AGREED!! Those who are unfamiliar with the breed often think a Chessie owner is over-bragging when stating examples of their near-human intelligence. With few exceptions, they really ARE that intelligent.

I had two Chesapeakes. One thing you didn’t comment on is what they were bred to do, retrieve. Once they know what they have to retrieve, they will go over, under, or through any barrier between them and their mark. They will not hesitate to dive in any water, no matter what the temp. Unfortunately, if one does not spend at least 45 minutes a day retrieving or doing high energy exercises with them, they can become troublesome. They were also bred to protect the water men’s’ boats. That means your home, so they can be dangerous to strangers. You said they are intelligent; that’s true, but sometimes they try to think for themselves and the results are usually disastrous. After all, they are dogs. They are very loyal to the family, but need a firm hand. Ideally they should belong to duck hunters.

Couldn't have said it any better. I'm not a duck hunter, but I do take mine out and let my friends who hunt take him. Probably the first or 2nd time I took mine into a marshy field he flushed a phesant, now I take him out as often as I can so he can sniff and point out birds, it's in his DNA. Great dogs, but they do act out if they don't get enough hard exercise.

I'm on my second Chessie. Our first was a great dog who loved everyone and loved to hunt. We miss her greatly. Our second is male and he is a handful. Fortunately we live in the country where he can roam, run and swim to his hearts content. Many look at Chessies as another "Lab" but they are not! Labs want to please you and be told what to do. Chessies want to be your friend and be treated with respect. It is a bond that only Chessie owners know and understand. If you live in an apartment, don't have the time during the day to exercise a Chessie, and don't hunt then I would not recommend getting one. It's not fair to you or the dog. If you have never seen a Chessie break ice in January while retrieving a duck with his tail wagging the whole time you have never experienced the true passion of this breed. They were bred to do one thing, and to do it well, and that is to retrieve waterfowl.

Friendliness with strangers at 4/10 seem on point. Ours is big on his personal space with strangers. the 8/10 in cold seems right, 8/10 for heat does not describe out chessey

The friendliness with strangers part can vary because it depends on if your dog has been socialized as a puppy or not

"Intelligence" rating should be 10, not 9. These dogs generally have near-human cognitive skills.

We adopted a “Chesador” from a rescue. He is the greatest canine companion I’ve ever owned. BUT he is not friendly with people in our house and his reaction to other dogs is unpredictable. He is very playful and loves our German Shepherd. They play for hours on end in the house.

Corvette Ronnie Because they aren't. Once they bond with you they view you as theirs and will do everything in their DNA to protect and care for you. Even when it's oddly inconvenient. It's chessie love

Having owned a chessie , i dont agree with this rating system. TRAINING MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE ! Highly doubt whoever posted this video ever had a chessie. They are amazing dogs, smarter than most of their owners. They are just all around great dogs and if trained well you will never want another breed
