@@sleepyjay2664 Both ends of the bridge are in VA. The Chesapeake Peninsula's lower end is part of VA, the nothern end is MD.

Most US infrastructure from the era the collapsed bridged was built in is cheap and nasty and not very safe. Cost was the only consideration, not safety. That is because of the cold war. The US was more interested in spending money building ICBM silos, not safe infrastructure.

Many were empty, and had they been removed, the ship would have been higher in the water, and might not have fit under this bridge. The containers are on their way from the US, not to the US.

Granted it would appear they stopped traffic way early for no reason, but if the ship left on its own power (notice the tugs escorting it) and it did have an issue ( it has a history prior to hitting the FSK Bridge) the Governor would have been harpooned.
