Chess Openings- Falkbeer Countergambit

In the Falkbeer Countergambit, black immediately challenges the center against the king's gambit from white. The aggression is taken away from white and given to black. White must be very careful not to play anything incorrectly or black can take over the game very quickly. This is a great defense for anyone that sees the kings gambit often and wants to throw their opponent a loop.

That is pretty important to know you're own opening from two perspectives.

like most gambits in general the downside is that you are giving up material early on (if they play correctly). You are obviously going to try and find compensation for the material disadvantage but being down in material from the beginning is definitely not an advantage.

Hey dude, I love your vids. I believe this IS the first vid on the FCG on youtube. I know how how it feels when someone plays the FCG against you. I bang my fist on the desk when someone plays it against me because I have been butchered real bad with the FCG playing as white.

There is someone in our tournament area that plays this opening. The first time we played each other he did the King's Gambit (I had never seen it before) so I just threw out my d pawn. We have played 4 times since then (I have won every time with the Falkbeer) every game has been exciting and dangerous!!! Thanks for the awesome video!

@Moggietje there are 2 main variations here..in the first black can play qg4 and when white plays pxg3 then black can play qxg3 checking the king..yes white may be up in material but if black activates his lightsquare bishop then white will be in trouble..2nd variation is qh3 and if white does pxg3 then black can play qxh8.
@CloudyMcCloud00

One variation not covered here, after 1.e4 e5 2.f4 d5 3.exd5 is 3...exf4 (best move, apparently), after which (e.g.): 4.Nf3 Nf6 5.c4 c6 6.d4 cxd5 7.Bxf4.

I have messaged him but have not heard back from him. You should send him a note yourself requesting the matchup. I think it could be a really good idea getting insight from both of us as we play.

Question: 4:55 mark. Instead of trying to save white’s pawn on d5, what if white continued to develop with d2-d4? Establishing center control again while opening the lane for the bishop to attack the f4 pawn. If black takes the white pawn on d5 either with the queen or more likely the knight, white moves c2-c4 establishing center control again queen side, chasing off black’s queen or again more likely knight. Black looses tempo and white is a move away from taking the pawn back with c1-c4.

u should do the little deviations faster, and go in main lines explaining the strategy options for both sides in the middle game, also recommending some games in the description, we can find in internet. I think you can do that in 15 min instead telling us the obvious tactics things

I would consider myself a fairly strong King's Gambit player. Falkbeer definitely gives me the most trouble. 2:37 mark in the video. I pretty much have a rule when e5 takes f4, as a king's gambit player you have to bring Kn F3. Of course black could then take e4 pawn only to recapture with Kn to e4 and I play from there. It's not the game I intended but I'll take my changes from there with both Knights in play. 7:11 min mark. Taking the pawn on D5 never ends well for me so I would avoid that.

if white captures the black bishop, black can just take the white queen with his queen, checking the king and up a lot of material. This will be a super easy win for black.

Hi. At 8:02 or so, i played with the white pieces a3 first and it worked out pretty well. Or was my opponent just not seeing his chance? (1....Bc5 2. d3 Bxg1 3. Rxg1 Kxd5 4. dxe4 Kxc3 4. Qxd8 Kingxd8 5. bxC3.....) I think he didn´t played well with his bishop... What other options did black had? Like your videos a lot bytheway, learned very much. With the help of your kingsgambit-tutorial i managed winning against one of the local heros at the openair chess in the park - twice! So thanks. ;)

Thanks for this video! Still, I'm a bit frustrated here... I'm a king's gambit player with white (never with black for I never go for 1. ... e5 after 1. e4.). Many players do use the Falkbeer countergambit, and it quickly brings in sharp position. Your video is instructive considering the mistakes that shouldn't be done, but I've avoided them for a while now. I would be greatly interested to have more insights on the various lines AFTER Ne4. Do you have any material to suggest (expect for chessbase ;) ) ? Cheers!

9:35 i got to this position (well similar, not exact) in a diffrent game. and i thought out this, (and i used it because it was early and my opponent wasnt thinking at all and was greedy for material) Bf8->b-4, and if he wouldnt move his pawn up to attack it, then i capture with knight, he really could only take it with his pawn or he loses a queen, and i capture back with the bishop, and i forked the rook and the king. just had an experience i wanted to share :p

That's not possible to get chased bc if your pawn and queen are in that position at 3:26 if he puts his knight there you just move your pawn up and he'll be in check. When he eats your queen you eat his rook and turn it into a queen. Hope that helps
