PTSD is a strange thing. My granddad was a very quiet man to the point of strangeness. He died when I was about 7 and my only memories of him are of his gnarly worn hands, smoking like a chimney and constantly doing things around the house - I don't remember him ever saying anything. Even my grandmother (who I knew better) joked about him being "the silent type". He was briefly hospitalised "for his nerves" when my mum was a child. Later we found out he was in some very close fighting in the battle of Kohima - neither my mother nor grandmother had a clue. I have a commemorative card from his funeral in which somebody had written "known by his deeds not his words". And I'm quite happy to have that small thing even if I never really knew him.

My great grandfather was mustered gassed during WWI. He was told never to drink alcohol. Grandma, said her dad was a sweet man until he would start drinking. It was something about the combination of alcohol and mustard gas that caused such a change in mood.

As a human being no one can really know for certain ALL the Traumas, circumstances and Trials our ancestors went through...God Bless this Strong 💪🏽 Woman who chose to research “Publicly for All Others to Observe”. We really can’t fully comprehend the PAST as TIMES are significantly different in ALL Present areas of LIFE. 🤔🔍🙏🏽🔑🧐⏳

My great grandfather was in the Durham Light Infantry 1/6 Battalion he was also a miner...his name is at the memorial in Ypres, Missing assumed Dead 26/4/1915. He was only 22 years old, had to babies (one was my grandad, I never met him as he also died young) I have have been attempting to research him...I wish I could meet up with that lady so she could help me...x ❤️ I want the lockdown to end so I can go up to Durham records office. I have never been to Durham...I’m really excited to find out about my Northern Eastern England ancestors. X

So sad. Doesn't excuse his bad behavior, but what those men went through was atrocious and only the most extreme shell shocked (PTSD) soldiers got any treatment.

Obviously it’s a badge. 🙄 She meant what does it symbolise or stand for. Don’t know where this thing about Cheryl being a bit thick comes from, no she’s not MENSA or NASA smart, but she’s quite sharp and analytical for a woman frequently dismissed as a bimbo. Again, snobbery towards northerners and the working class. 🙄 Oldest one in the book.

He could have very well started out life with a different sort of personality...and whatever experiences he had during WWI may have changed something in him. It doesn't excuse his violent temper etc, but it does at least give some idea as to who the whole person was.

Wow. A hard drinking, violent man with a sex drive that already netted him 9 living children, and a young housekeeper hired to watch the kids. This doesn't sound like a happy story, it sounds like a rapey story, and the fact that she never spoke of him later doesn't help.

My great-grandfather was exactly in the same situation as him, widow with lots of kids, hired a housekeeper, made her pregnant and in the end had 8 more children with her. In total he had 22 children with 3 women. That was not uncommon in those times.
