When Cheryl Strayed became an international success, she was broke and terrified about her future as a writer. In this clip, she explains what we get wrong about fame, money, and the writing life - and what success really looks like. She says, “We have really bad ideas about money as a culture. We flaunt wealth, but we don’t speak realistically about what money is … It’s like this big secret that we keep from each other.”
Cheryl Strayed is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller “Wild,” “Tiny Beautiful Things,” “Brave Enough,” and “Torch.” Her books have been translated into 40 languages. “Wild” was the first selection for Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 and made into an Oscar nominated film. Cheryl’s essays have been published in “The Best American Essays,” the New York Times, The Washington Post Magazine, Vogue, Salon, The Sun, Tin House, and elsewhere. She’s the co-host of the Dear Sugar radio podcast and lives in Portland, Oregon.

My favorite part is when it's mentioned that we don't *have* to create something utterly amazing, we just have to give our best. I'm a writer myself, but it's still hard to label myself as such because I believe that I need to be amazing at writing in order to be a "real" writer. I know it's going to take time, but I'm going to try and not feel that shame.

Eiko that statement resonated with me as well. I wrote my debut novella Extreme Blind Date in less than a year but it took an additional two years to build up the courage to publish it on Amazon Kindle. Fear and shame that the book wasn't "perfect" held me back for far to long and then I decided to just do it and the response has been wonderful! Just go for it!

This by far has been one of the BEST interviews. Cheryl is so transparent and almost put me tears in her truths. Im glad to know I do not have to be like other writers and write everyday that I can make my own time to write! Thanks so much for your words of wisdom.

I don't even have words to express how I feel after this episode, which is definitely the best I've ever watched. This conversation was so moving, powerful and inspiring that I feel like a different, better and empowered person after watching this. Thank you

My takeaway was how intentional Cheryl was about having a job that didn’t fulfill her so she could be fulfilled by her writing. I’ve struggled for a long time to find a job that fulfills me. Now I will look for jobs to pay the bills and fulfill myself with my writing. Thank you, Marie and Cheryl!

I adored this! There are so many takeaways. When she said you can still call yourself a writer even though you don't write everyday was my A HA! moment. I am struggling to write everyday. I had given up thinking that maybe I can't do it. Maybe I'll never be able to do it or maybe I am wrong and I am not a writer. I WILL be getting back on it. Thank you!

Cheryl's insight about how she now has people waiting for her next book was so aligned with where I'm at right now. I have a RU-vid channel where I share my experience with grief, heartbreak, healing, and originally did it because it was something in me that I felt called to get out. Now that I've gained a small audience, there's a different pressure there, and a filtering on the things I share about. It's tested my own vulnerability, and my trust in myself to share what I ultimately am desiring to share, rather than how I feel others will take it or approve of it (or not). The desire to gain love and approval from others is such a limitation to creativity and self expression. The ultimate target for me is to live as myself, and trust that. I really appreciate this video at this time in my life. Much love! 💚✨

Two main insights for me: 1) idea of happiness => who I am from the outside is close to who I am on the inside; 2) double truth about life: life will always be hard AND life will always be beautiful so put yourself in the way of beauty! Merci, amazing interview!

Where have I been the last 6 years? I had never heard of any of Cheryl's writing until now, and I immediately downloaded Tiny Beautiful Things. This is important work, and sometimes I'm scared that we've gone too far in the wrong direction of a world where everything seems ok on the surface and actually is not at all ok. I loved the quote you read, "Nobody is going to live your life for you". I have struggled with this thought process, and sometimes for somebody else to say it is all that is takes to have it make sense. What a powerful interview, thank you for sharing.

I love the idea of being our own engine. For some reason I'm reminded of the first time at a doctor's appointment when I was pregnant with my oldest, they put the little loudspeaker thingy on my stomach and amplified it and this "chugga-chugga-chugga" could be heard and that was her heartbeat. Lots of reasons this was moving, but one was having the idea of her reality and life being made real to me. I love this empowering conversation that encourages me to get quiet and listen closely for the heartbeat of my own creative spirit, chugging faithfully away despite life's many challenges.

You BOTH are national treasures! I had the opportunity to watch as I sit here, catching up on work emails after a week's family vacation. Multi-tasking goodness. It struck me how very grounded and accomplished you are - just REAL women who are making things happen for themselves and the people around them. So inspiring. The major takeaway, for me, was the "Binge Writing" piece. As a writer (with my first book publishing contract that I am working slowly on, in between running my business, raising two kids and trying to achieve some balance in life), I have been making excuses for not having "cracked the code" for myself on the characters, the plot line, etc. When people ask me how the book is coming, I just say, "Oh, I am working on it, but haven't gotten too far. I'm in research mode right now." That seems to satisfy them, but the voice in my own head has been shaming me to push a little harder. Frankly, I have been enjoying the process of researching deeper and deeper for inspiration (excavating - loved that!) and Cheryl, you gave me permission to work in spurts, as it fits into my life. There is no rush. No deadline (and, of course, no advance!). What there IS is an idea that I am deliciously unfolding until it becomes my first fiction novel. THANK YOU for permission to let it breathe, and breath into it myself. That was an awesome gift today. :)

I relate to Cheryl in so many ways... Growing up working class, watching women I love endure domestic violence, the death of a beloved parent, self-destructing---then putting the pieces back together and finding freedom. Woah!!! What. An. Adventure. Cheryl inspires me to follow my heart, take my time, and share my story with the world about my personal transformation. I feel that our personal stories are what connect us all beneath the surface. That is love! MUAH, MUAH!

I put off watching this for so long! I didn't mean to. I waitress, and I have been working a ton of 12 hour shifts lately and inbetween times I have been feeling so spent. I wanted to be 100% awake for this one. I'm actually glad that I waited. Thank you so much for this conversation. I loved listening to it. There is so much to take away from this! I'm 24, and as I mentioned, a waitress (I have a degree and I did try to get a 'degree job' for a while, but I got rejected for basically everything), so right now I am especially interested in the people I admire's lives pre-success. I get really frustrated by successful artists saying things like 'whatever you're doing in life, LOVE it' because when you're half way through a 12 hour shift in a busy restaurant on one of those days where all your tables seem to hate you, that is obviously impossible. Listening to you guys talk about the making money and doing the passion thing separately made me feel better. Though I write fairly often (the binge writing thing is helping me let go of so much self imposed guilt right now), I'm not really sending anything off yet, and on the rare occasions I do I don't hear anything, so I feel like I'm this huge failure most of the time. Hearing people who have that shit together talking about back when they didn't is always a massive relief. It helps me keep with the hope. Also, I love how Cheryl embraced art despite her poor background. I grew up pretty poor too. My mum raised my brother and me by herself and we lived off of welfare for much of my childhood. Part of me feels this weird guilt that I'm not more motivated to have this high powered career where I'm raking in all the money. You hear of that a lot, right? People who are motivated by making sure that their life isn't a poor one. I feel guilty a lot that I'm not like that, and also like kind of failure and like poor-ness is just in my genes or something. I worry that in a few year's time I feel this massive regret that I wasn't more concerned with earning more money when I was younger. Hearing about Cheryl and her husband's simultaneous financial struggles and dedication to their artistic goals makes me feel better. I just adore the honesty both of you bring to your work. Truthfully, I'm really struggling right now. I feel totally paralysed in my life. I don't know how to move forward, and the more I stay where I am, the bigger of a deal moving forward starts to feel, and the shame of some potential epic failure starts to feel like more than I could ever possibly deal with. I doubt myself like... chronically. It's something I've only recently admitted to myself. My mum was in an emotionally abusive relationship for my whole childhood basically. This guy finally left out lives when I was 16, and I had really thought that the whole thing being over meant that it was done with, but the further I get into my adult life... the more I realise that isn't the case. At all. And I really don't know how to deal with that fact. It seems like being able to identify struggles that I have, like my 0% confidence (and the fact that I've never been in a relationship - god, so embarrassing but I just don't know how to get comfortable around men) relate back to the things that were happening in my house when I was a kid should make them better, but so far they don't at all. I'm just consumed by all these past events right now in a way I can see is massively unhealthy, but I can't seem to stop raking over all the same. I think it doesn't help that it's all that I want to talk about, but I can't. It's like I can't even form the words. It's not like there's even really a specific event I can hold up as proof of Why I'm All Fucked Up because so much of it was just Normal for so long. How do you summarise 12 years of your life in a way people will understand? Can you? I don't even know. I am trying to write about it - but one of my 'not a real writer' moments is that I don't even know how to do that. All of this is to say, in the INCREDIBLY unlikely chance that either of you actually read this - thank you, Cheryl and Marie. My brain has turned into kind of war zone of late and I find your words to be so comforting. Thank you, thank you, thank you xxx

I'm also learning to say no and just realizing how excruciatingly hard it is for me. My hubby pointed it out to me and it's been such a process. I'm probably losing some friends in the process but I had to take a step back and stop saying yes to everyone in the spirit of "being there" for them, and say yes to myself and what I really want. What Cheryl said about making work and disconnecting from the result is something I really needed to hear. That kind of pressure is really counter productive, and I'm so happy that she spoke about her struggles so honestly and also gives such good advice on deeply testing issues and experiences that we all encounter in life. I have always felt that if you are true to yourself, and stand up for what you feel is right, even in the midst of the most excruciating circumstances, you reach a place inside you that is truly magical. And that place is a wellspring of all the beautiful things that you have to offer to the world. This talk serves as a reminder of that. I cried a lot of times during the talk, witnessing Cheryl speak the things that she did with such courage and grace. It’s like I was witnessing something so unabashed in its beauty that crying only seemed just to bear witness to it. Crying seemed okay. And never have I felt more powerful and vulnerable at the same time. I am 27 and my life till now has been a series of regrets-about the things that I lost and the life not lived. I have lived most of my life from a place of shame. Watching this video gives me hope, a hope that eventually becomes a part of me, as I stand with my eyes open, looking directly into the bright sun that is Cheryl. Thank you, all I have is gratitude.

This is the most inspirational interview about writing and life that I've seen in a very long time. I'm so grateful that Cheryl talks about things like not writing every day, because I've encountered the mentality that you must write every day or you aren't really a writer so many times from other authors and it kills my spirit. I am absolutely inspired and grateful. For fifteen years I have built an interior design firm and write a blog about living authentically at home. My passion for creating home is born out of a wound of having a transient childhood and the blog addresses how important home is to our joy and emotional and spiritual well being. I love writing about it but my passion the past few years is to teach young women how to practice spiritual entrepreneurship and self care. I have found a channel to do that through my alter ego I call the Divine Hustler. Anyone who hustles life by harnessing the magic of connection to Source is a Divine Hustler and it's all I want to do now! Thank you so much to both of you for doing this, I am really touched by Cheryl's wisdom and humility. One of the insights that I took away, which I need to keep on revisiting and being exposed to, is to write (for me, I write music) from that deep core of integrity, love and urge to create something beautiful just for the sake of creating something beautiful, regardless of whether it will be praised or not. I know that when I operate from there, the beauty of my work is even stronger, and it feels more fulfilling and worthwhile! But the temptation and background noise of wanting to impress or receive validation (sometimes desperately) is a sad, difficult, yet totally forgivable hindrance to tapping in to the deeper layers of life, art and love. Peace be with all of you!

I was so inspired by both of you, wrote a bunch of notes on all that inspired me, toooo long, ha! So, I'll just say that I appreciate the honesty, wisdom, the truth about what it's like to be successful and famous, not all peaches and cream. That you aren't instantly rich and "at the top of the mountain". There were so many things I loved about this interview, that there's too much to say. But I love the humility! I am new to Marie TV, I don't think I'll ever catch up! But I'm amazed at the people you've interviewed, Marie. I've watched a few Kris Carr videos and that is how I found "Marie TV". I saw the movie "Wild", the first I had heard of Cheryl Strayed, I think her mother was a beautiful soul! The favorite quote, "Putting yourself in the way of beauty", awesome thought....And my mother too, gave me a gift by saying "I just want my kids to be happy", and after she died and I realized that was a gift, I really appreciated her saying that, because it was my goal, and as I've achieved so much happiness in my life, I thank her every day. I love the word descriptions like "excavating", and "literary lasagna". I love the definition for ART! As an artist it is so important, just how you put that. Thank you both for sharing your amazing humanity and all that women are and can be! Blessings✨😌PEACE

Love the idea of tech-free gathering places, Marie. Perhaps not to disconnect, but to REconnect. Reconnect to real human bodies and the electricity generated between them. Like the sparks flying in today's episode!! Loved it!

I am in awe of both of you! Such beautiful, well-spoken, intelligent conversationalists. Thank you for inspiring me to perhaps start writing. I have never thought of myself as a writer, but people are always telling me "You should write a book!" when telling them various stories about my life. I have those thoughts of "who would want to read that?" or "who do I think I am to even consider it!". Well who do I think I am to NOT? Do I have to write a masterpiece or can I just start writing? I think I needed to hear - to be given permission - to just write. Not necessarily every day or for an audience. Just write. Thank you, Cheryl.

I just stumbled on this channel and episode by accident. I want to explore my storytelling passion but I have had such a difficult time deciding how to do it and how to find time. As I followed the conversation, I got so inspired that the ideas just flowed out! Thank you for taking the time to do this and share your advice and insight ❤️ I love moments when you are truly inspired. Thank you so much!

Dear Marie, I have to say that as you guaranteed in your email this interview has blown me away! I haven't been craving to be a writer so I didn't plan to turn in for this long video but somehow it kept bothering me. Big thank to you and Cheryl for sharing the wisdom and the reality behind the success, you are both amazing!

Within the first 10 minutes of this interview, I was brought to tears. Everything that I thought i could never be, everything that I imagined could only be possible in another life, was brought to life in front of me. Thank you.

Thank you for mentioning 'binge writing.' I knew I couldn't be the only one who worked like this despite the fact that it runs contrary to most advice. This is going to set some people free.

This is an amazing video. Thank you so much. I'm a journalist, and even though I write everyday for a living, sometimes I still feel like I'm not a "true" writer. I haven't released any books, my name isn't credited in any movies or games, and even though nobody is telling me that I have to, I feel like what I do is not significant, or not an art, before I can achieve those things. You remind me that I shouldn't be too harsh on, or ashamed of myself. Thank you.

I had to pause the video and just finished it today. LOVED IT SO MUCH! Gosh, I took away so much from this treasure of a video! I've written novels in my mind while I drive to pick up the kids or when I squeeze in a walk. It's a goal of mine to share my story. I think what I took away from this video (and as I gain wisdom with age) is that happiness is always interwoven with hardship. It made me think back on all of my "happiest" moments in life and realized it all came with hard work, some suffering, and pain. Thank you for this video!!

Im pretty sure I found my calling. I just need to let out all this energy and excitement. even if no one reads this I dont care. I woke up last night trying to put my daughter back to sleep because she awake at 2:30 in the morning. It took me an hour to put her to sleep. and as i put her down i layed down in bed and started to think. and everything came piecing together just so fast. I was getting excited and just so ready to start writing everything that came to me. and I did I just started writing today. I am soooo excited. I really want to get this published after i am done. This is going to be an amazing book. I litteraly wrote 11 long paragraphs just today. i am so excited!!!! wahoo!!

Love this, thanks ladies. I read a description of a piece of art the other day, and one word stood out -- unambitious. I'd never really contemplated the peaceful beauty of unambition. Around 23:00, Cheryl recounts letting go of ambition in order to create, that really resonated.

Wow - this was so inspiring! Anytime I see Cheryl giving a talk or being interviewed, I find inspiration in it, but as someone who aspires to be a writer & has been from a very young age, her points on surrender & one day at a time, I can really take to heart

Thank you, ladies. Before this I never knew who Cheryl was, didn't even watch or read Wild, but I surely will now. I am a writer myself so everything discussed resonates with me, but if I have to single out a takeaway, then it would be to focus on my craft rather than on monetization at this point in my time. However I must add that also answering those two core questions as a writer were also a big takeway for me, especially that about what question am I trying to answer for others with my work. Before I was more about providing solutions, but I like the simplicity of just giving an answer and not always a solution. Hugs, Natalija

awesome !!! I will watch this interview again and again. So much I can identify with. Learning to identify not compare nor judge has helped me to let myself out of the gate to self-shaming, self-blaming from other's work as in like Cheryl Strayed talk to her journey.

I'm a binge writer so I to want to thank you for this! I can tell that voice to go stuff it finally. I was stuck because I can go for a couple months between writing while life gets crazy so it's nice to know that as long as I keep coming back to it and keep creating, it is valid.
