Stewart traveled long before there was a foul call. During review the refs had to see the travel and ignored it and upheld the foul. Minnesota should've won that game

Not a foul, and a travel that wasn't called when Stewart double bunny hopped before the so-called foul. The refs just stole the championship from the Lynx while the whole world was watching. Gloat all you want NY fans, the replays are there for people to watch over and over. What an embarrassment for the WNBA to screw up so bad at the end of an extraordinary series.
Watched as a neutral fan of the game. Mostly just watch NBA. That was the worst reffing I’ve seen in a title game … ever. And to end it like that? Just wow. One issue is that the refs allowed way too much fouling by the Liberty without any whistle. It was football on one end but then Ricky tack on the other. Impossible to win a game like that but the Lynx still almost did it because Sabrina and Stewart were in the midst of a massive choke. They just got bailed out.
im not a lynx fan but i dont get the whole illegal position foul call near the end of regulation. Also when jones got the foul she stepped on the defenders foot and fell and was not a foul. She just made a face as if it was. I also thought that was a clear path foul in ot. The wnba has a serious ref issue and its unfortunate how many bad calls there was.
What that foul means is that Smith had not established a defensive position as Stewart drove to the basket. She was still moving as Stewart was driving. Look at the video and you will see her still moving as well boding her up. The foul was correct.🤔🤔🤔

This was frustrating to watch. After 3 consecutive foul calls in the 2nd, it became obvious. The WNBA should apologize to the Lynx for that farce of a game that saw the best team cheated. Stewie traveling but getting a foul call to tie the game pretty much sealed the deal.
I didn't care which team won. I had no bias. In the first quarter and most of the second the Lynx defense game was stellar. Incredible. It was obvious starting in the 2nd quarter that the refs started rigging the game for the Liberty and calling stupid fouls on the Lynx to shut their defense and momentum down. I was yelling at the TV for the rest of the game - it was that obvious. I've never seen such blatantly dishonest officiating before. Jonquel Jones was allowed to barrel into Lynx players with impunity. She should have been called for offensive fouls. If a Lynx player breathed on her she got sent to the free throw line. Infuriating! Her getting the MVP award adds insult to injury. That honor belonged to Collier. Collier fouling outof the game was insulting and offensive. The BEST defensive player in the league gets fouled out by dishonest refs while they allow Jonquel Jones a free pass for offensive fouls and multiple trips to the free throw line. Outrageous. Stewart took 6 - SIX - steps before dribbling the ball in the infamous 4th quarter BS foul against the Lynx player. Ashley? had her feet planted. Stewart barreled into her and pushed her backwards. The slow motion replay makes that abundantly clear. Regardless, upon review the officials would have clearly seen Stewart travel before the alleged foul. SIX steps she took! Yet they ignored it because they knew the Lynx would get the ball and run out the remaining 5 seconds to win. This blatant dishonesty by officials hurts the league, too. If the WNBA is to be taken seriously they need competent and ethical referees. The Commissioner showing up to the game in a dress depicting the New York skyline only fuels the perception that this game was rigged for New York from the start - likely from the very top. New York winning it's first championship - in New York with all their celebrity fans in attendance - makes for better headlines than the Lynx winning their 5th championship.
As a coach it’s BS to blame anyone but us you can’t control what ref. But you can control the miss shots the lack of rebounding, the turnovers . Stop crying and play better. Don’t let the coaches and players off the hook. Do better!

We kept watching that "foul" over and over. No contact. While the game by and large was filled with great physicality, that call near the end was the most crucial. It essentially handed the game to the Liberty in the waning moments. I can understand the team being terribly upset.
Finally the coaches are being public about how the refs in the WNBA are not fair. Them choosing to make a call or not make a call is affecting the fairness of the game and is not protecting the players. It affects the psyche of the players and the audience watching this because you are more wrapped up in the injustice of it, not the quality of play. These players, both Liberty and the Lynx, are amazing. They and us as the audience deserved fair and consistent officiating, as well as the rest of the league. And worse, inconsistent officiating affects the outcome of the game and that should NOT be the case. It’s not just about this game, but ALL games. The playoffs made it clear we have a real problem. And it’s turning off the fans
Lynx had the liberty locked down, out of nowhere they start calling foul after foul in the second quarter when the game was getting out of hand. Then the ending was terrible.
WNBA Finals were stolen by NY Liberty because they out hustled Lynx in Overtime. Lynx were gifted Game 4 by refs called a 💩 foul with 2 seconds left in a TIED GAME & y'all won by 2 free throws.
I was rooting for the liberty at first, but after the refs clearly helping them win and the commissioner wearing a New York City outfit, I just can’t do it.
Not a Lynx fan Aces are my team ! Liberty in my top 3 but I definitely agree with this ! It’s call sports entertainment for a reason they wanted NY to win for monetary value for the league so they helped it along. I’m just glad Collier getting her shine she beastly with it!!!
they were the best team all year,That team made the finals back-to-back years I didn't hear no one crying fouls when they lost year. They scored more points in. O.T. Period.. the 2nd seed lost to 1st seed.
I believe the Ref explained the foul, but no one is talking about that explaining, they are just saying "it's not a foul". Don't cry about bad refereeing...unless you cry about all the bad calls.
I was pulling for the liberty tonight but there’s no way that was a foul. To have inconsistent officiating at such a critical point in the game is unfortunate. As happy as I am for the liberty, I hope the league takes a look at this. Congrats to the Lynx on a fabulous season and being worthy competitors. You’ll be back.
Cheryl Reeve could get fined and suspended for a game the start of next season. I remember The NBA back in The 1990s. Remember when Dennis Rodman was suspended for a game for profanity in a Post game interview.
This whole series was officiated so poorly; game 4 was clearly in favor of the Lynx, game 5 was in favor of the Liberty. Don’t just talk about one side.

They had five turnovers in overtime alone and gave up a 12 point lead (I know basketball is a game of runs, but that was ~20% of the score). That foul was 100% bogus, but it shouldn’t have gotten to that point.
Lynx missed a lot of shots down the stretch, missed big threes when they needed them most, didnt secure important rebounds down the stretch or in overtime and game 4 was tilted towards their side with the calls….so miss me with that shit. This point the finger attitude is rampant nowadays i swear
The officiating was bad all series long, and equally benefited both teams. I genuinely dont think there was a clear advantage for either team. Also, there was i dont know 3 or 4 times the ball clearly went off of lynx and it was called off liberty. They did not officiate away a 15 point lead from you, im sorry that just dont sound realistic.
Hard agree. Reeves complained after game 3, Brondello after game 4. The entire series had awful officiating, this particular game was just the reverse of game 4. I do feel for the Lynx, however the refs didn’t make five turnovers in OT.
2024, 2016...All I'm hearing is that every time the Lynx lose a championship, it's the refs fault. 😒 There were bad/missed calls on both ends of the court. Missed fouls, travels, holds ect that benefited each side, as there is in every WNBA/NBA game. Own it and move on. 🤷🏽

It wasn’t a good call, and obviously timing matters, but the game 4 foul count want 14-9 in Minn’s favor. Game 5 was 21-17 in NY’s favor. All the other games were essentially dead even. Overall, just bc the refs were poor, doesn’t mean one team got cheated. I think the reason Reeve made that (somewhat uncouth) dig about salary cap and super team is bc deep down she knows, more often than not, talent beats teamwork. And NYL had one more star than the Lynx. Congrats to JJ.

Ya, but she rushed it. She had 5.2 seconds left when she caught it, but acted like she had 0.2. Situational awareness will kill you every time. That was brutal.
When that referee was reviewing the video of the alleged foul I literally was 100% convinced he was overturning the decision…my jaw hit the floor when he upheld the foul 😮
Fever fan here, I agree with Coach. Just the disparity in the number of fouls is proof. Fans aren't stupid, we know stuff. That's what we do we watch hoops and know stuff, hoop stuff. Poor officiating will run fans off. More so when they double down on a bad call. They need to fix the over aggressive, causing injury play before a player gets permanent damage.
This is the worst bad sportsmanship I've ever seen. We all learned in middle school one play does not decide a game. She's going back like ten years to one play!! And then throws in the "28 years" jab too. This is sad.

If Stewie and Sabrina didn't come out playing like trash in a damn FINALS ELIMINATION GAME (esp. Sabrina) then we wouldn't be having this discussion because they would've won by 20. I was rooting for Liberty all post season, but at that moment I didn't care if Minnesota snatched it away from them. They deserved it, even though their offense wasn't great either. The only Liberty players I'm really happy for is Jonquel and Fiebich.
This is up there with The Rams not getting the pass interference call with the Saints. But it still went overtime, so you can't point at the controversial call as the reason.
And the Liberty coach didn't cry about all the terrible calls against the Lynx in this series either. There were more bad calls on the Lynx than the Liberty.
Bad or unfair calls are just part of the game. Even with the challenge system or instant replay. Both teams deserved to win. And at the end of the day , the game went to overtime. Both teams had a equal chance to win.
Sabrina was 1 for 19 in Game 5 of the Finals. She was an Olympian and 2nd team All-WNBA. What an embarrassment for the league. I do not ever want to hear again how Sabrina is better than Caitlin Clark.
Ref decided this one just as refs decided game 4. If you live by refs call and not blowing a lead you are bound to lose just as many as you win if you leave it up to these refs.
I am not a fan of Reeves BUT I saw officiating this year that was generally inconsistent and often so so apparently biased it put the integrity of the league in question.

This means being on the receiving end of the favoritism once, like on the Olympic team, and then on the other end of the favoritism, like in the playoffs. It should be about sport, fair competition, the administration and coaches should enforce it. But I only respect people who have that as a principle, not as an argument when it suits them.

I don't usually have such intense feelings about athletes and I think that sportswomanship is even more important than winning, but I really hate JJ and the refs. I can't believe the s**t she gets away with, including hurting other players. Lynx I know you're disappointed you didn't win, but you played a brilliant finals even though the crappy calls definitely favored NY, except for in game 4. I hope with time you all feel extremely proud of how well you did and the fact that you went so much farther this season than people expected, including 2 overtime games in this final, with many people commenting that this was the best WNBA finals ever. I wish that everyone could come back next season so you'd all get another shot together. It's the first season I started following you and I love the camaraderie and how you all seem to like each other, care about each other and have so much fun. Congratulations Cheryl, coaching staff, & all players, esp MVPhee. I already want next season to start.
