sans capo.
I was told that this man recorded this song on top of an abandoned hotel building, and I didn't even need to see this video to believe it. I was like, "of course he did"
Even if his songs are not in my mother language, it's incredibly touching. And that's what I expect from good music - to touch my heart! There's nothing better than listening this talented dreamer with quitar. And now do not disturb please, I'm gonna dream as well.
Literally been hearing this song daily for the past 4 or so years and i didn't get even slightly tired of it. Thanks hozier for this masterpiece. We highly thank you... but i want it it's a crime that she's not around most of the time..❤
It's cool that he has this amazing range and that his voice is unique to him in the way that it goes from an indie artist to almost a bluesy sound. I seriously love his voice.
